Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Gory Toons is a series of animations featuring a wide-range of recognizable characters. General premise is…. Honestly, it’s rather difficult to place into exact words. If any whole description can be made, however, then the series is basically Happy Tree Friends but the woodland critters replaced with animated Toons. Essentially, it’s a show featuring a Toon Town with diverse residents who live in a bright, happy, Crapsack World bent on making them suffer as much as possible before the sweet release of death takes away the pain.Gory Toons can provide some of the strangest episodes ever released for a web-series. Some examples include gory homicide, catastrophic disaster, animal attacks, cannibalistic rampages, and pretty much any other bizarre concept that this series could ever make up.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })Originally, the shorts were titled Battle of the Multiverse. The initial quality of the series was very... let's just say, distinct. However, from late 2019 to early 2020, the animation had become more... well, animated. Notable refinements include blinking, fluid animation, the inclusion of sound effects, improved drawings, etc. Officially, the series recommends newcomers to watch later episodes via a playlist containing episodes beyond Season 6; click here. Otherwise, the entire Battle of the Multiverse full series is right here for more examination on the evolution. The series is now reworked into the series Gory Toons. Check it out right here.Keep in mind that this page covers both Gory Toons and Battle of the Multiverse. Therefore, it will more or less treat each series as one entire web-show.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_3'); })

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_1456c90 | comment |
Pictorial Speech Bubble: The storytelling in the show is usually limited to Speaking Simlish, brief catch phrases, and actions, but this is still used on rare occasions. In "Blind Mistake", for example, Clara and Toad communicate to Chef Pee Pee this way, which is implied to be verbally heard In-Universe considering how Chef Pee Pee has bandages on his eyes.

Character designs weren't exactly finalized yet. For example, SpongeBob's holes would constantly disappear or vary in amount, Squidward's face was normally drawn looking at a direction as opposed to using Cheated Angles, Elmer Fudd had a stiffly-illustrated design, Kirby was a lighter shade of pink, South Park characters were drawn using MS Paint, and most Tree Friends had inconsistent proportions from scene to scene.

Diabolus ex Machina | |
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_1e1aa82a | comment |
Diabolus ex Machina: Played for Laughs. Most episodes have characters die under improbable circumstances for no other reason than Rule of Funny. Kirby is shown as more than happy to assist his friend Pop with his crumbling house in "And It Just Fixs!". Heck, everybody seem to be making the best of the situation at the beginning. Unfortunately, inconvenient timing has it out for Kirby and a firework set up by Cuddles and SpongeBob bursts at the exact moment where Kirby is hammering a nail. By this point, Kirby is subjected to cruel torture. After having Squidward murder a homicidal Mrs. Stotch in "Road Rage", the screen zooms out to instantaneously reveal that Cub has elaborated an anchor dangling above Pop to kill him in a similar fashion, which it does. All for Oreos, apparently. Chef Pee Pee seemed to be jolly for once in "Blind Mistake", but his miraculous smile is flipped once Chef Pee Pee slips on a random puddle in the kitchen while carrying a vat filled with grease.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_222dc873 | comment |
"Home Sweet Pineapple - Gory Edition" is based on the episode with the same name, excluding the tagline "Gory Edition" for a reason. It plays out like the original version; SpongeBob's house gets eaten by nematodes and he moves into Patrick's rock for shelter. However, Gory Toons loves violence, so the straightforward task of resting under Patrick's rock crushes SpongeBob beneath its mass. Typical Black Comedy ensues and a helpless SpongeBob gets mutilated until he subsequently dies.

Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Virtually the entire cast discounting only a few exceptions, but some particular examples stand out: Cuddles, who might appear as the cuddly rabbit on the outside, is a rebellious, dangerous, and mischievously deranged prankster at heart. Kirby might seem as innocent and defenseless compared to everybody else, especially when taking into account his status as the residential chew toy, not even Kirby gone through the entire series without becoming the main antagonist of an episode, such as "The power of supernova" or "Happy Halloween!". SpongeBob himself. While his demeanor is consistently played as selfless, well-meaning, and optimistic, his body count is not something that should be glossed over.

Life-or-Limb Decision: Of course, Gory Toons made an episode based around this, specifically, "Homer or Limb". One of Homer's arms is trapped by a rock, and he spends the rest of the episode hacking his arm off. By biting it. After finally finishing, it is soon revealed that it wasn't the only appendage that had gotten stuck. The episode ends with a somewhat comedic "Doh", but we can already assume that he has become another Handy by the end of the episode.

Halloween Episode: In 2021, the first full-length Halloween episode has been released, titled "Zombodie Told Me". Its synopsis is about a zombified Cuddles going on a homicide. Beforehand, most Halloween specials were shorts. Also, "Happy Halloween!" and "Happy Halloween, Peeps" speaks for themselves.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_29ad1d69 | comment |
Facial Dialogue: Most characters do not speak verbally, instead when on-screen. Instead, any form of meaningful interaction is conveyed through expressions on the character's faces, like a snarky glance or toothy grin. If that isn't enough, however, the character would usually point to show another character something or wave their arms when frightened. Granted, there are many aversions throughout the series, mainly the instances where SpongeBob, Bart Simpson, and Eric Cartman speak in full sentences.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_32da91b8 | comment |
Out of Focus: Kirby, Stan Marsh, and pretty much nearly any supporting character prominent in the prototype era. Post-Prototype series (regular) episodes show especially reduced roles for Giggles, Flaky, and Sonic, none of them having their own spotlight episodes yet, with Sonic only getting one when Gory Toons started. Outside of special occasionsnote Off-season shorts (Break, Kringles, Love Bites, among other miscellaneous shorts), Smoochies, music videos, animated remakes, shorts (like Flaky being given the spotlight in "Flaky eats a corndog!"), they have been reduced to having "featuring" roles or brief appearances. Particularly, Sonic was absent from the sixth season, Giggles had only made two relevant appearances, while Flaky has not gotten a focus episode entirely since 2020.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_34dcfc96 | comment |
Kick the Dog: These episodes relies on death and murder after all. Eric Cartman torments Stewie Griffin with a lollipop in "Road Rage". In ""Are you feeling it now Mr. Krabs?", while Mr. Krabs had assaulted most of his costumers because they committed a minor offense, he kills Patrick for seemingly no reason. Stewie has a teacher assassinated in "Stewie's Lesson" just because he didn't liked her. In "OH NO! IT'S THE POPO!", where he literally steals a candy from a baby, that being Cub in this instance. As he grabbed the lollipop while Cub was bitting on it, he rips open Cub's jaw in the process. Cuddles in many instances, but the most notorious examples are him tormenting Kirby as a "prank" in "Cub the prodigy bear" and killing several victims as a zombie in "Zombodie Told Me".

Ignorant About Fire: Splendid's idea of putting out the fire that engulfed Kirby's house in "Splendid What Mondon't" was spraying it with Petunia's fart. Would Hurt a Child: Kirby inhales Craig Tucker in "The power of supernova". In many instances, Mr. Krabs has dismembered and murdered children for money. "Krabby Mascot" is a good example. Pop intentionally kills Cody by stomping on him in "Popping Me Out". SpongeBob cannibalizes Bart Simpson in "A Normal SpongeBob episode". Nobody hold any hesitance in throwing Kenny and Bart Simpson into outer space and crushing Cartman to death in "Among Us - Battle of the Multiverse edition". At some point in "The Kid Who Liked Wario A Little TOO MUCH", Wario is shown crushing Kenny underneath his body. Fliqpy disposes of Joseph in "Who gives a flippin' care", killed students in "Flippy the Bus Driver" and decapitates Stewie Griffin in "Oh Yeah Mr Krabs: Full Anime". Lumpy made no hesitation killing Cub to steal his lollipop in "OH NO! IT'S THE POPO!".

Comedic Sociopathy | |
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_4a4d6f7c | comment |
Comedic Sociopathy: Used heavily. Many episode storylines are quite reliant on characters voluntarily killing other Toons, and if an episode wasn't entirely dedicated to somebody planning homicide on another individual, then most characters would probably disregard another character's death, misfortune, safety, or critical wounds. "Road Rage" might be deemed the worst offender. Linda Stotch herself is a murderous brute when angered, as she casually strangled Wario and threw Kirby into a meat-grinder without remorse. Pop and Squidward decide to end her temperament by outright killing her as well. And then there's the ending... Cub murders his own father with a baited trap over a measly Oreo.

Downer Ending | |
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_4e3d253b | comment |
Downer Ending: A bit tamer than any Jeffy video or a Happy Tree Friends episode, but still, the heroes and sometimes even the villains get gruesome deaths that they don't deserve. In "Popping Me Out", Pop becomes worrisome after Cub had gone missing, causing him to go insane trying to look for him. By the end, Cub was unharmed the entire time. Sadly, Pop sits on Cub and unintentionally kills him before realizing. Kirby is probably the character who receives this the worst. Excluding "Kirby's quest... TO KILL!!!, most episodes with Kirby as the main character ends with him dying in a horrendous and excruciating way. "And It Just Fixs!" is undoubtedly the most heart-wrenching instance.

Early-Installment Weirdness
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_4f4372e9 | comment |
Early Installment Weirdness: Some examples: In early videos, the characters were much more intelligent and competent. While death was still relatively common, it was genuinely inedible and mainly caused by deliberate homicide. For example, every single death in "Eggman's new scheme", barring the very last, was an intentional kill on another character's part. There weren't many deaths in the first episode. Like barley at all! Some episodes had the Tree Friends computer-drawn in most close-up shots. Later episodes ditched this completely. The program used to animate the series was originally the very limited Kinzoa. The creator now uses a more professional software, "Windows Movie Maker". Watching the first five seasons and seeing characters like Chef Pee Pee, Petunia, Toothy, Homer and Pop as Living Props or in minor roles feels weird when you consider that they're well-established and recognized characters today. Though still consisting a fairly large cast, there weren't many characters featured in the series. Specifically, characters from The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park were completely absent as of this point, and disregarding the Tree Friends and most characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, most Toons who are regulars now were primarily background characters. Heck, anybody else aside from Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Fliqpy, Patrick, and Sniffles getting a spotlight episode was extremely rare. In general, the earlier episodes were absolutely nonsensical. Even putting aside the peculiar animation, which is a whole different can of worms, various characters from other internet stars were used, like GradeAUnderA, and most infamously, Tia from TheStarTraveler. In part, this was mainly because JTMONEYSMASHBROSBOB didn't even understood what he was doing. Earlier episodes had Kirby as the mischievous one while Cuddles was the character who constantly died. For example, in "Happy Halloween", Kirby was the character who pulled a lethal prank on his friends unprovoked and in another, he randomly eats a beaker and gives himself broken glass lodged into his jaw. In later episodes, Kirby is usually placed in roles as arguably the most normal character alongside Chef Pee Pee, Clara, Stewie Griffin, and Sharon Marsh.

Demographic-Dissonant Crossover: This show is this trope. Man on Fire: Kirby is briefly caught on fire by a fireplace in "And It Just Fixs!". Though, the fire inexplicably distinguish itself after Kirby jumps out a window. Cuddles, Toothy, and Sonic are all set on fire by a match in "You're Too Slow!". In "Splendid What Mondon't, both Kirby and Petunia are set ablaze by Splendid's clumsiness. In Kirby's case, his house inexplicably was already on fire, and Splendid attempts to put down the fire by using Petunia's skunk fart... Which has gone as expected. At that point, the fire has now caught onto Petunia as she was the one who produced the flatus. Splendid chucks Petunia into the air, and she explodes, setting the entire town into a mass forest fire. Straight away, Kirby has now burned into a skeleton, and at least Toad is burning to death. The fire is only stopped when Splendid punches Chilly, causing the snowman to burst into an icy explosion. Peter Griffin managed to set Giggles on fire in "Among Us - Battle of the Multiverse edition". In "Hyper-Activities", While Petunia dips her entire head in a pond to wash off a splash of blood on her forehead, Fliqpy pours gasoline into the water and tosses a lighter into the pond, causing it to catch on flames and burn Petunia's head until it was nothing but a skull. At the end of "YouTube episode", the hole in the volcano that the floodwater produced shoots out lava that sets Kirby's head on fire.

Facial Horror: Somewhat common. What becomes of Chef Pee Pee's face after having grease splashed all over it in "Blind Mistake". In "Pee Pee's Recipe", Chef Pee Pee suffers an especially ruthless one, where he slams his head into the grill face first and pulls himself off of it, only to have his face to be ripped off. In "All For Ski", Cuddles' face is shredded and his facial muscles are exposed by SpongeBob. In "Zombodie Told Me", Chef Pee Pee is whacked twice by Cuddles' mallet, the second time breaking open his face. What's left is a loose tongue, a visible lower jaw, and an eyeball dangling from an optic nerve.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_736d791f | comment |
Adaptational Badass: Though many characters are significantly weaker in Gory Toons than in canon, a few become rather formidable in this series. Pop was just a Bumbling Dad who most often killed his own son and sometimes himself due to his incompetence. In Gory Toons, he becomes rather agile and has appeared legitimately threating on the occasion his son's life gets endangered. Linda Stotch was an emotionally fragile woman that was submissive to her husband. On the contrary, the episode "Road Rage" makes her out as dangerously short-tempered. The same episode had Linda strangle Wario with her barehands. SpongeBob and Lumpy aren't so bright. Despite this, some episodes in Gory Toons have the characters prove themselves as rather vengeful and even heroic, with "Zombodie Told Me" and "Are you feeling it now Mr. Krabs" respectively being the most prominent examples.

Establishing Character Moment
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_7febc23b | comment |
Establishing Character Moment: While Battle of the Multiverse failed to properly introduced its characters, the Gory Toons reboot preforms a much better job establishing the main character's signature quirks, dynamics, and personalities: Cuddles' dangerously mischievous antics that leads to trouble for himself and any nearby friends. The irony of Kirby, a wholesome creature, suffering constant death that goes undeserved. Eric Cartman acting like a bully who antagonizes his peers. Pop's tendency to overreact and conjure up nonsensical or disproportionate solutions to rather mundane problems. Toothy's gradual characterization involving him engaging in mischievous alongside Cuddles and having the prosperity of acting irrational. Lumpy being overly confident, accomplishing a frequent kill count, and having a knack for creating plot-points at the last second. Nutty's perpetual hankering for sweets. The Mole participating in activities requiring sight, leading at the expense of others. Lifty & Shifty's status as thieving criminals. Flippy seemingly positive demeanor, only for said attitude to behave the opposite thanks to his murderous PTSD. Mime's constant silence due to his iconic occupation as a Mime. Kenny McCormick's trademarked shtick for dying. Splendid failing at his full-time duties as the local superhero thanks to his incompetence. Disco Bear's flamboyant yet loving support for his husband. Sonic's troublesome antics relating to his speed causing lethal mayhem. Wario's unfavorable behavior towards other characters thanks to his rude attitude. Sheila Broflovski's problematic activism to counter anything she deems offensive. Handy's sadistic glee whenever somebody is about to face their doom. Tom & Jerry's personal rivalry against each other that normally results in wacky chases. Clara's role as somebody who is genuinely sane in the dangerously stupidity-ridden world of Gory Toons.

Gainax Ending | |
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_82accf22 | comment |
Gainax Ending: Even if you lay aside the unusual plots, weird characterization, and many questions relating to Gory Toons as a whole, the endings of many episodes are truly insane. In "OH NO! IT'S THE POPO", the episode's climax speaks for itself. Seriously, it ends off with a scene where Brooklyn Guy and ezstick76 are digesting in the stomach of Petunia. You're definitely raising brows after reading that sentence. After a long day of fending off a mad Linda Stotch in "Road Rage", Pop takes a breather. Or so he thought, as the camera pans out to reveal an anchor placed above Pop that proceeds to fall on and kill him. A wooden sign then revealed that Cub had placed the anchor there because Pop had eaten an Oreo that Cub wanted. In "Pop Mate", after getting confronted by Brooklyn Guy and Chef Pee Pee, Lumpy suddenly transforms into a giant dinosaur. While this may act as a call back to "Banjo Frenzy", why and how Lumpy does this is never explained. In "Stewie's Lesson", after Peter Griffin had seemingly vanquished the sporadic earthquake, he walks outside to enjoy the grassy fields, only for the ground to crush Peter against the top of the screen. At the end of "Who gives a flippin' care", Flippy is about to kill Tom Cat next. However, just as he was about to make his next victim, the room gets engulfed into darkness and somehow, Fliqpy managed to turn a suburban home into a death trap consisting of spiked-walls. Said walls closes on Tom, crushing him to death.

Karmic Death | |
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_90d44f44 | comment |
Karmic Death: While most deaths in the series are accidental, a good chunk of them have been deliberate. As a result, there are many instances where a character deserves their inedible demise. Some notable examples include: Pop unremorsefully torments an already suffering Sonic throughout "You're Too Slow!" after the latter had unintentionally killed Cub and later on in the episode, constructs a brick wall with the intent of killing him. When Sonic runs into said wall, it explodes into numerous pieces, with one launched at Pop's face and partially decapitating him. After eating a Miracle Fruit in "The power of supernova", Kirby decides to inhale everybody else without receiving provocation from anyone. By the end of the episode, the closing-iris inhales Kirby himself and crushes him to death. In "Stewie's Lesson", the titular character arranged an elaborate scheme to murder his own kindergarten teacher out of petty grievance against her and murders Cuddles in the process to aid his diabolical plan. The procedure left some blood on Stewie's head, which Nutty mistakes for jelly and causes him to eat Stewie. Linda becomes hostile in "Road Rage", where she strangles Wario to death and murders Kirby by dropping him into a meat grinder. Afterward, Pop tricks Linda into walking under and getting crushed by a giant anchor held by Squidward.

Even Eric Cartman wasn't as barbastic at some point. Half the Man He Used to Be: Kirby's lower-half gets ripped off by Whistle in "And It Just Fixs!". In "Blind Mistake", Mr. Krabs is broken into two halves after slipping on a wet floor. In "Stewie's Lesson", Cuddles is saw in halves at the waist by Stewie Griffin. Afterward, Stewie proceeds to wear Cuddles' upperhalf and toss it onto his teacher to get her shot by Elmer Fidd. In "Among Us - Battle of the Multiverse edition", Pop gets his upper-half sliced off by Peter Griffin off-screen. In "OH NO! Characterisation Click Moment
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_96e3a281 | comment |
Characterisation Click Moment: The Reboot era provides several moments to firmly establish the characters' personalities. Kirby wasn't as relentlessly tormented in the earlier episodes and usually took as much damage he could deliver. Moreover, that role was initially handed over to Cuddles. However, "One Tough Cream Puff" decides to set stone the running shtick of Kirby suffering and dying repeatedly as a homage to Kenny McCormick. For a bizarre reason, Eric Cartman was portrayed as a normal kid who actively expressed remorse at another character's death. In his first major appearance in the Reboot era, he is characteristically presented as the obnoxious douchebag. Stewie Griffin was back as the villainous prodigy that was his characterization in the earlier seasons of Family Guy who actively caused trouble and showed no empathy for whatever character died in eyeshot. While Stewie has his moments, by the start of 2021, it was made very apparent that Stewie is the most normal yet also flamboyant and repellent-prone child in the show. For whatever reason, Petunia was undergoing the phase of having the exact identical personality to Giggles again. "Driving Me Crazy" allowed a glimpse of her true personality to shine, but "Come Clean, Scumbag" was the episode to truly demonstrate Petunia's neat freak persona. While Pop was already a usually dimwitted father since his first appearance, he was commonly the adult with relatively decent composure and and in some cases was one of the relatively more easy-going parents. In the Reboot era's "Cub the prodigy bear" was the first episode to focus on his individual penchant for Serious Business melodramas towards whatever was going on with the kids or elsewhere in Gory Toons. By "Popping Me Out" in Season 8, he has taken the mantle of spearheading clueless town mobs over whatever is the hot topic.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_985795ab | comment |
Medium Blending: We have three types: Most characters are animated using MS Paint, with the intent of making them much cartoonish and animated than the proceeding styles. Characters from Happy Tree Friends are animated using assets from the show. Said characters animated as such are more consistent in proportions, but have rubbery and ludicrous movement. Characters from South Park are animated using the same paper-cut-out style and stiff movement from the show. These characters aren't exactly as elastic nor exaggerated in a fashion as the aforementioned styles, but they still have their moments.

Made of Iron: Cro-Marmot, Flippy, Splendid, SpongeBob and Lumpy seem to be able to survive situations and wounds that would kill an ordinary hero (due to being entrapped in ice, serving in the military, and being a Flying Brick, respectively), making their deaths among the more gruesome ones in the show. In Lumpy's case, he is the tallest of the main cast, and with the exceptions of Splendid and possibly Evil Flippy, he is the strongest. In cases where Lumpy does not die immediately, he ends up getting injured. Meanwhile, SpongeBob's pliable body allows him to handle such punishment. Pop, Sheila, Linda, Stewie, and The Mole also seem to die somewhat less than other characters, although this can be attributed to luck more than anything else. Sharon has remarkably survived almost every single episode she has appeared in. On the other hand, Clara and Stan Marsh had suffered no deaths so far. Though, it seems to be derived from all three being more intelligent than the rest of the characters.

Leitmotif: Squidward has the same theme that is associated with him. Mr. Krabs has a good amount of themes associated with him, but the most common and famous is " The Rakehornpipe". Italian music can be heard whenever Chef Pee Pee appears. Pop and Cub's cheerful tune is heavily used for them. Junior has a children's-style cheerful theme. Jeffy has a goofy piano theme. Mario and his friends have a classical jazz theme. Nutty's iconic theme, which is a simple beat rhythm and short tune. Russell's pirate theme, which is usually accompanied by waves and ocean noises. Fliqpy's dark theme.

Random Events Plot: Many damn episodes are offenders of this very trope, be it either for the sake of death, humor, or Excuse Plot. In "Hyper-Activities" in particular, everything is shoved into the episode without a concise thought. It goes from SpongeBob and Cuddles playing soccer, to them having a race, then finding a guy who seals stuff, only for the episode to abruptly cut to SpongeBob hosting a dance party, and now the main characters are playing baseball, and then Cuddles gets ambushed by Lifty & Shifty and SpongeBob has to escape from the villains. Status Quo Is God: Despite the number of times that the main characters have been killed and the horrific ways in which this occurs, they'll always be alive and well by the next episode. Mr. Krabs is a fascinating example. This crustacean is a sociopath who needs to be treated in a lunatic asylum. Played more straight in later episodes where even the more obnoxious females such as Petunia and Sheila are far less shrill and prone to Idiot Balls. Played pretty straight with Sharon and especially Clara. Resultingly, they are among the characters with the highest survival rates.

Off-Model: Happens very often. But considering the animation budget, it was bound to happen. Toothy's notorious teeth discrepancy returns in full glory. Specifically, it switches between Toothy's iconic gapped teeth and the standard buckteeth the other Tree Friends have. Homer Simpson’s nose is sometimes mistakenly colored exactly like his beard. For some reason, SpongeBob’s holes and Kirby’s blush are constantly subjected to disappearing.

Animated Music Video: Quite a few: Such as the animated version of the Super Smash Bros. Brawl soundtrack "Ashley's Song", starring Giggles the Witch. "Moscow Music Video", featuring the song Moskau. Of course, the video intentionally misinterprets the lyrics via images and clips. Some imagery, however, mostly the ones featuring SpongeBob, is original. "Frozen hillslide music video". This stands out for the song actually being sung by the YouTuber "Edobean". Like the previous one, the video mainly consists of video clips, though original animation is also present in this one.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_b8e3f20a | comment |
Demoted to Extra: Sonic and Mr. Krabs haven't had much importance after the original series. They haven't had much luck in Gory Toons either. Not just them; Petunia, Cuddles, Grade, Patrick, Cro-Marmot, Kyle, Homer Simpson, Disco Bear, Cuphead, Flaky, Lammy, Mr. Pickles, Russell, The Mole, DoodleBob, SML Mario, Rosalina, and Jeffy's appearances have become rare and scarce also. Subverted with the likes of Cro-Marmot, Splendid, and Flippy, though, as they have had sporadic appearances since the beginning. The main mascots themselves. More and more episodes seem to follow the formula of "Pop does something stupid, while Cuddles and Kirby get maybe one cameo in the beginning at best, and enduring a brutal demise at worst". In particular, both Fliqpy and Flaky had significant roles. Even if their format has gotten repetitive, the spotlight was always traded between characters, SpongeBob was initially the character who just so happens to get the most episodes. Now, he literally became the main character, with every episode having something to do with him one way or another. Giggles was featured much more prominently in earlier episodes almost frequently. Nowadays, she is hardly in the spotlight anymore, showing up for featuring appearances or just small cameos, either to die or be background characters.

Pop is probably the character who fills this particular trope the most. Combined with his Bumbling Dad and Serious Business tendencies, his moments as the supposed hero normally prove that he is slowly devolving into this. For example, in "You're Too Slow!", while Pop does have justification to be angered by his son's death caused by Sonic, he veers away from Jerkass Woobie to borderline He Who Fights Monsters territory, where he schemes Sonic's death with sadistic enjoyment from the hedgehog's upcoming fate. Come to think of it, Sonic was completely oblivious to his surroundings thanks to the agonizing pain he was in, thus Pop is probably in the wrong more than one would already guess.

Anti-Hero: Even though several protagonists in Gory Toons have their spotlight as antagonistic bullies or explicit Villain Protagonists on too many occasions, most episodes portraying them in a non-vicious manner have depicted them as at least genuinely heroic. SpongeBob and Pop are especially subjects of this trope; they are most definitely not saints themselves and the supposed "heroic" methods they would use sometimes verge onto Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist levels of unscrupulousness, but their ambitions aren't usually selfish or sometimes genuinely resolves the conflict. Eric Cartman often qualifies in most episodes where he is performing a heroic deed alongside the other main characters, like "Cub the prodigy bear".

Nightmare Face: Fliqpy's Slasher Smile and demented, always-fully-open eyes that remain pasted to his face. Mr. Krab's mentally unhinged face is very uncanny and creepy. His angry eyes, crooked smile, and demonic laugh always provide a bit of actual horror. What's left of Chef Pee Pee's face after being slammed onto a hot grill in "Pee Pee's Recipe". The gruesome close-ups on Kirby's corpse and Chef Pee Pee's burned face in "Blind Mistake" are beyond the most grotesque examples.

An Arm and a Leg: Some injuries on the show. However, they never been a major point in a narrative. The most prominent cases of limb dismemberment were examples that directly begun a Mutilation Conga, like SpongeBob getting his arm skinned by a toilet in "Crappy Flush" and the incident in "Wario dies but it's more brutal", where Wario's arm gets sliced off by a window.

Adaptational Wimp: Because everybody is rendered hilariously fragile to suffer not-so-deadly injuries, nearly all of the characters are significantly weaker than their original depiction. Kirby and SpongeBob is where this distinction is especially noticable. King Dedede doesn't seem to possess any of his abilities he has in the Kirby series. Namely, he doesn't use his inhale technique at all and seemingly follows his own alleged species rather accurately by lacking his talent to fly. Fliqpy is noticeably more prone to dying and Lumpy appears to make a fool out of him regularly.

Art Evolution | |
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_e43c66bd | comment |
Art Evolution: The animation for the series has been a strange history to put it lightly. Back in early 2019, the animation was extremely flawed, but now, it's at least decent and smooth. One thing's for certain, however. The deaths have become more graphically detailed as the series progressed. From Season 1 to Season 4, the animation could hardly be referred to as such. Most frames were completely still, character models were drawn very crudely, the setting is quite literally a white void, and absolutely no sound effects were played, barring very few exceptions. Season 5 was slightly smoother, though its best distinct for the animation software no longer being the very limited app Kinzo than anything else. Season 6 was definitely a major step-up, but upon closer inspection, not by too much. While character designs are now designed as cuter, Happy Tree Friends characters are animated with proper assets instead of messy cutouts from screenshots, and the animation got smoother, but it was still fairly stiff. Beginning with "Driving Me Crazy", the gore has become more detailed and backgrounds were properly implemented. Starting from the episode "Super Pooper", the proportions of the Tree Friends are now consistent and in the South Park characters' first appearance in the Reboot Era, the students were animated using South Park assets to imitate the original show. Season 7 was showing significant improvement. Season 8 was trying and had several pros, though still had some noticeable bloopers. However, by the beginning of the Gory Toons reboot, the animation had improved immensely.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_e8cb930f | comment |
Accidental Suicide: Happens quite a bit: After spending the entirety of "You're Too Slow" gruesomely battered, Sonic aimlessly sprints into the brick wall designed to kill him. This results in a giant explosion that kills him and destroys the brick wall. In "Wario dies but it's more brutal", the titular character eats a spicy garlic, which literally sets his mouth on fire. After the set eventually ceases, Wario rests his arm on the window frame... which then closes down on it, chopping off his arm. Wario panics once more, prompting him to jump into the floor, break through the celling downstairs, and get himself painfully skinned alive. Upon noticing a donut in Patrick's hand in the episode "OH NO! IT'S THE POPO!", Lumpy takes an opportunity to use his taser to electrocute Patrick to steal his donut. After killing Patrick, Lumpy grabs the donut he killed the chubby starfish for, only for said donut to harness the electricity of the taser and electrocute Lumpy to death as well. Bludgeoned to Death: Chef Pee Pee's face is destroyed after getting pelted by Cuddles' mallet twice in "Zombodie Told Me". In "HAVE A BOWL, MR. SQUIDWARD", The Mole has his head repeatably smashed by Squidward with a hammer.

Deadly Rotary Fan: While it didn't necessarily kill him, Kirby's head is torn open by one in the episode "And It Just Fixs". Wario is shredded to pieces after getting pinned to the wall by a fan. Sniffles' death in "The Best Episode".

Ambidextrous Sprite: Lumpy's inverted antler, Russell's hook hand and eye patch, SpongeBob 's holes, and Nutty's lazy eye tend to change from side to side, often in contiguous shots. This is done so often that it almost seems intentional.

Lions and Tigers and Humans... Oh, My!: How could you even describe it? This universe basically consists of anthropomorphic mammals living in a society alongside humans, wearing clothes, going to school, owning houses, working jobs, all that. We even have talking and walking sea animals, especially SpongeBob.

Running Gag | |
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_f9f2c33 | comment |
Running Gag: Kirby dying before any other character does. Or namely, being played as a major character, only to be killed off. Every time a character would devour another whole in some fashion. Lumpy has the audacity to make constant appearances as a funny cameo or to suddenly cause a plot element. Toothy's eye injuries. Kenny dying Once per Episode. Whenever Handy can't do something because of his lack of hands or is annoyed by SpongeBob, or, just appears at all, he'll give the camera an annoyed glare and growl irritated. Other characters have also borrowed the expression at times.

The Dog Bites Back | |
Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_fb3576b2 | comment |
The Dog Bites Back: Kirby is usually mutilated, exploited, harmed, or antagonized by the other characters, which makes it double satisfying whenever he successfully kills them intentionally. Examples include "The power of supernova" or "The average day of the friends.". Usually, any episode featuring Pop and Cub will almost always have Pop foolishly killing the latter. But in "Road Rage", Cub intentionally murders his own father with an elaborate trap, which takes advantage of Pop's aforementioned stupidity. Granted, the motivation on Cub's part was rather petty, but maybe it was the straw that broke the camel's back. Tired of facing the obnoxious civilizations and their repulsive actions in "Come Clean, Scumbag", Petunia finally had enough and takes a stand against them by killing them all.

Battle of the Multiverse (Web Animation) / int_fccd06b6 | comment |
Beware the Nice Ones: SpongeBob is casually portrayed as a sociopath with a strange hankering for causing slaughter and destruction. But, of course, Depending on the Writer, he could be faithful to his canon depiction. Flippy usually is one of the nicest characters on the show, but once you remind him of the war, he'll become the psychopathic murderer Fliqpy. Linda Stotch is sympathetic and gentle usually, but in "Road Rage", she murders everybody who managed to plucked her last nerve.
