A novel by David Weber. It's an expanded version of Path of the Fury, which centers on elite drop commando Alicia DeVries' Roaring Rampage of Revenge across the galaxy as she hunts down the pirates who slaughtered her family. She has two key allies, though: a sentient starship named Megaira and an honest-to-gods Greek Fury named Tisiphone, who lives in her head. In Fury Born fleshes out Alicia's past: specifically, her military career from the academy to her induction into the Marine Corps to her getting recruited into the ranks of the Imperial Cadre: the most elite military branch humanity has to offer.Greek gods notwithstanding, this is a fairly hard military science fiction novel, and it incorporates ideas found in Weber's other stories, such as a strong female hero, imperial naval-style combat and vessels similar to his Honor Harrington series, and bioimplants similar to his Heirs of the Empire series. In 2021, Weber started a prequel series about Terrence Murphy and the founding of the Empire during the League and Human/Rish Wars; the first book is titled Governor.

Genre Shift: The omnibus puts the trilogy in chronological order, but the chronologically third book Path of the Fury was published first. The two prequel novels, which fill out Alley's story before she met Tisiphone, are pretty hard military sci-fi, which makes the completely unforeshadowed introduction of a figure from Classical Mythology and shift into Science Fantasy a little jarring.

In Fury Born / int_19d06ef7 | comment |
A Father to His Men: There's a reason why everyone in the Cadre addresses Brigadier Keita as "Uncle Arthur". Rear Admiral Terrence Murphy starts to become this in "Governor" due to bucking the perception that he's merely another Heart World crony out to rule over a Fringe sector just to get his ticket punched for later political ambitions. His actions start to inspire the Fringe-born soldiers and sailors under his command that he genuinely does care about their exploitation at the hands of the rest of the Terran Federation.

Faster-Than-Light Travel
In Fury Born / int_2af7961 | comment |
Faster-Than-Light Travel: The novel uses Fasset Drives — that is, a ship generates an artificial black hole that draws the ship toward it. At the same time, the black hole moves away from the ship since the ship is generating the thing. This leads to unlimited acceleration. When the ship hits 1.0c, something technobabbly happens and the ship enters wormhole space, where it can go much faster than should be possible (to the tune of several thousand times the speed of light). As far as FTL sensors go, gravitic sensors can pick up on gravity wells at speeds much faster than light. Since any ship with FTL capability generates a huge gravity well, it can be picked up at incredible distances with gravitic sensors. This leads to odd events such a ship's gravitic sensors reporting an orbital fortress destroyed while it looks just fine on the viewscreen... only because the viewer is seeing the fortress before its destruction.

Starfish Aliens: The Quarn: Imagine a giant starfish mixed with a giant spider. You're pretty close. Oddly, humans and Quarn get along really well. Humans and Quarns don't like to live in the same planets or environments, so that eliminates a lot of potential conflict areas. And unlike the Rish, humanity can take a joke. Being fully hermaphrodite, the Quarn think sexual dimorphism is a joke. The Rish think it's Serious Business while humans, because the difference between human males and females is fairly minimal and technology (and culture) has made it mostly irrelevant, tend to agree with the Quarn's humorous view.

Curb-Stomp Battle | |
In Fury Born / int_3d699462 | comment |
Curb-Stomp Battle: Alley's fight with the raiders after her family is killed is pretty damn one-sided. She gets home after the attack, activates The Tick, kills several raiders silently with her knife, then uses her fifty-caliber big game rifle to kill more raiders (including their leader as he tries to run), gets several grenade kills (complete with Unflinching Walk), and manages to wipe out all 25 remaining raiders single-handedly while shot several times and bleeding out. It was explicitly mentioned that all those 25 men needed to do to turn the tables on her was get two of their number back to the shuttle, and she exterminated them before they get a chance. And this is before she gets a Bronze Age Eldritch Abomination on her side! The Battle of New Dublin in "Governor". On one side is Dragon Fleet, led by Second Admiral Xing, with twelve FTL Carriers, each with a full compliment of a dozen attached capital ships. On the other is Murphy's ragtag cadre of seven FTL Carriers with barely a third as many attached ships between them. However, it's Dragon Fleet that gets curbstomped thanks to Murphy taking advantage of his opponent's personality to reverse the tide of battle through a carefully-laid trap and kill seven of Xing's carriers and half of their compliment of attached ships.

Sword and Gun: During the nasty Shallingsport battle, Alley engages FALA terrorists (who are wearing Powered Armor) with a pistol in one hand and a force blade in the other after she runs out of ammunition for her battle rifle. She would shoot an enemy in the face with her pistol and while he was stunned, she'd slice him up with the force blade. The FALA armor would stop the bullet, but not the blade.

Badass Family: Alicia DeVries is the granddaughter of one of the most highly decorated marines in Imperial history. The two of them represent the only family unit that has had more than one living holder of the Empire's highest military honor in it at the same time. The villain's field commander would later go on to say that if he had known they'd been living on Mathison's World, he'd have bombed their home from orbit instead of sending in a shuttle of raiders. (And that would have been the right call—despite having numbers, weapons, and surprise on their side, every raider on that shuttle dies. And that's not counting what happened to the villains because that platoon of raiders wasn't able to take Alicia down with them.)

Grey-and-Gray Morality: The Terran Federation and the Terran League during "Governor". The former is an enlightened oligarchy where the Five Hundred, the wealthiest and most politically powerful families, control the core systems, the "Heart Worlds", while exploiting their colonial frontier, the "Fringe", for all that it is worth. The latter is a totalitarian ethnostate where a single party dominates the wills of the people, and any success is considered worthy of propaganda. Both sides have been at war, by the time the novel starts, for over half a century, to the point that the Heart Worlds consider the war economy to be the status quo, and aren't incentivized to push for a lasting victory, despite the billions of casualties on both sides. Both sides also consider kinetic strikes on each other's worlds to be perfectly acceptable, albeit distasteful. And both sides are being secretly manipulated by the Rish, with the Federation economically incentivized through trade while the League is more overtly militarily supported.

Alley is a human being. Alley's mind broke.

Humiliation Conga | |

Humiliation Conga: The moment Second Admiral Xing enters New Dublin space at the climax of "Governor", she suffers from this. First, she detaches her subordinate, Third Admiral Phan, to go attack the habitable planet, preferring to chase down Rear Admiral Terrence Murphy's much smaller force with the bulk of her fleet, so when she runs into the trap he sets for her, all but two of her FTL-capable ships and most of their sublight craft are lost. Then, Phan, able to watch this from across the system, is able to get back to their secret base first, due to having intact ships, but while he first heads away from New Dublin on a false vector before going back to their base, Xing opts to head directly for the secret base, providing Murphy and his allies the ability to backtrack her course to the correct star. Weeks later, Xing arrives back at base with her damaged ships just in time for Murphy to have followed her after taking care of things in New Dublin, and her course has left her trapped inside of the gravity well of the local star, unable to evade Murphy's forces. She demands for Phan to give her his flagship, but Phan refuses, choosing to use the same reasoning that allowed Xing to have her victory at Scotia, that trying to rescue Xing would put his precious ships in peril when she is unable to escape the enemy. Phan then departs the system after making a secret agreement with Murphy to offer Xing on a plate in exchange for the safety of everyone else in-system, knowing Murphy wants Xing to pay for what she did to Inverness. Which leads to Xing attempting to fake her death, and the Hoist By Her Own Petard moment above.

Aristocrats Are Evil: Both averted and played straight: several imperial dukes and senators are awaiting trial for treason at the end of the book, but the Emperor of Man himself seems like a nice enough guy. Though not officially nobility, the Five Hundred families of the Terran Federation play this much more straight in "Governor". Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Happens a few times in any David Weber book, but "Governor" takes the cake. First, as mentioned above, Second Admiral Xing chooses to retreat directly back to her secret naval yard than choose to go back on a false vector first, then change course when no one is looking. This allows for Rear Admiral Murphy to determine where her secret base is by simply following her vector back along to a probable star and doing some math based on travel times. It's even more ironic when her subordinate, Third Admiral Phan, is able to do exactly that, and get back to said base faster than her, thanks to having less damaged forces that don't slow him down, so he has time to prepare for Murphy's counterattack. Secondly, Captain Lipchen, under orders from the leadership of the Terran Federation to arrest Murphy on trumped-up charges for supposed warlordism, decides to do so during a public ceremony being broadcast to the entire New Dublin system rewarding Murphy for saving all of them. And then shoots the system President when he resists. This basically serves as the spark that ignites decades of resentment in the Fringe, and will serve as the inciting incident for the fall of the Terran Federation.

Kinetic Weapons Are Just Better: Capital ships use a combination of energy and physical weapons, but small arms are almost exclusively projectile-based; except for the neural disruptor, that is, which is an instant kill weapon and can stun a target with a near-miss. As Alley's enemies find out the hard way, all Cadre drop-commandos have their brains surrounded with a sort of Faraday cage to negate disruptor effects. There's a reason for this - lasers don't work very well in atmosphere, and can be disrupted by aerosol grenades in vacuum, but bullets work everywhere.
