Bump in the Night was a Stop Motion animated series by Danger Productions and the American Broadcasting Company's in-house studio Greengrass Productions, lasting from September, 1994 to December, 1995. It covers the adventures of Mr. Bumpy (Jim Cummings), a small green monster living under the bed of a 10 year old boy, and his friends Squishington (Rob Paulsen), a blue monster that lives in the bathroom's toilet tank, and Miss Molly Coddle (Gail Matthius note a Saturday Night Live alumnus from its infamous sixth season), the comfort doll who belongs to the boy's sister. They spend their time getting into all sorts of hijinks while dealing with Destructo (Cummings), a toy robot who militantly enforces rules, and trying to avoid the Closet Monster. The development of the series began as a series of Ad Bumpers for ABC's Saturday morning lineup in 1993, possibly, the reason he's called Mr. Bumpy is because he was originally used as a character for bumpers alongside Squishington and Molly. The series lasted for two seasons, and concluded with a 90 minute long Christmas Special. The format of a usual episode included two cartoons and a "Karaoke Cafe" segment where the characters sung a song.

Look Behind You: Mr. Bumpy occasionally does this, telling Destructo that he sees Molly's Comet in "Long, Long Day" and claiming to see a two-headed, pink polka dot monkey riding a unicycle in "Not a Leg to Stand On." When Bumpy unconvincingly tries to hide the wig he used to disguise himself as Molly in "Love's Labor Bumped", Molly tricks him into turning around by claiming that there's a sock behind him.

Jerk with a Heart of Gold
Bump in the Night / int_4781adbb | comment |
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mr. Bumpy can be greedy and selfish at times, but he always shows remorse when his actions cause harm to his friends and wishes for them to be happy. One episode even had him trying to find a bunny to cheer up a sick Squishington and is so upset by his repeated failures to acquire one that he tries to get himself eaten by the Closet Monster even as Squishington tells him that it's okay he let him down.

Paper-Thin Disguise | |
Bump in the Night / int_48b9731f | comment |
Paper-Thin Disguise: Mr. Bumpy sometimes uses disguises that are obviously very poor. In "Penny for Your Thoughts", Mr. Bumpy tries to avoid the pennies that appear whenever he thinks by distracting them with a cardboard cutout of himself while wearing a cowboy hat and a fake mustache. In "Love's Labor Bumped", Bumpy finds out that Destructo has a crush on Molly Coddle and proceeds to mess with him by disguising himself as Molly. All he wears for a disguise is a large wig resembling Molly's hair, a glove resembling Molly's right arm, and a red and white legging like the one Molly wears on her left leg. It bears mentioning that Molly is a humanoid-shaped doll, while Bumpy is a short green monster with purple warts. In the episode "Not a Leg to Stand On", Bumpy tried to avoid being punished for allegedly stealing Molly's feet by disguising himself as Squishington's "Cousin Bela", a relative who doesn't exist. His Cousin Bela disguise is nothing more than a fake blue nose, fake eyebrows, a fake mustache, and a hat with a feather in it.

Downer Ending: A few, though they are all Zigzagged. "Love's Labor Bumped" ends with Mr. Bumpy getting beaten up by Destructo and Molly Coddle. Bumpy was however being extremely obnoxious and rude to both of them through the whole episode, so it isn't unjustified. "Bump and Roll" ends with the Cute Dolls hurling Bumpy and Squishy into the sun. Though this is Played for Laughs and naturally Negative Continuity ensures they survive. A lot of episodes end with random explosions as punctuation marks, a trend prabably launched in "Danger: Unexploded Squishington" when the clock extracted from Squishy's belly really does turn out to be a bomb.

Hypocritical Humor: In "Story Problems", the boy claims to be good at spelling and then misspells "dead" as "D-E-D". Molly Coddle admonishes Mr. Bumpy for trying to use a baseball bat indoors because someone could get hurt in "Beauty and the Bump", but she ends up accidentally hurting people anyway because screams of pain can be heard after she tosses the bat away.

Despair Event Horizon: While it’s more Played for Laughs, Mr. Bumpy comes pretty close to this in “Hocus Dopus, after trying (and failing) numerous times to pull a rabbit out of a hat to cheer up a sick Squishington. Bumpy thinks Squishy will never forgive him (despite Squishy saying to his face numerous times that he does), and starts to head towards the Closet Monster’s lair, fully intending to feed himself to it. Thankfully, Squishington was able to sneak a bunny slipper into the hat and convince Mr. Bumpy to try one more time before he did anything drastic.

Running Gag | |
Bump in the Night / int_f9f2c33 | comment |
Running Gag: The episode "Beauty and the Bump" has the running gag of Mr. Bumpy trying to solve his problems by using a baseball bat only for one of the other characters to yell at him because doing so is unsafe. This especially gets ludicrous in his dream sequence when he answers the troll's riddle "Why can't a vampire get a date?", as Mr. Bumpy's answer is merely a pun on the word "bat" (Because he has bat breath) as opposed to using a bat to hit things. This is used a lot, especially to facilitate the re-used animation. The same Booby Trap, involving a bowling ball rolling down a ramp, is sprung multiple times in "Comforting the Uncomfortable." Squishy is hit twice with the same safe in "Night of the Living Bread." And Bumpy is amused by a remote control that sprouts fungus in "Danger: Unexploded Squishington."

Bump in the Night / int_fdc4fab4 | comment |
Depending on the Writer: It varies in every episode whether Squishington is more intelligent (or at least has more common sense) than Mr. Bumpy or if he is dumber than Bumpy. For example, Squishington is depicted as the brighter of the pair in "Sock it to Me" and "Better Homes and Garbage", both of which have him trying to get Mr. Bumpy to stop making shortsighted decisions, whereas "Danger: Unexploded Squishington" has him getting himself into trouble because he failed to listen to Bumpy's warnings about eating in the dark. It works the other way around for Mr. Bumpy. In "Adventures in Microbia" Bumpy, who usually hates cleanliness, is all too eager to help Squishy shrink to microscopic size to fight off germs in the bathroom.
