The Witcher is a computer Role-Playing Game in which you play Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter questing to regain his memories whilst pursuing revenge against a mysterious group known as the Salamandra. It was based on an upgraded version of the Neverwinter Nights Aurora engine, developed by CD Projekt RED and released in late 2007.The title is set in The 'Verse introduced by Andrzej Sapkowski's novel of the same name. It sold unexpectedly well both in the US and worldwide, given that it was a niche PC game based on a book mostly unknown outside of Central Europe. A sequel, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, was released on May 17, 2011. A third game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released on May 19, 2015.Interestingly, the first Witcher game has a rather extensive post-release history. A remake of the first game titled The Witcher: Rise Of The White Wolf was to be released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in 2009, featuring a brand new engine and more action-oriented combat system in the vein of the then-upcoming sequel. Unfortunately, it was cancelled in 2009 due to disagreements between CD Projekt Red and co-developer Widescreen Games. However, in 2012, a group of modders endorsed by CD Projekt Red began work on an ambitious mod for the Enhanced Edition, also titled "Rise Of The White Wolf," that introduced new story elements, a seriously overhauled interface, an improved combat system, and updated graphics. The mod was released in 2014 to great acclaim and is now seen by many as the definitive way to play the original. Then on October 26, 2022, CD Projekt RED announced a new attempt to remake the game. Entitled The Witcher Remake, is it to be co-developed by Fool's Theory and built on Unreal Engine 5.Note: The tropes listed on both this and the YMMV page are for the vanilla Enhanced Edition. The updates/changes made in the "Rise Of The White Wolf" overhaul are not included at the moment.

A few things make this more bearable than most examples; hunting monsters for cash is ostensibly Geralt's day job, the quests are more of "collect as you do real quests", the drop-rates are high, and there is a perfectly good in-game reason for why someone would want these specific bear asses (alchemy, mostly). This also serves the gameplay purpose of familiarizing the player with where alchemical ingredients can be found, and giving an opportunity to collect a surplus for their own use.

Oh, and if you stop the (unjust) lynching? He sics his cronies on you, despite the fact that you just killed the monster that was plaguing the village!

As a doctor, she sets up a field hospital in the middle of a battlefield between the Order and the Scoia'tael and is treating both sides indiscriminately. Scoia'tael members barge in her hospital and, after seeing that she is treating humans, try to kill them and her. After Geralt dispose of them, members of the Order enter the hospital. Shani tells them that they are late and that their help is no longer needed, only for them to start attacking her and her non-humans patients when they realize she is helping non-humans. Once again, Geralt deals with them, leaving behind a bloody mess in the middle of the hospital. At this point, a very shaken and distraught Shani says she needs a drink.

Early-Installment Weirdness: While still a pretty great game, the rookie mistakes of the by then newly funded CD Project are clearly visible in the game's storyline. Many characters are just Expies or Suspiciously Similar Substitutes for book characters (Azar Javed for Vilgefortz, Alvin for Ciri, Triss' characterization resembles Yennefer's etc) and the storyline revisits almost every part of the books, while at the same time, they almost never talk about anything that happened before. The sequels gradually form their own compelling storyline, create independent characters and resolve old plotlines from the books. A more minor example would be the quest journal and character glossary. In the first game, both are written from Geralt's point of view, and are appropriately factual and dry. The next two games changed it so that Dandelion wrote them based on what Geralt told him some time after the fact. As such, they tend to be laced with his biases and sense of humor. The combat system is a bizarre mixture of classic CRPG combat and a rhythm game, in contrast to the more straightforward action RPG combat of the two sequels.

Patched, however, it's a nightmare. Specifically, the computer has a built-in advantage by always playing last, which means that it always knows exactly what it needs to get to beat you (and can thus decide how many and which dice to reroll to best accomplish that). And with even a basic understanding of probability calculation, the number of times the AI beats you even when you have an advantage after the first throw (especially the higher difficulty opponents) seems not very believable.

Permanently Missable Content: Every chapter is set in a different place and most NPCs are specific to them. This makes many sidequests impossible to complete once you reach a Point of No Return. While you can get the game Infinity +1 Sword Steel Sword after killing all of the Trophy Monsters, you can also get it by completing the dentist's sidequest in Chapter 3. The problem is that you need to give him a Barghest Skull, which can only be obtained in Chapter 1 (and most probably sold all their skulls to Abigail in the same chapter, since they're useless otherwise). Don't have any Barghest Skulls? You'll need to choose between either the Infinity+1 Steel or Silver Sword (assuming you did do the Trophy Monster hunts). In Chapter I, if you complete Haren Brogg's quest by allowing the Scoia'tael to take the weapons, entering Raymond Maarloeve's home in Chapter II enables a flag which triggers a cutscene when you enter the Hairy Bear tavern for the next time. In this cutscene, the Scoia'tael use the aforementioned weapons to murder Coleman, which obviously makes any sidequest involving himnote "Hot Potato" (started in Chapter I) requires to bring him a package, and "The Rat" where he is the quest giver impossible to complete. Visiting Maarloeve is part of the main quest, and Geralt starts next to his door once the Temple District becomes accessible in Chapter II.

In the cutscenes, Geralt explicitly reflects on the fact that he should never take sides. Salamandra, however, is pretty much explicitly evil. If you side with the Order of the Flaming Rose, you'll find that several of them really do follow the ideals they profess. In this story branch, the conflict ends with a civil war between the good and corrupt factions. Conversely, side with the Scoia'tael, and you'll find that there really isn't much more to them than meets the eye. They're arguably less "dark" than the Order to begin with however, so it probably equals out in the end.

In a game that generally is very lenient on how you go about things, this is very jarring when it comes ahead.

Take a Third Option: A number of opportunities throughout the game: The biggest decision in the main plot allows this. In the course of the story, several dialogs stat that Geralt will have to choose a side in the incoming war. He can eventually ally with the Order or the rebels, but he also can actually remain neutral. The developers do seem to favor certain quest choices, though. One of the more obvious examples of this is the quest Ripples. There are three resolutions to this quest: siding with the vodyanoi, siding with the villagers, or the neutral path of siding with the Lady of the Lake. Siding with the vodyanoi rewards you with a sword that's not particularly great and can easily be found in abundance later. Siding with the villagers gives you something that can be sold for a pretty decent amount or given as a gift, but at that point you won't really need it. Siding with the Lady gives you a sword that is both unique and quite nice and a skill point. Given Geralt's True Neutral personality is canon, though, giving the neutral path the biggest reward might be justified.

This is because the game triggers Coleman's death the moment you step foot in the detective's house. There is also the party organized by Declan Leuvaarden in the beginning of the third chapter (which is a critical point in the plot: it is supposed to happen in 6 p.m. the first day, but will be infinitely delayed until Geralt goes there, even allowing to complete most of the chapter other quests before. Declan even seems to be throwing a new banquet every day during all of chapter 3, as Triss will spend all her evenings there and only return home at around 4 in the morning.

Other people quickly realized that it would also be very effective in warfare, and he committed suicide, burning his lab as well while mages kept the secret from spreading. Many more shout-outs that will be completely lost to people who don't know Poland well. Adam who, as Celina puts it, suffers for millions is a direct reference to Adam Mickiewicz, while the conflict between two sisters with raspberries in the background is a reference to the poem Balladyna by Juliusz Słowacki. Both poets are main representatives of Polish Romanticism. At the beginning of the Epilogue, Radovid and Foltest are discussing their course of action. Radovid says he'll provide "fraternal assistance" to Foltest's forces, which Foltest rapidly and quite angrily dismisses, saying that the term "fraternal assistance" somehow rubs him the wrong way. In real life this term was routinely used by the Soviets in regards to their Eastern Bloc subordinate states, while the nature of the "assistance" was suspiciously akin to "we send them our coal, and in return they take our sugar". No wonder most Poles were rubbed the wrong way by the term. A suspiciously-familiar theory about the Holy Grail being a woman is attributed to one Bronze Dan. Its delivery also makes it a Take That!. The Lumberjacks in the swamp will sometimes discuss their love of pressing flowers and going to taverns dressed as women. The boss of Chapter 4 is Dagon, a Physical God straight out of the Cthulhu Mythos. The Bestiary entry for which begins with That is not dead which can eternal lie; and with strange aeons, even death may die. One of the fighting styles learned during the Prologue is called "Temerian Devil". Appropriatly, this is the fighting style made to fight against groups of enemies, especially with circling sword blows and wirlwind attacks.

Assuming you allowed the Scoia'tael to take Haren Brogg's goods in Chapter 1, you may want to steer clear of Raymond Maarloeve in Chapter 2 till you've met Coleman at the Hairy Bear Inn and finished his quests. This is because the game triggers Coleman's death the moment you step foot in the detective's house. There is also the party organized by Declan Leuvaarden in the beginning of the third chapter (which is a critical point in the plot: it is supposed to happen in 6 p.m. the first day, but will be infinitely delayed until Geralt goes there, even allowing to complete most of the chapter other quests before. Declan even seems to be throwing a new banquet every day during all of chapter 3, as Triss will spend all her evenings there and only return home at around 4 in the morning.

The "Dogcatcher of Vizima" sidequest requires Geralt to kill six wandering dogs in order to harvest some fat in their body. The problem is that dogs aren't hostile at all (unless provoked), so the easiest way to complete the quest is to coldbloodly attack harmless creatures (which grant a ridiculously low amount of experience points). There actually are ways to complete the quest without Geralt killing them himself. The fat can be bought from some merchants, found in houses or rarely as loot from Salamandra assassins. As you have two chapters to complete the quest, it's fairly easy to get the 6 you need just by looking for them casually.

The developers do seem to favor certain quest choices, though. One of the more obvious examples of this is the quest Ripples. There are three resolutions to this quest: siding with the vodyanoi, siding with the villagers, or the neutral path of siding with the Lady of the Lake. Siding with the vodyanoi rewards you with a sword that's not particularly great and can easily be found in abundance later. Siding with the villagers gives you something that can be sold for a pretty decent amount or given as a gift, but at that point you won't really need it. Siding with the Lady gives you a sword that is both unique and quite nice and a skill point. Given Geralt's True Neutral personality is canon, though, giving the neutral path the biggest reward might be justified.
