Fate/Gamers Only is a webcomic adapting the storyline of Fate/Grand Order starting from Singularity F, published on the r/grandorder subreddit by u/namtap032892. Starting as a short series based off a forum thread the author took part in titled "Save the world with two Servants of your choice" (with El-Melloi II and Tomoe Gozen as namtap's choices), the webcomic expanded to focus on its own take on the female protagonist, here named Rikku Marei. The comic is hosted on Reddit, but the pages have been uploaded to Deviantart here

Early on, Rikku has a computer-styled breakdown and faints upon meeting the "fictional" Sasaki. Upon meeting Historical Gender Flip Nero Claudius, she stops working once again, with literal smoke rising off her head. Upon meeting Francis Drake, she's just unamused at this point, and when meeting Oda and Okita, she bluntly states her childhood is ruined. Later on, Mash has a similar breakdown after Rikku hugs her.

After Rikku wakes up from her Heroic RRoD at the end of Septem, she finds Da Vinci next to her and accuses her of creepily sitting there the entire time, waiting for her to wake up. Da Vinci snaps back that she calculated the time Rikku would wake up and came in five minutes before, which Rikku says is also creepy.

Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_15b2cab3 | comment |
Tempting Fate: While Rikku is trying unsuccessfully to sleep on the Shaped Isle, she gets annoyed with everyone's bickering but finds relief in there not being any enemies. Cue Caligula. Discussed in the description for Comic 083: After Rikku meets Artemis and finds out that she's even worse than she imagined, she says that she hopes that they don't run into any of the male Greek heroes, especially Jason. Guess who shows up later in the same Singularity? Extra Comic 009 has Tomoe play Death end re;Quest and scoff at the content warning upon starting the game, saying that the violence probably isn't all that bad. Less than five minutes later, Tomoe is horrified by a scene of a monster biting off a girl's head described in vivid detail. The trope is used as the title for Comic 451, where as the gang arrives at Washington, Mash and Rama declare they've reached their destination and Rikku points out saying stuff like that is just begging for something to go wrong. Cue Medb, and Rikku says "See?!" in response.

Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_1777688d | comment |
Genre Savvy: Rikku applies knowledge from video games to figure out certain scenarios. The comic where Rikku accurately guesses that the explosion during the first Rayshift was sabotage just based off of the specific circumstances being so unnatural uses the trope name as its title. In Comic 392, Rikku is so used to the song and dance that she uses a whiteboard and writes uses three events that are likely to be happening in the town they're at; A knightly Rogue Servant protecting the town, an Anti-Hero beating up monsters for fun, or "A wannabe idol mistook them for fans, and subjected them to a free 'concert'." During the finale of America, Tomoe realizes that if they were in a video game, the current part of the narrative would call for a Heroic Sacrifice. She promptly stops Edison from doing this.

Mythology Gag: Caster Cu shouts "You're not human!" after being beat up by Rikku, the line characters would say in Carnival Phantasm whenever Cu's Lancer counterpart got killed almost every episode. Comic 059's title is "Today's Menu for the Chaldea Family". Comic 141 has Jeanne say that she's not comfortable with using a holy relic (the Ark) as a weapon to kill Heracles, and the description says that she should hope to not meet Ciel. Rikku wears Rin Tohsaka's outfit after arriving at Jekyll's house in London, with a note from namtap confirming that the headcanon that the Fujimarus are Shirou and Rin's children doesn't apply to Rikku. Rikku's line of humanity is ugly but individuals are beautiful is very close to what Merlin himself thinks about people, if only the opposite. The title of Extra Comic 007, "Rule Breaker", is a reference to Medea's Noble Phantasm of the same name. Rikku starting to sing Jingle Bells in Japanese turns the Mini Nobu into a chibi Santa Nero, who starts to sing the Padoru version of the song. Comic 276 has Shiki describe Souren Araya's experiment from the fifth The Garden of Sinners novel, along with how one person was able to break free from the cycle and the creator of the experiment is dead.

Soup Is Medicine: Emiya instructs Mash to make some chicken soup with lots of garlic for Rikku to help with her cold. Mash questions why Emiya doesn't make the soup instead since he's a much better cook, but he insists that Rikku would be happier if she knew the soup was made by Mash, and says that Mash probably wants to do something for Rikku anyway. Scolding the Fourth-Wall Breaker: Once the second Mephisto shows up during the The Garden of Sinners event, he mentions how he is easy to summon because he is a three-star Servant. Rikku tells him not to break the fourth wall, so the other Mephisto breaks the fourth wall because she didn't scold him. In EX 075, Rikku says that Mash's early explanation for becoming a Servant not matching up with later revelations is probably a result of early writing before the story was thought through and was retconned later. Tomoe asks Rikku not to break the fourth wall, and El-Melloi II shoots down Rikku's claim about needing to point out an obvious plot hole on the grounds that they need to maintain the readers' suspension of disbelief.

Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_5062bd9d | comment |
Unknowingly in Love: Mash, aside from being unable to tell Rikku has a crush on her (despite how terrible she is at hiding it), is unable to tell she shares the same feelings. This is primarily due to Mash having gotten a hangover that made her forget the inciting kiss (the following day when she admits to having forgotten recent events, she later acts flustered around Rikku and says she doesn't know why she feels this way). This is slowly phased out as Mash becomes more aware of how she enjoys Rikku's presence, albeit with the occasional embarrassed denial and instances where she can't quite pinpoint her feelings (Mash describes a moment where Rikku hits on her while in her underwear as causing "strange urges"). Even so, Mash is able to fall asleep in a tender embrace with Rikku after spending a night together without realizing they are essentially dating.

Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_5558641 | comment |
Gratuitous Japanese: Rikku utters a small "...itai..." after Tomoe slaps her. This is just one of several instances of her using Japanese in an otherwise English webcomic. During a conversation with Jeanne Alter, Rikku proceeds to say "Yes, yes. Stop" in Japanese. Lampshaded in Comic 169, where Rikku says "Matte, matte. Chotto matte, kudasai. Sumimasen, Sensei!" ("Wait, wait. Please wait a minute. Excuse me, Sensei!") to Andersen before making a request for a question, and Andersen says that he's unsure of why she suddenly addressed him in Japanese. Rikku does slowly start saying "Hai, hai" (roughly "Yeah, yeah" depending on the context) with a bit of increasing frequency.

Adaptational Early Appearance: Tomoe Gozen, whose True Name isn't revealed until her first appearance in the third Pseudo-Singularity in Part 1.5, is part of Rikku's first summon. Blackbeard ends up in Chaldea before his official first appearance in Okeanos to send extra outfits for Rikku to wear and influence events. While sneaking around, he laughs about no one knowing who he is yet because they haven't been to Okeanos. Astolfo is summoned before the first Christmas event, when the canon version said event featured a scene poking fun at how Astolfo wasn't summonable at the time. BB shows up in Extra Comic 21, as the reason why Rikku can play her games despite the world being destroyed. In canon, she didn't show up until Part 1.5 almost a year later.

Success Through Insanity: There's a common trend of characters trying to invoke Exact Words to get Rikku to do something they expect her to not want to do, only for her to be completely on board with their crazy/stupid idea. Case in point, Santa Alter tries to paint her exploits as just wanting to deliver presents and needing an alternative to her reindeer that ran away, and Rikku questions why she has to be the replacement reindeer, but expresses excitement about the idea of turning the sleigh into an "Excalibur-assisted fighter jet". EX Comic 037 has Dr. Roman perform a check on Rikku's mental health with him changing his analysis from "everything looks ok" to "it would be more accurate to say that your mental health is no worse than it usually is."

Mash gets depressed again during London about not knowing her Noble Phantasm's True Name and insists that she is a burden, so Rikku slaps her before saying that the Heroic Spirit inside of Mash isn't the one who has been journeying with her, and Mordred says that she's certain that Mash is stronger than the original Heroic Spirit. Rikku adds that some people are born to be heroes who perform great feats, but it take much more strength for a normal person like Mash to pull off the same.

Rikku provided ServantFes' Security with video evidence from Luluhawa's security cameras and testimonies from witnesses regarding Medb attempting to sabotage the other clubs, forcing Leonidas to escort her out. Since only members of the same club are allowed to run their booth and Rikku bribed the only other member of Medb's club, Anastasia, to crash at a hotel, Medb cannot sell any of her photobooks with their jewel-encrusted covers and is left in crippling debt.

Filler: The first batch of Extra Comics, by namtap's own acknowledgement, were created because they needed time and inspiration since they were initially focused on clearing the third summer event (with Mash addressing Rikku being stuck writing doujins in the event at the start of Extra Comic 001). note Word of God when the EX Comics came back to Summer 3 reveals that namtap was grinding in the event when the first EX comics were made. However, namtap later announced that the Extra Comics would become a recurring trend on weekends for the sake of Slice of Life antics, having enjoyed doing the first batch. Given the main comic's 'present' is well behind the game's, namtap can use the Extra Comics to jump ahead to future events or feature future characters.

Oh, Crap!: Upon finding out Kiyohime's identity in Orleans, Rikku panics and tells Mash to save her. This repeats when Kiyohime comes to Chaldea. Caligula has a very worried expression right after Rikku orders El-Melloi II to buff Tomoe before the latter uses her Noble Phantasm to kill him. Said word-for-word as a bullet ricochets towards Rikku while she is experimenting with her magic abilities. A more minor example occurs when Rikku realizes that she mentioned Death Note during a conversation with Mash and tells her to please not look it up. Uesugi Artoria only gets to let out a "Wha-?" before Oda's Command Spell-powered Three Line Formation fills her with holes. Everyone looks shocked (except Shakespeare, who looks excited) when Rikku says that she's going to set off some dynamite. Mash looks progressively more worried as she hears about Rikku's intense work schedule in EX Comic 016. During Rikku and Artoria Lily's training session, Lily attempts to use her Noble Phantasm and Rikku gets alarmed before diving for cover because Caliburn would kill her.

Loophole Abuse: Medb in Extra Comic 007 wins her own beauty contest by entering multiple times in different outfits, since there isn't a rule saying she couldn't. Rikku responds by not only doing the same, but threatening the judges at gunpoint to give her a score higher than 11 because there are no rules against threats or a stated score limit of 10. Medb is unable to disqualify her because invalidating Rikku's cheating should invalidate her own cheating too. Rikku materializes dynamite using the device that changes her clothes by telling it that her desired item is part of her clothing, as she found out that it can't tell the difference between clothing and other objects.

El-Melloi II points out this doesn't match up with later revelations about Mash, and Rikku decides it was probably the writers not having thought the story through fully and retconning stuff while hoping the players wouldn't notice.

Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: The supplies Da Vinci gave the cast for the Orleans Singularity include two versions of the True Ether Mystic Code, with the female version having an exposed midriff. Rikku would rather not show off her midriff and takes the top from the male version, much to Da Vinci's disappointment. When entering Septem, Rikku finds that Da Vinci swapped the male top out for another version in eye-searing bright colors to encourage her to wear an outfit with a midriff, which doesn't work until Nero forces her into the alternate outfit after being convinced by Da Vinci that Rikku lacks confidence to want to wear it.

Everyone Has Standards: Villains like Blackbeard and Caesar, and heroes like Mordred, are unnerved when Rikku starts acting no-nonsense, with Mordred being shocked when Rikku threatens to tear off Paracelsus's limbs for his intentions of manipulating any of the Masterless-Servants summoned by the fog. Tomoe has witnessed a lot of violence during wartime, but is horrified by Death end re;Quest featuring a scene describing a girl having her head bitten off by a monster. She's also taken back by the utterly dark ending of Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2's Conquest Ending. Ushiwakamaru hates Medb's guts, but wonders if Rikku mowing down Medb's simps with a gatling gun (albeit one with rubber bullets rather than live ammo) before beating her up makes them the bad guys in that scenario. Rikku refuses to use her magical abilities to help her beat video games since she views it as cheating.

When Nero disguises herself as Rikku, she says that the outfit (a sleeveless top and jeans) feels "immodest", despite normally wearing a dress with both a Cleavage Window and a butt window. Dr. Roman gets worried when he hears that Rikku is going to have Mash join her next gaming marathon with El-Melloi II and Tomoe, assuming that they're going to play "corruptive" games to be a bad influence on Mash. Rikku points out that Dr. Roman used Chaldea's resources to recreate net idol Magi Mari, and therefore has no right to comment on her hobbies. Oda cannot believe that Uesugi is a woman and says that she can't possibly be a girl, to which Rikku tells her to go and look in a mirror. Berserk Button: Don't insult Da Vinci's sense of aesthetics. She won't let you hear the end of it. Using or hurting children to Rikku. Who claims she'll be a 'Villain' if it means opposing those who use them for the 'Greater Good'. Best shown when she scolds both Roman and Da Vinci for sending Jack the Ripper to halt Tesla. Later during the Santa Alter event, Rikku threatens Saber Alter when she intends to fight Jack and Nursery Rhyme. Rikku hates manipulative types of people like Jason and Paracelsus, as they remind her of her mother. EX 078 ("Berserker Button") revolves around this. Rikku is playing a game with a weapon called the Sword of Achilles with the sound muted because hearing Achilles' name would piss off Penthesilea (who has a huge mad-on for the guy) and lead to the console and the TV being obliterated. After Rikku and Mash manage to have a conversation about the situation without saying his name through the use of euphemisms and word-swaps, Osabekihime walks in and asks what's wrong with saying Achilles' name, resulting in an angry Penthesilea barging in.

You Are Better Than You Think You Are
Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_c3b51bb3 | comment |
You Are Better Than You Think You Are: The comic's version of Mash revealing that she doesn't know the True Name of the Heroic Spirit inside of her has Rikku refuse to believe that Mash is "defective" and then point out the hardships she has gone through to protect everyone already make her a hero. Sasaki and Siegfried assure Rikku that she isn't a "monster" for taking gray actions to save others. The adaptation of El-Melloi II's first Interlude has Rikku get fed up about not being able to fight on the front lines like her Servants, but get assured that her insight is already a great help to the team. Rikku mentions during a counselling session with Dr. Roman that she hates how she's ordering others to do "unreasonable and inhumane orders" as her only contribution and doesn't even do the actions herself, but Dr. Roman says that her Servants listen to her because they believe in her rather than because of her Command Spells. Rikku opens up more with Mash during London about how she was afraid that Mash would hate the "real" her if they got too close. Mash points out that Rikku has been kind to her and always believed in her ever since they first met, encourages others and takes responsibility for their actions, constantly risks her life, and comforted her all the way back when they both thought they were going to die, finishing by asking "How could I possibly hate you?" During London, Rikku accepts that she is a hypocrite for using morally-questionable methods to minimize casualties while calling out others for using similar methods for their own ideals. Mash reminds Rikku of her motivating her when she was depressed back in Fuyuki and adds that Rikku has always treated her Servants like people rather than tools like "most mages would", and that her actions are still "those of a good person" while never involving manipulation or attempts to justify themselves, so she should stop looking down on herself. Mordred begins to doubt herself when Artoria Lancer Alter appears, but Rikku inspires her by telling her that that the Servant in front of them isn't her father, and encourage her to start rebelling more. At the end of the "My God Is With Me" arc, Rikku says this to Jeanne Alter, telling her that she does exist and vows to find a way to summon her for real.

After running outside, it turns out Kiyohime followed everyone back to Chaldea, and the chapter ends with Rikku yelling for Mash's help since she doesn't want to die.

Ship Tease | |
Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_dcb9c541 | comment |
Ship Tease: It's pretty clear that Rikku has a crush on Mash. Some examples: After a battle in Septem, Rikku says that she doesn't mind being pressed against Mash because she was pressed up against Mash in particular. When Rikku gets drunk during the drinking party with Francis Drake in Okeanos and Mash tries to tell her that the Grail is present, Rikku stares at Mash and says "Yes... And she's beautiful..." before kissing Mash on the lips. Mash ends up with Rikku's hangover and forgets about the kiss thanks to her poison-resistance (much to Rikku's relief), but is now attracted to her despite not remembering why. During the first Halloween event, Kiyohime calls Rikku her husband. Rikku prepares to follow up by saying that her wife is Mash, but cuts herself off before she can finish saying her name. Mash gets disappointed because she wanted to find out what Rikku's type is, but Dr. Roman says that she doesn't have to worry. During the first GUDAGUDA Event, when Cu playing his role as Shimazu Setanta asks for Rikku and Mash's hearts, Rikku says hers has already been taken. Guess who? For the cast's trip to Scotland Yard, Rikku takes great delight in being "princess-carried" by Mash and thinks to herself that she can die happy. After waking up from Jeanne's first Interlude, Rikku finds that she's giving Mash a lap pillow and gets very excited. She tries to research the Knights of the Round Table to take her attention away from Mash, blushing all the while ("Ignore the adorable little Mashmallow snuggled on your lap... This is so hard!"), and Mash blushes too when she wakes up and realizes that she was sleeping on Rikku's lap. Fran reveals that she was the one who made Rikku give Mash a lap pillow, and Mash thanks her. While trying to motivate Mash, Rikku says that Mash has been "supporting [her] heart". She quickly tries to backpedal and says that Mash is really cute before blushing nervously while Mordred starts talking. During the Santa Alter event, when Rikku is apologizing to Martha about Japan turning Christmas Eve into a couple's holiday similar to Valentine's Day, she also calls herself a "wimp who can't even ask a girl out on Christmas". After Rikku returns from delivering presents with Santa Alter, she requests for Mash to give her a hug pillow. Mash blushes upon hearing the idea before Rikku tackles her and falls asleep. In EX Comic 024, Rikku and Mash spent a night together watching anime and fell asleep in what Da Vinci describes as a tender embrace. Blackbeard laments that they aren't officially dating though because neither of them realize that they are dating. Mash brings some chicken soup to Rikku's room to help deal with her cold, and Tamamo Cat stops her from leaving by starting off her advice to spoon feed Rikku with "When your husb- I mean, girlfriend's sick". Mash is flustered by being called Rikku's girlfriend, but goes along with Cat's advice. Rikku asks if she died and went to Heaven before eating the first spoonfull. Naturally, the Valentine's Day event plays up their relationship. Rikku goes to sleep early after getting help from Da Vinci making a special Valentine's chocolate for Mash, and ends up pulling Mash into her bed in her sleep when she comes in to leave her own chocolate and letter. The next morning, Rikku is delighted to be sharing a bed with Mash and gives her a lap pillow, but also expresses disappointment in not being awake when she dragged Mash in. After Rikku gives Mash her Valentine's chocolate, the kohai faints from happiness. Non Rikku and Mash-related example: In EX Comic 038, Rikku asks Saber Lily what type of man she would like to marry. After Lily gives her description, Rikku thinks to herself that there's someone in the Round Table who fits the description (*cough* Bedivere). To drive the point home further, in the Christmas-themed EX Comic 039, a panel about spending time with that "special someone" (which incidentally includes Rikku and Mash), Lily and Bedivere are together. After defeating Artoria Lancer Alter, Shiki makes a comment about how overly-huge her breasts are and suggests everyone leave. Rikku agrees, and says that she thinks "the perfect size would be Maaaaa-" before deciding to shut up. In EX 052, Mash finds Rikku asleep on a couch and thinks she looks uncomfortable. Mash looks around (while blushing) to make sure no one else is around before giving Rikku a lap pillow, commenting on how cute her face is when she sleeps. Stheno and Osabekihime arrive and take a picture to Mash's frustration. The adaptation of Medusa's Interlude, just like the source material, has Mash express jealousy at her Master and Medusa's date. Rikku promises to make up for it by making Mash dinner later, who blushes in response. As Tomoe points out when Rikku is telling her and El-Melloi II about what happened when she first arrived at Chaldea, the very first thing Rikku did after meeting Mash was hit on her. Rikku admits that it sounds kind of bad when put that way, but agrees with Tomoe's summary. Right after Dr. Roman is horrified by Mash's new Stripperific Servant outfit, Rikku states that she's seen worse at conventions and "Besides, she looks haw-! Er... Shutting up now." After Rikku is healed from the injuries being shot by a cannon caused her, Mash blushes and asks if she could get dressed because she is still in her underwear. Rikku says she doesn't mind being seen by Mash, who requests for her to not say things like that because it causes "strange urges". In EX 114, Rikku acts more flirty from having not eaten in a while, kissing Mash on the back of her neck and calling her "delicious". namtap acknowledges that Rikku gets more flirty when she's not thinking straight.

According to namtap's notes, Rikku didn't even notice that she called him that the first time, but "He's just so much like that one gruff teacher that the students love because he's actually a good teacher that she called him that automatically." El-Melloi thinks to himself at one point that he'd like to protest being called "Sensei", but decides that it sounds "natural" coming from Rikku. During the third summer event, Rikku calls Jeane d'Arc Alter "Alty". She doesn't like being called that.

Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_e3c36782 | comment |
Call-Forward: After meeting Da Vinci and finding that she resembles the Mona Lisa, Rikku recalls King Arthur being a woman back in Fuyuki and asks herself if Miyamoto Musashi will turn out to be a woman (Shimousa), if Sasaki Koujirou will be real (also Shimousa, but appears first in Orleans here), and if Oda Nobunaga will turn out to be a dork (GUDAGUDA), adding that she would like to meet Sanada Yukimura (Emiya acts as a stand in for him during GUDAGUDA events). During London, Rikku researches the Knights of the Round Table after a throw-away line from Mordred leads her to believe that the Heroic Spirit fused with Mash is a member. Her research results in her finding a mention of a shield belonging to Galahad before being cut off by Mash waking up. So close to figuring out the Heroic Spirit's identity two Singularities early! After Mordred compares Dr. Roman to Merlin during London, Rikku jokes that they're actually pretty alike and says that she wouldn't be surprised if Merlin was also interested in MagiMari. People who have played the Solomon chapter will know that Merlin is MagiMari. As Charles Babbage is disappearing, Rikku asks him if he can transform. He finds the idea interesting and says that he will look into it if he's summoned to protect humanity. The second Summer event has Babbage transform into a train as Fran's race car. Rikku asks during the first Christmas event why everything needs to be resolved with violence and says that she would prefer something like a murder mystery, hinting at the future "Murder at the Kogetsukan" event. d'Eon's maid disguise from the Agartha chapter is hinted at during the adaptation of the first Christmas event, where Santa Alter gifts d'Eon a maid outfit and Rikku decides (while laughing) that they must wear it. In EX 043, Rikku mentions Tomoe using her new PSVR to play Beat Saber, referencing Tomoe's Summer variant that wears a VR headset and has animations referencing Beat Saber.

Insomnia Episode: Comics 076 and 077 involve Rikku trying to sleep and responding to everyone's noisy bickering with snarky statements as she tries to get some rest. Once Caligula arrives, Rikku reaches her Rage Breaking Point and orders El-Melloi II and Tomoe to kill him on the spot.

Running Gag | |
Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_f9f2c33 | comment |
Running Gag: Early on, Rikku has a computer-styled breakdown and faints upon meeting the "fictional" Sasaki. The bucket Rikku uses to shut up Jeanne Alter becomes a recurring tool, occasionally being substituted for a pot to perform the same purpose (being weaponized). The victims will always ask "What the hell?!" afterward. In the description for Comic 158 (titled "GUDAGUDA Running Gag"), where Rikku stuffs a pot onto Toyotomi Gilyoshi's head, namtap admitted that it wasn't meant to be a running gag originally and that "It just... happened." Da Vinci trying to force Rikku into skimpy outfits and the resultant tension between them comes up frequently. Eventually, other Servants like d'Eon and Medea get in on dressing Rikku up.

Comically Missing the Point: After Asterios carries the gang's ship ashore, Euryale calls him out for opening up his wounds and asks "what kind of moron" would do such a thing. Asterios smiles as he says "...This kind...of...moron."

Brick Joke: During Orleans, Rikku requests for Da Vinci to make her some flashbangs and sunglasses. Near the start of Okeanos, she dons the sunglasses and throws a flashbang at a random pirate, mentioning that she never got to use it during Septem.

Talking Is a Free Action
Fate/Gamers Only (Webcomic) / int_ff5a74c8 | comment |
Talking Is a Free Action: Defied at the start of the rematch with Blackbeard, where Rikku interrupts his speech by trying to fire a cannon at him, but misses because she never used one before and her hand slipped. Blackbeard calls her out on it, saying that it's a common anime trope to not interrupt a transformation sequence or an enemy's monologue, but Rikku says that anyone who lets the former finish deserves to lose, and the latter only happens if both sides are idiots.
