Wishing to prove his worth as a hero, Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, another recent arrival to Earth named Tails (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey), and together they embark on a journey to find the Master Emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.The movie has a comic tie-in from IDW (who also publishes the comic for the main game series), called Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill. It released on March 30th (a week before the movie's official release) and shows what the characters were up to between movies.On February 15, it was announced that a third Sonic movie was in development, as well as a spin-off series for Paramount+ starring Knuckles the Echidna. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will release on December 20, 2024, while the spin-off series will debut on April 26, 2024. While traversing the labyrinth containing the Master Emerald, Robotnik declares that he's worked out the timings of the Booby Traps, and that one will be triggered every seven seconds. He hasn't even finished the sentence yet when a Pendulum of Death descends from the ceiling and passes just centimeters from his face, forcing him to revise his calculations. During the final confrontation with Robotnik, Tails manages to dodge a Macross Missile Massacre in his biplane with Sonic on top of the plane. Sonic says that was a "close one" and laughs it off, only to get launched off of Tails' plane by one last missile, and then the biplane gets a wing crushed by the robot's moustache clamping shut over it. Knuckles attempts to keep Tom and Maddie away from Super Sonic, reluctantly informing them that he is no longer the Sonic they once knew. Super Sonic then uses his terrifying reality-warping powers to... create a chili dog for him to eat, and makes another one for Knuckles, which humorously splatters on his face. Knuckles then takes back what he said, and states that "he is exactly the Sonic [they] once knew".

While Knuckles starts off as Sonic's rival in the games to protect the Master Emerald, his reason for hunting him down in the movie is much more personal, as he blames Sonic and Longclaw for the destruction of his tribe and wants to kill the former. But luckily, Sonic becomes more sympathetic to Knuckles. And they become friends.

During an earlier fight, Knuckles tries and fails to hit Sonic with Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs, Sonic managing to dodge these relatively easily. Sonic mocks him for being unable to live up to his namesake... right before one of the punches connects and sends him flying across the room. In the "I make this look good" part where Knuckles is chasing Sonic down a snowy mountain, Sonic boasts that he's ahead of Knuckles despite his lack of training, and remarks how embarrassing it must be for him. One ramp jump later, and Knuckles punches straight through the ramp to catch up to Sonic, who is in a very bad spot in midair. Before entering a bar for shelter, Sonic claims to Tails that all humans are very hospitable. Unfortunately, the humans in the bar they went into are, in fact, not very hospitable at all. After G.U.N. has Robotnik's lab surrounded, Commander Walters boasts that the Doctor's not a big man anymore without any of his Badniks. Cue Robotnik creating the Death Egg Robot with the Master Emerald's powers via a giant tornado.

Justified in that in his original appearance, Knuckles was strong enough to knock Sonic out of his Super state with a single punch, so his strength here is fairly close to canon. He also states repeatedly that he has trained with his tribe for years.

When they fight again later, Sonic has to rely on his superior speed to fend Knuckles off and avoid being hit in return. Later on, when Sonic needs to run across the ocean to catch up with Knuckles and Eggman, he does well for a while. That is, until he finds out the hard way that while the water may be perfectly flat by the shore, the further you go out to sea, the stronger the waves become. Robotnik was only able to build all of his fantastic machines not with Offscreen Villain Dark Matter but with funding and connections from the US military. While Knuckles has tremendous Super-Strength, when heâ€™s unexpectedly pinned underwater by a fallen pillar, he canâ€™t lift it off himself due to having no leverage or way to brace himself, as well as the risk of drowning from the rising waters, and thus would have drowned without Sonicâ€™s help. Unlike in the video game series, Robotnik uses Chaos energy directly without hooking it up to a machine as a power source, becoming a very powerful Evil Sorcerer capable of floating, shooting bolts of energy, conjuring up tornadoes, and psychically constructing machinery of massive scale and lethality with only his mind and scrap parts from around Green Hills. In the games Super Sonic rarely demostarted any powers beyond being a Flying Brick, here he's shown to be an outright Reality Warper. Additionally, in most continuities this form has a very strict time limit, with Sonic requiring a steady supply of rings to maintain it. In this movie, there's no mention of any such limit, and Sonic only returns to normal once he voluntarily gives up the emeralds' power in recognition of the fact that he still has "a lot of growing up to do".

To be fair, Tails didn't know that Knuckles was about to have a change of heart. Played for Laughs when Sonic calls Tom up to use the emergency ring and save him and a knocked out Tails from an incoming avalanche. However Tom mixed up the rings while he was talking with Randell earlier and realize he gave him the emergency ring by accident rather then Rachel's wedding ring. Forcing Tom to have to interrupt the ceremony to retrieve it and, having no time to get somewhere discreet, throw the ring right in front of the ceremony to allow Sonic and Tails to come though with the avalanche coming in right behind them and plowing some of the guests in snow. However this likewise lead to GUN having all the proof they needed that the Wachoskis were hiding Sonic and they quickly reveal themselves and their sting operation to capture Sonic and Tails. G.U.N. sets up a sting operation and captures Sonic and Tails, despite them trying to save the world from being conquered by Robotnik. They quickly get called out on it and the GUN commander relents after seeing the beam of light in the sky from where the emerald temple is meaning Robotnik and Knuckles are close to finding it.

A bit more speculative, but at one point, Rachel uses a ray gun that Tails invented against Commander Walters, and later just throws it on the ground within his eye-shot. It's not clear if the one that Tails uses in the climax is the same one. Rachel soon reconciles with Agent Randall after learning that their wedding was a sting operation to capture Sonic. We don't know if they get married for real afterwards, and they're absent for the rest of the movie. The strange figures in the opening that attack Robotnik prior to Knuckles making his first appearance. After the fight ends and Knuckles arrives, the identities of the strange fighters that appear aren't revealed,note The tie-in comic shows these were alien trackers Knuckles had hired to look for Sonic. Likely the reason they found Robotnik was due to the signal he sent out, which Knuckles detected. nor do they appear for the rest of the movie.
