Out of the blue, Iris Lana Armelia suddenly awakens to the memories of her previous life as a Japanese accountant who distracted herself from her lack of love and family by playing otome games. And Iris? She was the villainous rival of Baroness Yuri for the heart of Prince Edward in You Are My Princess, an otome game that the accountant had been playing recently. A little too late, it turns out, because she's already in the middle of the downfall scene, cast aside by her own cheating fiancee and brother in front of a large group of nobles. Quickly gathering her wits about her, she courts the sympathy of the surrounding crowd by expressing her shock at the prince's adultery and retreats with as much dignity and grace as possible. She then travels to see her father, the prime minister Duke Armelia. While at first he is inclined to send her to a monastery for the rest of her life, her quick appraisal of the situation that brought her here and her clear intelligence changes his mind. Instead, he "punishes" her by sending her into "exile" in the family manor in Armelia. It'd be a shame to put her abilities to waste, though, wouldn't it? While she's there she can act as the fief lord. This allows Iris to put her old life's abilities to good use. Tax reform. Luxury items. Social programs. Anything it takes to bring power and prestige to house Armelia. However, even as she establishes a new company, Yuri and Edward's group don't seem inclined to just let her retire and keep to herself. The English adaptation of the manga is licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment, who is also set to bring over the light novels. The original Japanese manga can be found here and the original novel can be found here. The main story was completed after five volumes, but the author then decided to continue the story by writing a prequel series about Iris' mother Merellis.

Annoying Younger Sibling: Ed and Bern. The former is a callow, vapid youth, and the latter is one of his lamprey-like supporters. Both cause considerable grief to their older siblings and extended families. Bern grows out of it, Ed… not so much.

Instant Expert: Iris is running the largest corporation in the country before she'd be considered a legal adult in Japan. She lampshades that a young girl shouldn't be expected to be as successful as her, but there are some justifications. One, she's running a new business model based on other successful businesses that just haven't been developed in Tasmeria yet. Two, she's extremely well-connected. Three, she sells products that don't have any direct competition, giving her at least brief monopolies.

Love Ruins the Realm | |
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_147996f2 | comment |
Love Ruins the Realm: Apparently a hobby of the Tasmerian royal family. The king married a woman who was quite low in the peerage. This caused quite a lot of problems for him and weakened royal authority for quite some time. The queen bears him two children before her untimely death Then the king remarries, choosing his favourite concubine. Who had just assassinated the Queen. This means his children by the queen had to hide out in the Queen Dowager's palace until they came of age. This sets up a succession battle in the future between the children of the previous queen and the current queen. Twil inserts a Honey Trap into the Royal palace but she abandons her mission due to love. One generation later, her daughter seduces the Second Prince and his entourage (the future Duke of Armelia, the future Pope and the future Knight Commander) leading them to disastrous policies that would have spelt the end of Tasmeria. As it stands it weakens the country terribly. Prince Edward openly scorns his fiancee from a ducal house for a girl born from a baron's family. It is the problem with his father all over again. By choosing a vacuous fiancee of low birth instead of an eminently capable woman from high nobility, Edward made his quest to become king much, much harder than it really needs to be since it makes everyone question his judgement.

Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_154aa477 | comment |
Big, Screwed-Up Family: The Royal Family is a mess. There's a succession crisis, the current Queen killed the previous one and is trying to kill her stepchildren, the older prince is a Broken Bird with trust issues after losing his mother and him and his sister being failed by their dad, the younger prince is a Royal Brat disliked by his half siblings and the King is too weak willed to do anything about any of this. And this was before Edward got engaged to a girl who is a moron at best and a Gold Digger at worst with increasing hints suggesting she is a spy.

Good Is Not Soft: Iris is a genuine altruist who feels joy when improving the lives of everyone around her and just wants to be left in peace, but she will destroy those who threaten her, her family, her fief or her people. Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_23473ae7 | comment |
Adaptation Expansion: The manga adds a fair number of small scenes to help progress the character relationships a little more obviously. For example, Bern telling Yuri that she was a waste of his time wasn't in the LN but was added to show him coming to his senses. Dean finding an error that even Iris missed in the documents also shows that he's the only person she's ever met that can stand as an equal to her and her drunken confession that she can't open up to or trust people was only underlying subtext for most of the story.

Genre Deconstruction | |
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_23e32a30 | comment |
Genre Deconstruction: The series is pretty much all about how otome game logic would destroy a kingdom, or at least seems to like going out of its way to point it out. The king had one wife who died some time ago after producing an heir as well as a concubine who produced a second potential heir. He loved his wife more, but since her family had lower standing it created some political turmoil. This was not addressed in the game, but in the world Iris now finds herself in it's left a very precarious situation. Otome game logic would resonate with modern audiences well but such a situation will not bode well to the people living in a world that follows a Medieval fantasy setting where nobles are generally expected to be in a political marriage to improve the standings of their house and the well-being of the land. In the game, Iris was banished to a monastery after harassing the heroine. In real life, her family's status is so much higher that the incident would have been quashed entirely if not for a couple inconvenient factors and still isn't a big deal politically speaking. While she does almost get sent to the church, this turns out to have been for entirely unrelated reasons from the start: Her father just wanted her sheltered away from dangerous politics that she seemingly couldn't handle.

Persona Non Grata | |
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_26852e3d | comment |
Persona Non Grata: Bern comes very close at the beginning of the story. After turning on his sister he is only barely tolerated at home. All the servants hate him and want him gone while his mother makes it clear that she considered publicly disowning him. Iris herself also becomes one when she's denounced by the church for having torn down the old monastery, since it's akin to being declared a criminal - other territories start making sanctions against her, crippling her trade routes, many of her civil servants and company employees leave their posts, and even her family members are at risk of losing their positions. If she hadn't been able to prove it was a Frame-Up, the Armelia house would've essentially been erased from the kingdom.

Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_2cac89cf | comment |
The Ingenue: Deconstructed. Setting aside Yuri's implied manipulations for a moment, the very qualities that make her appealing to Bern and Edward make her completely unsuitable to be a queen. Bern compares her to a dream once he's wised up: She's relaxing and fulfilling, but also basically devoid of any substance. Her bubbly personality is considered a liability as she commits one faux pas after another and brings out the worst in her otherwise admirable suitors.

Succession Crisis | |
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_2d768e2d | comment |
The Duchy of Almeria is large, powerful, rich and strategically positioned. The Duke of Almeria is the Prime Minister, the Duchess is the daughter of the kingdom's greatest general (who is effectively head of the army) and Iris (the de facto feudal lord) runs one of the largest companies in the kingdom which makes the Ducal House independent of tax revenue. In a Succession Crisis, they could easily be kingmakers. Edward's faction constantly attacks them, despite their neutral stance, because of his personal antipathy for Iris. Little wonder that they are eventually driven to the opposing camp.

Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_32785419 | comment |
Redemption Rejection: Iris has absolutely no reason to accept Van's offer an alliance given that she has a good reason to have a grudge against him and what he offers doesn't really do anything for her fief. However, she decides to give him a chance after all, though her reaction makes it clear that she's just giving him enough rope to hang himself with and doesn't trust him in the slightest. Sure enough, he turns out to be The Mole, so Iris easily foils his plan and has him executed for treason. After all, he's no longer anything approaching nobility and conspired the downfall of the lady ruling the realm he had willingly entered and joined.

Brilliant, but Lazy: Iris was not an accomplished student, which helped fuel Bern's ego. However, this was mostly due to a lack of effort or interest, which is in large part due to her infatuation with Edward. Once she's kicked out of school she quickly makes a name for herself.

Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_3ac583f4 | comment |
Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism: A frequent theme of the story is maintaining the actual scale. A lot of the idealistic concepts Iris wants are only possible through hard work and a lot of patience, and it's easy to become cynical when the rest of the nobility largely keeps to themselves and let their fiefs suffer in favor of lining their own pockets. The most idealistic character on the surface, Yuri, is ruining Tasmeria's future because she's not balancing out her idealist actions with the cynicism to accept that just throwing parties and giving out food aren't going to solve Tasmeria's problems. However, while it's difficult to remain an idealist in Tasmeria's society, the story itself lands firmly on the idealist side of things, since effort, patience, moderation, and planning ultimately bear fruit for the Armelia Duchy.

Secret Test of Character: Earl Sagittaria quizzes Iris on the quick rate of improvement Armelia has gone through to determine her intentions for improving her subjects' lives so dramatically over the course of three years, hitting her with the observation that it seems she's consolidating power for revolt. He quickly folds when Iris gives a heartfelt answer on how everything she's done has been to aid her people, not for a power grab, implying he knew from the start (as he would as Iris' father's subordinate), but cautions her that while her aim is noble and pure, she falls under Skilled, but Naive for not even considering there will be other nobles who make the same claim of the Armelia Duchy without hyperbole due to just how powerful it's becoming.

Love Hurts | |
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_424d15ad | comment |
Love Hurts: A massive theme in the story is the fallout Iris is internalizing given the disastrous break-up with Edward, which ended with her expulsion and exile from the noble community for over three years. While she does a good job hiding the emotional turmoil, the event left Iris a Broken Ace as a result of the trauma, implied to be even worse due to the event happening just as the accountant becomes one with Iris, meaning she is suddenly experiencing every feeling Iris ever felt for Edward while he's denouncing her and ruining her life. Iris frequently associates love with pain, the potential for betrayal, and the burden of the expectation in Tasmeria's society that she'll likely have to stop working, something she absolutely enjoys.

Uncanny Valley Girl: Yuri disturbs people like Iris' mother who don't fall for her flattery because they realize they can't read her at all. The manga, in keeping with this, makes her subtly off by drawing her in a more shoujo style with big sparkly eyes than the manga's normal josei style.

Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Iris' father seems like a scheming politician who only spares her banishment because of her newfound understanding of her value as a noblewoman, but afterward when discussing things with his wife it's revealed that she wasn't actually right. Instead, he just wants to give her a chance to make something of herself now that she seems more intelligent than he thought. Do Well, But Not Perfect: Not focused on or invoked, but one of the few consequences of Iris bringing modern economics to Tasmeria is that the fief she's managing benefits so quickly in a three-year timespan that at least one prominent noble is convinced the Armelia Duchy is trying to improve its standing in preparation for a power-grab revolt, a thought process that takes form because most other noble families in Tasmeria adhere to this trope in an effort to hoard as much of their fief's gains for themselves and avoid Tall Poppy Syndrome.

Corrupt Church: Because the Church of Daryl doesn't answer to any authority, there's a lot of unchecked corruption in it. The Daryl faith's pope and cardinals, over time, have become little more than corrupt nobles, though they technically lack titles. Reassigned to Antarctica Invoked. Iris is almost forced to become a nun at the start of the story, but her clever presentation of the situation that got her in trouble and explanation for why it's not really a big problem anyway impresses her pragmatic father. To punish her, he sends her into 'confinement' at their ducal fief where he can't really keep an eye on her to make sure she's being chastised and, you know, it'd be kind of a waste to have her do nothing, so why not make her acting fief lord? After Edward's unsuccessful coup attempt, many of his allies are executed and their heirs sent to monasteries and other forms of social exclusion.

Anchored Ship: The only serious ship in the series is Dean and Iris, but progress is very slow because of issues on both their parts: Dean doesn't want a relationship with Iris despite loving her because she'll make his judgment worse if he's always thinking about her. He also thinks that what's most beautiful about her is her passion and hard work, which he feels she couldn't express if she was married and had to worry about family issues. Iris realizes how she feels later than Dean does, but quietly bottles up her feelings and buries them deep down due to the trauma Edward inflicted on her. Then Bern associates himself very strongly with Alfred's camp, which means it's politically near impossible for Iris to do the same and maintain the house's independence.

Unwitting Pawn Bern, Dorsen, Van and Edward are all being manipulated by Yuri as she leads them on, though her single POV chapter does imply that she genuinely loves Edward at least a little. Bern realizes that she and Edward are bad influences on him and draws away while Dorsen slowly starts to dwell on how his feelings for Yuri made him treat a girl that he simply assumed was a villain but, oops, she's actually a really good person and had every right to be angry with Yuri. Yuri is implied to be one herself. Iris and her allies speculate she's just one more pawn of the Tweil government and not a particularly valuable one at that. Her first POV chapter strongly implies that she genuinely loves Edward even though she's intentionally manipulating him and wasn't comfortable with abandoning Van.

Actually, I Am Him: An unintentional example on Iris's part — she goes and mingles with the people of the Armelia fief under the name "Alice", considering the anonymity a good way to look at how her policies are unfolding and what else needs to be done. When she's falsely denounced by the church and has to make a statement to clear her name, the angry (at Iris, that is) townspeople are shocked to discover that she's the fief lord, but it also helps her case since they all know "Alice" isn't the person who would do that kind of thing.

Rejected Apology When Bern apologizes to Iris, she doesn't really respond much at first. He presses her on it to make her aware of his sincerity and she eventually accepts it, but says she can't forgive him yet. When Dorsen starts to realize what he truly did to Iris, he starts making plans to give a halfhearted apology so he can feel better without admitting he was wrong. Before he can even get to her (and be rejected) her guards refuse to let him near her. When they do finally speak, before even apologizing he recognizes that she won't accept an apology and he doesn't really have the right to give one, so he leaves peacefully and goes on a journey of self improvement so that he can actually live up to his ideals and never do something like that again.

What Does She See in Him? Played with. After Iris is cast out but before she's even gone so far as to actually leave the academy, she wonders to herself how she could have loved someone as vitriolic and selfish as Edward. The more time passes, the more it baffles and possibly even shames her. When people look from Yuri to Iris and back, they're baffled at how Edward could have let someone as amazing as Iris get away. She's at least as attractive as Yuri, smarter, richer, more popular, and has a better pedigree. Yuri doesn't really offer much of anything except being cute and a flatterer and while she isn't as dumb as she looks, she definitely looks quite dim.

Love Is a Weakness: The story considers love to be something that will surely make you happy, at least in the short term, but is also likely to leave you unbalanced and cause poor decision making. Iris did poorly in school and failed to notice how dangerous Yuri was, causing her expulsion. Edward goes from a well meaning prince to someone edging ever closer to The Caligula. The king was so brokenhearted by the queen's death that he just gave up on life. Dean refuses to pursue Iris in part because he thinks what he loves most about her would be hurt by tying her down but also in part because she causes him to soften up when he feels he needs to be harsh.

Protagonist-Centered Morality: The otome game that the Accountant was reborn as Iris into ran on this. It was regarded as a just and good thing that Iris was punished for bullying Yuri because Yuri is the protagonist. Reality bites when it is no longer a game; Yuri had just poached the Second Prince from his fiancee. As such Iris not only had a right to be wrathful but it would have justifiably broken any nascent alliance between House Armelia and the Second Prince's faction. Up to that point with Bern in his retinue and Iris as his fiancee, such backing was nearly assured in the long term.

Didn't Think This Through: The Pope excommunicates Iris for tearing down a condemned building so she could build a new one, because it used to be a church before it was sold and allowed to fall into disrepair. After she manages to defend herself by proving that the Church had sold the land and had signed off on her plans months before they excommunicated her over them, she flips the tables and points out that if knocking down a church is blasphemy, surely selling one in the first place must be a greater one, right? Yuri's plans on how to run the kingdom seem really stupid to Bern when he thinks about them objectively rather than automatically approving of everything that comes out of her mouth because she said it. Such as reducing the size of the military to fund soup kitchens, because if they aren't at war, they don't need soldiers. First, they are technically at war, there just hadn't been fights beyond border skirmishes in years. Second, soldiers do other work, like securing the roads from bandits. Third, sacking that many people in one go without warning will likely just put more people in line for the soup kitchens (and some might go bandit to survive). Of course, it's entirely possible that Yuri (or at least Divan) did think this through, and wanted those disastrous side effects to happen.

However, it's an empty threat because of the three most powerful military powers in the kingdom, the Armelia family controls one, the allied Anderson family commands and mostly makes up the second and the third is loyal to the royal family who, funny story, have Alfred as their head because he's still the crown prince, no matter how loudly Edward says he's king now.

You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He doesn't die, but when the Pope is removed as the head of the Daryl religion, the next time his son Van speaks to Yuri, he just gets a 'Who are you again?' response. He has no idea how to process this and ends up moving to Iris' side because he has nowhere else to go. However, it's also implied that Yuri was genuinely uncomfortable with doing this as she asked her handler afterward if it was really necessary to cut him loose so blatantly. Later, after Edward's failed coup and the imprisonment of him and Yuri, Divan cuts HER loose to take the fall in a jail cell, implying he'd left her to die.

Paper Tiger: After the massive flooding causes crippling damage to the country's infrastructure and agriculture, Edward's faction begins extorting Armelia for relief funds. When she finally gets sick of putting up with them, they make it clear they intend to declare war on her. However, by this point, despite seeming to be the more powerful prince and having the queen's backing, they have no military power left while Iris' extended family controls two of the three most powerful military forces in the country. The third belongs to crown prince Alfred, meaning Edward has no military strength at all.

Dida and Lyle rejecting her offers to join them hits especially hard, given their talent and her personal interest in Lyle, who she feels is similar to herself. She loses it completely when Alfred seizes the throne not long after and she's abandoned by Divan.

Heel Realization When Bern sees how hardworking and accomplished Iris is and how idle and foolish his friends and Yuri are, he recognizes how stupid he's been for the past two years and instantly starts passing information about Edward's movements to his family. He later also recognizes what a dick he was to his sister and apologizes not just for causing social turmoil by turning against his family, but for hurting her so thoughtlessly. Unlike Bern, even after Dorsen realizes he was a jerk to Iris he struggles to avoid admitting that he was actually the bad guy. Like maybe he overreacted and caused her some problems, but she was still the bad guy, right? So if he apologizes, everything will be fine and he can get back to his life. However, the emptiness of such a gesture is pointed out to him by others when Iris refuses to see him, so he gets desperate and travels to her fief, only to get more indicators that she's actually a really good person and he screwed up badly.

Upper-Class Twit: After seeing how angry his household is at him and how accomplished his sister is, when Bern goes back to school he's increasingly horrified at how stupid all his friends are. For instance, Edward considers inviting the head of the Azuta conglomerate to the castle, completely unaware that she's his snubbed ex-fiance. This level of ignorance is bad enough, but made worse by the fact that he at least knows that the company headquarters are in the Armelia fiefdom, meaning anyone important there surely hates him and his fiancee.

Feminist Fantasy: The protagonist lives in a patriarchal society but after her father acknowledges her talent she becomes an excellent (albeit temporal) fief lord. Later on Letitia tells Alfred that a system where half of the population is ignored is an unfair system. In the same conversation, Bern asks for his sister to become the permanent heir to their family instead of marrying to a foreigner prince, arguing that if she was a man there's no way the kingdom wouldn't cling to her talent. Iris even becomes president of a massive conglomerate famed throughout the entire kingdom, and later even foreign countries, something that's noted to be exceptionally rare (though not impossible) for women normally.

Jerkass Realization: After seeing how hard his sister and family are working and how wasteful and useless his friends are in actually aiding the kingdom, Bern realizes that he should never have turned against the Armelia house to side with the second prince, beginning to work as something like The Mole for them afterward by continuing to move with Edward but secretly passing information to his family. He later owns up to his mistake in siding with them in the first place and apologizes to Iris for turning on her when she needed him most. She accepts the apology, but says she can't forgive him yet. Dorsen is the second to recognize his mistake, finally realizing that he basically ruined the life of a girl who had a completely legitimate grievance with absolutely no substantial evidence that she did anything to begin with, never having spoken to her and seeing that at the very least she's a talented woman able to command the complete loyalty of some of the finest soldiers Dorsen has ever seen. Celibate Hero: Well, Heroine: Early on, it's indicated that having her engagement broken off and being at least publicly shamed in high society has cut off Iris' chances of marriage. However, after becoming independently wealthy, gorgeous and having a ducal house to back her up this becomes very downplayed with several nobles wishing their family was of high enough status to be able to court her. However, Iris herself is still too emotionally scarred and pursues work singlemindedly. Her friend getting stuck in an arranged marriage (which is eventually called off thanks to Iris) makes her feel forced into accepting a proposal from a foreign prince, even though she'd surely be miserable with him. The only person who could change her mind is Alfred, but political issues get in the way.

Giving Radio to the Romans: Downplayed. Iris doesn't know enough about modern technology to pass anything useful along there, but she does know how to make some simple luxury items like chocolate and the basics behind silk and cosmetics, none of which are available in Armelia or the kingdom as a whole. Coupled with modern financial, educational, accounting and administrative policies, she quickly causes an economic boom in her fief. She has to give up on some of her ideas such as a sales tax, though, because there just isn't a good way to implement them this far ahead of when they'd normally be developed.

Deliberate Values Dissonance: The social hierarchy is rigidly recognized and enforced, even by Iris. Marrying for love among the nobility is also considered as something rather foolish, though it's recognized that getting in the way of a Perfectly Arranged Marriage is a terrible idea. When Yuri and Edward begin going against these norms they bring shame on themselves even if what they're saying sounds reasonable from a modern perspective if you don't pay too much attention to the context. However, in context, it's pretty clear that Edward is only saying this out of self-interest rather than any genuinely altruistic motivations and his hypocrisy becomes obvious as soon as he runs out of good arguments and falls back on being the prince.

Pyrrhic Victory: The original game explicitly gives Yuri, the Player Character, a Happily Ever After ending for three of the four capture targets. The ending where she steals Iris's fiance, Prince Edward, on the other hand, merely goes into detail about how Iris received her rightful punishment and had her life ruined. It becomes increasingly apparent as the story progresses that even if Iris had met her original ending in this world, Yuri's schemes for Prince Edward would have been unlikely to turn out well for her.

Heir Club for Men | |
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_b2f4114e | comment |
Heir Club for Men Iris is put in charging of managing the ducal fiefdom and does such a fantastic job that her family is seriously considering just skipping Bern for succession entirely. He was first in line despite being her younger brother, but her sheer talent and effort compared to his wasting his time really shows the difference between them. However, in the end despite being significantly more capable than him it's indicated that she'll be ultimately sidelined, most likely due to her gender. Not that it would matter much for her anyway since she's still a wealthy businesswoman who heads her own very successful conglomerate that has significant influence over the whole fiefdom. Then Bern chooses to give up his right of succession to Iris, making her the official heir. Played straight with Arya. Her older brother the crown prince died before succeeding the throne, putting her first in line. However, a female monarch was unprecedented, so she quickly made to marry a duke who became the king rather than a prince consort. That being said, she was still probably the more powerful of the two and keeps herself involved in the state of affairs. Her granddaughter makes a point of averting this when she takes the crown and makes it explicit that she is the ruling monarch and not her husband. Fittingly, her husband ends up being Bern, who'd already given up his own inheritance to his older sister because of recognizing she was better suited for the position than him.

Too Dumb to Live: The Duchy of Almeria is large, powerful, rich and strategically positioned. Earlier, the capture targets are also completely taken in by Yuri's suggestion that the best way to relieve the burden on the kingdom's coffers would be to disband the military, despite the fact that a nearby country has made war with them repeatedly in the past, and they're all in positions to know exactly what a threat Tweil poses. Bern, the only one who realizes this fact, tries to tell Edward, who tells him off and ignores it.

Tyrant Takes the Helm: Played with. After the Katabelia family resigns as the head of the royal knight order a new leader is appointed by the queen. While his only appearance is largely inoffensive due to brevity, he comes across as incompetent and somewhat entitled. The knights refused to accept him as a result resulting in them essentially defecting to Alfred's faction. Tried by Prince Edward who simply declares himself the new monarch upon the king's death. Not only is this in contravention of the kingdom's laws but it also sets up a confrontation with a noble whose fief has been supplying 40% of the entire kingdom's food supply. When Edward fails to answer the noble's queries with anything more than "I'm king now, you do as I say", he threatens the noble with the army if the noble does not fall in line. This is the noble who supplies 40% of the kingdom with food; even if the king had enough provisions and money to move the army without that noble's support, the fighting would most likely ruin the harvest dooming the kingdom to mass starvation.

Non-Standard Character Design: In the manga, Yuri is clearly drawn in a different style than the other characters. While most of the cast is drawn in the more serious josei style, Yuri is drawn in the shoujo style. This causes her to look subtly off because she doesn't blend in with everyone else and ends up looking creepy and artificial.

Suspicious Spending: The plot thread about Tweili spies gets started when Iris wonders how a noble from a fairly small and poor province is able to afford being a regular customer at her company's exclusive boutiques. Mundane Made Awesome: Iris frequently abuses this trope, understanding that what would have been commonplace in contemporary Japan, such as hair care products, an established capitalist system, and chocolate, would be so revolutionary to Tasmeria that it would make her rich within months. Part of the reason she rations out these products and concepts are to keep hype going for Azuta so it can continue accruing capital that can then be used to expand her fief's holdings and then be invested into wellfare and support programs for the poor and downtrodden, such as healthcare and schooling, which fit the exact same trope the rest of Azuta's products do, creating a cycle where Iris continually impresses others and makes a large profit that can be used to modernize Tasmeria.

Improbable Age: Iris becomes the fief lord proxy at age sixteen and starts up a corporation within months of that, becoming one of the most important people in the country within two years. She gets this far mostly because she has a lenient but extremely influential family name to back her claims, an education and work experience far beyond her apparent age, and works herself half to death on all her various projects. Even so, it's rather unlikely that someone her age could become so influential so fast.

Hoist by His Own Petard The Daryl church's attempts to excommunicate Iris on behalf of Edward's faction backfires splendidly resulting in the impeachment and imprisonment of the pope for embezzlement and selling of church property because Iris is able to secure the evidence and testimony of these backdoor dealings, dividing the organization and preparing it to serve as her ally in the future as a friendly and more ethical priest starts gaining power as a result. Following that, Van attempts to weasel into Iris' good graces so he can betray her so that Yuri will hang out with him again. Yes, really. However, Iris saw this totally obvious move coming, prepared accordingly, and executed him afterward for treason.

What the Hell, Hero? | |
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_d39e327f | comment |
What the Hell, Hero?: Yuri's suitors seem to go through these one by one. Iris' family makes it clear they are pissed with her brother Bern after he sided with some random baron's foolish daughter and a wastrel prince over his own hardworking and kind sister. After several years of him failing to see how much he hurt her, he finally realizes what a dick he was and slowly starts being accepted back into the family. Dorsen gets several because the first one doesn't stick. One of the first things to happen in the story is Iris chastising Dorsen for pinning her to the floor after her 'attacks' against Yuri. Iris is no more than a slightly out-of-shape young noblewoman while he's something like a knight in training and, furthermore, Iris has offered no threat of physical violence to Yuri at all. He shrugs this off but a brief twitch shows that he knows she has a point. When he gets home, his father blows up at him for his dishonorable conduct in raising his hand against a woman. Again, he kind of brushes this off, but is now getting kind of confused. His father's anger makes him feel resentful though, so it doesn't have that much effect. Finally, his mother gently takes him aside and explains that after the prince cheated on her, her anger at Yuri was not unjustified. Dorsen also had no evidence that Iris had done anything at all, but went and ruined her life and condemned her to a loveless life of pure work: She would find it almost impossible to marry after being publicly shamed like that. Thinking of all that, Dorsen can't help but remember that Iris was in tears as she left and he's finally forced to accept that he did not handle that situation well at all.

Unintentionally Sympathetic: In-Universe, there's no indication that the world of the game was anywhere near as complex as the story is in reality, indicating that the player was supposed to be pleased when Iris was imprisoned in a monastery. However, the protagonist before becoming her thought 'Wait, isn't that kind of excessive? She's just a kid who said some mean stuff in high school because her fiancee cheated on her and then publicly humiliated her.' When the protagonist becomes Iris and the world is shown to be real, the expulsion scene and the consequences have some notable differences. Most obviously is that most of the onlookers are sympathetic to her when she's driven out.

The Scapegoat: The details are unclear, but it's indicated that what Iris did to Yuri was very small in scope and involved at worst spreading rumors. However, the other nobles that were actually harassing Yuri had made Iris something of a figurehead for the group, so she finds herself taking the fall for them. Being manipulated so easily is actually more the real reason her father almost sent her to the church rather than being expelled because it showed she couldn't hold herself up politically.

Quantity vs. Quality: The Prince Edward faction and the Prince Alfred faction respectively. Prince Edward's faction is very large, encompassing a slim majority of Tasmeria's nobles. However they tend to be corrupt old money families or nobles seeking a weak and pliable ruler to manipulate. Prince Alfred's faction is about half that size but include many self-made men who were ennobled due to merit and various powerful families who have long held the levers of power through monopolization of key positions in the king's Ministries. But once the accountant starts living her life, she realizes that Iris had far more character depth than that, such as her annual tradition of uplifting a random peasant to receive the sort of education and job prospects that they could never have hoped for otherwise, granting her a circle of highly talented and extremely loyal retainers. On the other hand, all the boys in the game, who are the heirs of the movers and shakers of Tasmeria and presumably would have plans on how they intend to move and shake the kingdom once they graduate, rapidly end up being little more than Yuri's sycophantic attendants.

She eventually begins working with him and her servants think this means forgiveness, but she's just using him as a tool and not a particularly trustworthy one at that. After all, he doesn't seem to have learned a thing or even apologized like Bern. And true enough, he turns out to be treacherous, but since she's been keeping an eye on him the whole time the plan fails miserably and he gets sentenced to death for treason.

Would Hit a Girl: Dorsen's family is horrified and saddened by the fact that he was willing to use physical force against a girl, especially when it becomes clear that he had no actual proof she'd done anything wrong.

Face Palm: When Bern, new from his Heel Realization, hears Edward and Yuri discuss inviting the head of Azuta to the castle, he can be seen in the background covering his face with his hand. It's clear that he's realizing that as stupid as they are for not realizing Iris is the head of Azuta that he's just as bad for having to be told so himself.

Locked Away in a Monastery: Iris is almost banished to a monastery at the start of the story for transgressions against the prince and his new girlfriend, but she manages to get out of it by way of a rather cold political analysis of the situation and manages to end up as the temporary fief lord to her family instead.

Faking the Dead: After taking an arrow in the final battle against Tweil, Alfred arranges to be declared dead so his sister can take the throne, recovers in secrecy, and then goes back to Almeria and spends the rest of his life with Iris as Dean.

Heroic Neutral | |
Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter / int_fae64ace | comment |
Heroic Neutral: Iris has no real intention of getting in Edward's way and her family is very firmly neutral. However, Edward (and implicitly Yuri) consider her an enemy and keep trying to bring her down. When she retaliates and neutralizes the threat, she goes back to minding her own business governing her territory. The Duchy of Almeria is the same at large. Like Iris, her family and their vassals have remained studiously neutral in the succession battle. At least until Edward's faction does its level best to antagonise them by constantly attacking Iris, usually through threats towards their Duchy. This makes the entire duchy resent Edward's faction.

The Corrupter: Yuri is turning the people around her into short tempered, wasteful idiots. While it's easy to dismiss it as mere stupidity, it's implied that she's doing it on purpose.
