The X's have a young boy named Truman, a teenage girl named Tuesday, and many gadgets at their disposal. An organization called S.N.A.F.U. Every year, from the time he was a baby, he had high hopes it would be the best birthday ever, only for those hopes to be dashed when his family's given a mission. Even on the very birthday that takes place in the episode, his family has to take a mission. The only good thing that comes out of it is that he meets his dog and the newest addition to the family. Home Base has a rather awful birthday in "Missing Home". The X's forget his birthday for more than half of the episode and don't treat him nicely, and he gets house-napped by S.N.A.F.U. and tormented by Glowface, who wants to know secrets about the X's. Thankfully, the X's eventually see the error of their ways, save Home Base and reconcile with him.

Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: After the X's almost blew their cover on a picnic, Mr. X complains about his wife kicking other people, Truman blasting everything, and Tuesday's nay-saying. When Truman tries to get his family interested in Halloween in "The Haunting of Home Base", Tuesday points out that they see scarier stuff every day, listing Glowface and Sasquatch as examples, before Mrs. X adds, "Your father's ingrown back hair," and shudders. During the group therapy session Glowface gives the X's in "Family Issues", he diagnoses their "problems" as follows: Mr. X's laziness stems from a craving for support from his wife, Mrs. X's nagging comes from a fear of being unloved by her husband, Tuesday's rebellion is a cry for attention, and Truman's just a little weenie. Bait-and-Switch: When the X's are assigned to protect a foreign ambassador at an art museum, Mr. X plans to disguise himself as a small child. While stating this offscreen, it seems like he disguised himself as a baby in a carriage, only for him to show up wearing a Little Lord Fauntleroy costume and holding a giant lollipop. In "To Err Is Truman", when Tuesday gives Truman a tube of superglue to play with in an attempt to get him in trouble, at first it sounds like Truman is thinking about getting into mischief, only for Home Base to appear, having changed his voice to sound like Truman's. In "In-Law Enforcement", Glowface plans to stretch Mr. and Mrs. X like spaghetti, stating that he got the idea while eating dinner the previous night. He asks the kids to guess what he had, and Tuesday says "We-", only to get interrupted by Glowface saying he had chicken pot pie.

Didn't Think This Through
The X's / int_8d0785d5 | comment |
Didn't Think This Through/Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Glowface has a habit of not considering that his actions can give the X's an advantage. For example: In "No More Mrs. Nice X", he puts Mr. X and the kids in life-threatening danger to make Mrs. X aggressive again, and after he succeeds, he's initially pleased, but soon realizes his mistake. In "Y's Up", Glowface activates a force field to protect himself and Lorenzo from the X's and Y's, saying that nothing can get inside it. Later, when he points this out to the X's, Tuesday asks, "Oh, really? Not even... air?", making Glowface realize his mistake, and soon he turns off the force field, which of course prompts the X's to strike. The group therapy session Glowface gives the X's to solve their "Family Issues" makes it easier for them to stop him.

Doomsday Device: Glowface has plenty of these. Some are just plain silly, such as a machine that fills swimming pools with rotten meat, while a few others, including the Sonic Destructor, are actually dangerous. Played with in "You Only Sneeze Twice". Glowface had already built a device he wanted to use to bring Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower to life so he could make them wrestle. After he got sick, Lorenzo modified the device so that it could reverse the earth's gravity. In the end, neither of them get to use the machine for their intended purposes, as after seeing the sick members of the X's and S.N.A.F.U. trying to fight each other, Tuesday decides to destroy it and- to her brief confusion- is soon joined by Lorenzo (who was in a "let's just get this over with" mood).

Truman when, after hearing about an upcoming trip to Pepe's Lagoon, he remembers that he rigged the toilets with bombs as a prank earlier in "To Err Is Truman". Lorenzo in "No More Mrs Nice X" when he sees that Glowface, who was just thrown by Mrs. X, is about to hit him. Two examples in one scene in "X Takes a Holiday": First, Glowface and Lorenzo both have this reaction and run away when Truman fires shark missiles from his X-o-suit at them, then after Truman wonders where they went, he sees Glowface's airship and says, "Poop" before lasers are fired from it. Inconsistent Coloring: There's often a lack of consistency in coloring, whether it's characters' clothes or the background color. Notable examples include the background of the Glowy-F Rap video changing color every shot in "Wealth vs. Stealth", and in "X Takes a Holiday", the color scheme of Lorenzo's clothes changes several times all in one night.

We Want Our Jerk Back!: In "No More Mrs. Nice X", Mrs. X becomes a relaxed, doting mother after returning from a retreat. While Tuesday likes the change, Truman doesn't, and is actually mortified by how normal his mom is. Towards the climax, every one (even Glowface) actually wants Mrs. X's former persona for differing reasons. Once she's back to her old self, Tuesday commentates that while it would be nice to have a non-violent mother, she loves her combative mother just the way she is.

Shout-Out | |
The X's / int_c75df49a | comment |
Shout-Out: In addition to the James Bond-esque episode titles, one episode ha Mrs. X tells Tuesday, "Your license to kill does not include your brother." A few episodes have Mr. X exclaim, "Great Fleming's ghost!", a nod to Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels. Mr. X has a shoe phone like Maxwell Smart. At one point in "Pinheads", Mr. X does Fred Flinstone's "Twinkle Toes" move. Take a wild guess for "Glow-zilla" and "Truman-zilla". In "Secret Agent Manual", Truman watches a parody of Yu-Gi-Oh!. At one point in "To Err Is Truman", Truman says, "I hope Dad didn't drink all the purple stuff", a reference to a Sunny Delight commercial from 1991. Another scene in the same episode has Tuesday say, "Truman, come out and play!" while tempting him with a tube of super glue. In "On Her Majesty's Postal Service", one of the names mentioned in Tuesday's diary when Mr. X reads it is Susie Carmichael. Truman says "Aaayyy" like Fonzie while wearing sunglasses in "From Crusha with Love". Also in that episode there's an Expy of Whack-a-Mole at Pork E. Bacon's called "Wacky Rat". When the X's go trick-or-treating at the end of "The Haunting of Home Base", Tuesday is dressed as the Bride of Frankenstein. Earlier in the same episode, a teddy bear possessed by the virus Glowface planted in Home Base spins it's head 360 degrees, a nod to The Exorcist. In "Breaking Camp", the song Glowface performs in his musical "High Seas Hijinks" resembles "I Am the Captain of the Pinafore" from H.M.S. Pinafore. Kimla's hairstyle resembles that of Princess Leia in A New Hope.

Suspiciously Specific Denial: Whenever casual bystanders are confused by the antics of the X's, they state they are not spies. In "Breaking Camp", when Truman calls his dad and tells him the counselors went missing, he denies having anything to do with it. At this time, the counselors are in a cage hanging in the air, and they're all angry at him. A note telling the X's where Glowface's new headquarters is says "This is not a trap. Honest, it really isn't."

Brick Joke: In the first few minutes of "Pinheads", Glowface leads Lorenzo, Sasquatch and Brandon in three heists. Near the end of the episode, after they beat the X's in a bowling match, Glowface is suddenly placed in a cage. After he questions this, Mr. X reminds him of the heists committed before the match. In "You Only Sneeze Twice", one of Mr. X's requests for Tuesday is to put on a movie about a spy family. At the end of the episode, when she gets her family's virus, he offers to put on the same kind of movie for her. In "Breaking Camp", Mrs. X tries to teach the few campers a loon call, but accidentally summons an angry group of wild animals. Later, when Truman has to save his family, he uses that call to sic the animals on the bad guys. At the beginning of "X Takes a Holiday", Tuesday is telling one of her classmates on the phone about the party she and Truman are planning to throw and assures the person that her parents won't be there to do the Funky Chicken. Later, while Tuesday is lying to her mom on the phone about throwing a party when she and Truman have actually been taken captive by Glowface, Mrs. X expresses regret that she and her husband couldn't join their kids, saying "Your father and I would've done the Funky Chicken." In "Wee House", Truman calls Tuesday a poop-head after she gets him in trouble. Later, when their parents find out that her teasing Truman about his short height caused him to move out of the house and build his mini-house in the yard, Mr. X calls Tuesday a poop-head.
