Koutarou Satomi decided to mark starting high school by living independently, and chose Room 106 at Corona House because the rent and fees were cheap. After a fall at an archaeological dig where he meets a mysterious figure in an underground cavern and wakes up with a concussion, Koutarou discovers Room 106 is now a Weirdness Magnet which has attracted five "invaders": Sanae Higashihongan, the ghost of a former resident who wants the room to herself? Unusual, but at least understandable. Kiriha Kurano, the miko from the underground Earth People who says the room used to be a shrine important to her people and wants to rebuild it (as a foothold for conquering the surface)? Er... Theiamillis Gre Fortorthe, the alien princess who's on a mission to gain the loyalty of the life form in the room, and her assistant Ruthkhania Nye Pardomshiha? ...don't even know where to start. Yurika Nijino, aka "Magical Girl Rainbow Yurika", who says the room is a nexus of mystical energies and must be protected from other magical girls who want to use it for evil? Eh, probably just a cosplayer.Their initial fight over who gets the room gets them smacked down hard by Koutarou's landlady/classmate Shizuka Kasagi, forcing them to live together peacefully while they sort the whole thing out. Over the course of the first arc, the conflict over Room 106 is gradually forgotten as its residents form into a Badass Crew and start pooling their resources in order to tackle the problems which drove them to "invade" in the first place.Invaders of the Rokujouma!? (Rokujyouma no Shinryakusha!?, lit. "Invaders of the Six-Tatami Mat Room!?") is a light novel series written by Takehaya and illustrated by Poco (see the recap page for more details on the story arcs in the novels). It has been localized into English by J-Novel Club, and can be purchased online from Bookwalker. Much of the series (minus some of the illustrations) is also available for free indefinitely on J-Novel's own site, due to being based on a Fan Translation which the translator had released prior to being hired. The series received an Animated Adaptation in summer 2014, which covers the first six volumes over twelve episodes. It can be viewed on Crunchyroll in some regions under the title INVADERS of the ROKUJYOMA!?.The series has received a Web Comic adaptation on Comic Dangan which ran for 30 chapters, along with a companion set of online Short Stories subtitled "Heracles" (which have since been compiled into the books proper). A series of Audio Plays has also been produced, including both side-stories and a Compressed Adaptation of volumes 7.5 and 8.5.

Aliens Speaking English
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_1049848f | comment |
Aliens Speaking English: Or rather Japanese, in the Animated Adaptation. The novels explain that the Forthorthian characters wear translation devices which had been analysing the local tongue for some time beforehand. The inability of Earthlings and Forthorthians to understand each other without such devices (or even for Forthorthians to understand ancient forms of their own language) later becomes a plot point. In the afterword of book 36 (after two years have passed in-story) it's mentioned that the Forthorthians have mostly got the hang of Japanese by now, and rely on their translators only rarely. The people of Folsaria have a magic system that's a Shout-Out to the 3rd edition of Dungeons & Dragons, complete with shouting Gratuitous English spell names. However, it's explained that this is actually a simplified form of an older language where casting spells required a long Magical Incantation. This leads to a Wham Line when both Forthorthian and Folsarian characters identify the same piece of text as being written in an ancient form of their own language. Lampshaded in the afterword of book 36, which explains that the villain of the book was actually speaking Ancient Forthorthian, but that since everyone he interacts with either knows that language or has a translation device, it wasn't worth pausing the action to explain it.

Hero Stage Show: Kotarou helps to put on a Hero Show for Kirha to amuse the neighborhood kids, with Princess Theia and Harumi Sakuraba. Things get a little strange when Kotarou "kidnaps" Harumi (who's totally into it), and a REAL sentai team show up, having come to find and fight Subterraneans just like Kiriha.

Books 9 onwards throw out the "competing through games" gimmick altogether, with everyone agreeing to make Theia the official owner of the room so that she can regrant it to them as the headquarters of the newly-founded "Satomi Knights". By now an experienced and well-knit fighting force, the group begins travelling to the girls' homelands and taking part in large-scale conflicts. Over time, the "kitchen sink" breaks down as the setting is revealed to be more interconnected than it seems, and both the heroes and the villains start combining their skillsets to create powerful Magitek.

INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_13eea985 | comment |
Arbitrary Skepticism: Ghosts, Aliens, and Subterranean Invaders, fine. But Koutarou refuses to believe that Yurika is an actual Magical Girl. Though unlike the other three, Yurika hasn't exactly shown him any proof. That changes when he does see her use her magic. Except at the end of the fight the evil magical girl erases everyone's memories. Afterwards, he does not believe her, but does not disbelieve either. In fact, in the novels he has seen her using magic during Kiriha and Theia's fight in volume one, but it didn't register. Later, he finds out magic is real and even gives her a magical staff that lets anyone use magic saying "now your dream has come true", but still refuses to believe that she was a real magical girl from the start. He admits after finding about the truth the first time (before forgetting) that he does not believe her because he wants to believe that she's her fellow "normal human".

Tempting Fate: Theiamillis claiming no one can get through her barrier after she uses it to stop Koutarou's attack with a baseball bat. Non-hostile example in episode 6. Koutarou tells Theiamillis he has the perfect person in mind for the role of the Silver Princess. When she inquires who he's referring to, Harumi just happens to walk into the room, asking if there was anything she could do to help. The Sun Rangers group at the beginning of episode 10. One of the mentions that while their force was formed to protect from bad guys, another mentions that surely nothing would happen. A man, presumably their leader, then shows up on a monitor and tells them their hated enemies from the Earth Empire is invading the surface, prompting them to jump into action.

Genre Shift | |
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_177a6464 | comment |
Genre Shift: Book 1 is Denser and Wackier than the rest of the series, being a Harem Genre story (or an Affectionate Parody of one) with a Fantasy Kitchen Sink of girls showing up on the protagonist's doorstep and competing against each other to take over his home. By Word of God it was written this way so that the storyline could be ended quickly (in three books) if sales were low. Books 2-7 are Urban Fantasy stories that delve more deeply into the invaders' motives, in which they mellow out greatly and come to see each other not as rivals but as True Companions. At the same time, Foreshadowing is laid that Koutarou has some connection to Forthorthe's legendary Blue Knight. By Word of God, this was designed as a self-contained arc which would be easy to adapt into animation. Appropriately, the anime covers events up to the opening scene of Book 7, leaving out its Cliffhanger ending. Books 7.5, 8 and 8.5 are one long Wham Episode in which Koutarou travels back in time and inadvertently sets up many of the events of the series, while taking several levels in badass along the way. Vancian Magic
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_1f1248fc | comment |
In its modern incarnation, Folsarian magic is heavily modelled on the Vancian Magic from the 3rd edition of Dungeons & Dragons, down to healing magic being classified as a subset of Conjuration, and casters being able to use a form of the Metamagic system by adding phrases like "Modifier: Maximise!" to their spell names. Yurika's greatest strength lying not in direct blasting spells, but Crowd Control Conjuration effects like Deadly Gas, is also reflective of wizards in that system.

INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_20779065 | comment |
Marry Them All: The true purpose of the invader harem is to make Koutarou know and accept all the facets of the Goddess of Dawn who split herself into the nine invaders. In Volume 29, the goddess tells Koutarou that there are infinite versions of him in an infinite number of universes and that out of all of them 5,670,000,000 met her for the second time and made a wish. The difference is that every other Koutarou would wish for a single girl, while this Koutarou is the only one to wish to have all of the invaders. Although, it's Played With in the sense that Koutarou still treats the girls as his True Companions rather than his harem, but he still makes clear he can't imagine his life without any of them and wants to be with all of them for as long as he lives.

Ordinary High-School Student: Kenji, Koutarou's friend, who seem unaware of the things going on around the residents of room 106. Subverted with Koutarou. While he seems like one at first, he also seems to have some powers and capabilities that go beyond what a normal person can do, such as when he rescues Sanae and Yurika from their respective rivals. Subverted with Harumi. For the most part she seems to be a regular high school girl, but then things happen around her that suggests there's more to her than meets the eye, especially in episode 12 when she flat out turns into the Silver Princess and scolds the Blue Knight, aka Koutarou, for poking fun at her. It’s later revealed she’s the reincarnation of Alaia, the Silver Princess that is capable of possessing her temporarly.

Theiamillis was prepared to destroy Earth for the insults she received from Koutarou. Fortunately Ruth tells her if she destroys the planet she'll have failed her mission to have the sentient life at a chosen designation worship her. Which just also happened to coincidentally be Koutarou's room. That said, she does end up using her main ship's weaponry against Maki in episode 9, mostly to punish the latter for hurting Koutarou. She first has her ship fire some Beam Spam shots, then once Maki's magical shield is broken through, she readies a Wave-Motion Gun shot. Fortunately Shizuka shows up and simply punches Maki for wrecking her apartment.

Last, but far from least, the posterior terminus of the Stable Time Loop. Elfaria raises Theia as an extreme Blue Knight fangirl, and hacks her test to send her to Earth. When Theia's Blue Knight play is selected by the Drama Club, and Koutarou is chosen to play the Blue Knight, as part of her "Invader" campaign to capture his loyalty, she loans him her spaceship's control suit - "modeled" on the Blue Knight's armor - and trains him in the ways of Forthorthian knighthood. This prepares Koutarou to defend her from Clan's two attacks, and when he stops the first time-space bomb before it fully detonates, sends him and Clan out of the time stream, initiating the Stable Time Loop, which apparently closes when Koutarou and Clan return to finish the second Blue Knight Play (Volumes 4 and 7; anime Episodes 6 and 7; Episode 12 ends with the start of the 2nd Blue Knight play).

Love Epiphany | |
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_38b33e8d | comment |
Love Epiphany: Sanae develops this around episode 5 after Koutarou brings the other residents to rescue her. Theiamillis begins to feel this way after watching Koutarou act out the role of the Blue Knight in episode 6. While Harumi seems to have an interest in Koutarou, it doesn't really touched on until episode 7, when she can only perform her role in Theiamillis's play if Koutarou is playing the Blue Knight. And in episode 8 she asks Yurika for advice on how to get closer to him after seeing how relaxed and casual he seemed to be with other girls. In episode 9, while Yurika is happy to see Harumi on a date with Koutarou after she told her to ask him out, she wonders why it hurts a little to see them together. In episode 11, Kiriha goes to the amusement park with Koutarou to relive moments from ten years earlier when she went there with a boy she fell in love with. Though she doesn't remember his face or even his name, it's strongly implied that the boy was a younger Koutarou, since she mentions he would be about her age right now. It's actually Koutarou. What she says is that "he was the same age back then as they are right now". The reason is Koutarou travelled back in time for about five minutes (present time), which took him for several months (Koutarou time) to before the origin of the universe, Forthorthe 2,000 years ago (becoming the Blue Knight), 20 years ago (meeting Theia's mom) and 10 years ago (becoming Kiriha's first love). He doesn't remember the first destination, it's under the misconception that he has stolen someone else's role in the case of the Blue Knight (though it’s revealed HE is the Blue Knight), and he wasn't completely sure if Kiriha was Kii-chan (he realizes this first when he gave the card and she scribbled it the same scribbles as Kiriha's card, though he is interrupted when he was about to ask and forgot).

Curb-Stomp Battle: One of these is responsible for setting up the plot, actually. After the six-girl pileup in Koutaru's room almost escalates into all-out war, Shizuka smacks each one of the girls that show up in Koutarou's room for causing a racket and damaging the apartment, and Koutarou as well. None of them seem able to do anything about it, and just end up getting beat up by her including the intangible ghost girl. Shizuka swiftly forces everyone to sign a peace treaty or she'll kill them on the spot. Koutarou and the other girls delivery one to the two men and the ghost lady who kidnaps Sanae in episode 5.

Happens to Kenji, Koutarou's male friend in episode 3. During the beginning of the race, a bunch of students trip and pile up on each other. Koutarou then takes Harumi and steps over them in order to get through. Some of them later catch up to him, trying to figure out who was the guy that stepped on them earlier, with the only reference that he was with a girl. Koutarou is understandably worried, but then they assume it's Kenji because Shizuka is with him, and proceed to rush towards him before they all fall off the balance beam and hit a shock mine laid by Theiamillis. Koutarou escaped in this instance because the girl he was with, Harumi, wasn't even at the course yet with him. That said, Kenji, along with the three guys, all chase after Koutarou after the race is over, and they find out he was the one who stepped on them. After the end credits, both he and Theiamillis (who was beaten up by Shizuka for her mines in the obstacle course) are pixellated blobs slowly crawling towards the other girls, and cause Yurika to also start turning dark like them.

Big Fancy House: Implied for Harumi, as the Cosplay Club mentions that she's staying in her family's second home during Volume 3/Episode 4. Played straight when we finally meet Sanae's family. They have a 500-year old shrine, and the grounds are "as big as a baseball stadium". The living quarters on both the Blue Knight (Theia) and Hazy Moon (Clan) are big enough for several hundred people to live in. Throw It In!: In-universe example during episode 10. While performing as part of the "Harukaze Man" superhero stage show, the title character fails to show up on cue, so Harumi and Koutarou throw in some improvised dialogue to extend the scene a little longer. The Sun Rangers then show up, seemingly to cover for Harukaze Man, but they perform miserably, causing Koutarou to yell at them ("You can't all be the red one! This is a mockery of sentai!"). The actor playing Harukaze Man does eventually arrive, but no one seems to know about the Sun Rangers showing up or who they are. Happens again in episode 11, this time with Ruth interrupting a show where the heroes are derived from rhinoceros beetles. Shizuka is the lead actor, and ends up having to fight her for real in order to prevent her from disrupting the show and affecting her paycheck. Fortunately she's able to subdue Ruth and put on a good, if improvised show.

Playing a Tree | |
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_4ff31e76 | comment |
Playing a Tree: A variation of this occurs in episode 6, when Yurika was originally supposed to play the back half of a horse. She later gets "upgraded" into Villain A instead, though interestingly in episode 7 she's still wearing the horse costume. In the Novels she actually asks to be upgraded to Tree. That's because her horse-rear acting was so good they gave her both roles. A Yurika lookalike (more in spirit than in face) from the original Silver princess story HAD been posing as the Silver Princess's horse (unicorn) to spy on her (this could be related, as she was found because the Princess's entourage was composed of people that reminded Koutarou of his acquintances and the one who reminded him of yurika was the horse). This happens to Yurika again in episode 10. She ends up wondering why she keeps getting put into these roles.

Typically any scene where he's present will be a fairly mundane one aside from unusual things caused by the other girls such as the race in episode 3. Subverted with Harumi. She seems like an Ordinary High-School Student at first, but her interactions with Yurika has caused her to show some magical things happening using her body. Clarke's Third Law: Theiamillis and Ruth are able to detect Kiriha's magically invisible Dogu (the clay figure helpers) with the Blue Knight's technological sensors, which they give technobable explanations of being cloaked. When an attack drone is launched to intercept them, the Dogu comment how a "souless vessel" can't defeat those that possess a spirit, no matter how powerful the lifeless body. The Blue Knight can also analyze and overpower magic girl spells as if they were technological threats. The reason they can is because magicians have existed in Forthorthe in the past, but Alaia made magic be less common due to her fear of it being used again like what Maxfern did. Most of the magic users migrated to somewhere else (implied to be the magical girl world Yurika speaks of); however there still exist magical beasts like dragons, although few in number, so magical spell recognition has been inputted in their weapon's AI just in case they need to fight one.

INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_60194b82 | comment |

Green: Prediction/Information/Illusion. The Ball on Yurika's staff is glowing green as she runs up to the gate of the house where the ghost hunters are holding Sanae in episode 5. Blue: Healing/Summoning. Notice the color of Yurika's initial healing spell on Harumi in Episode 3. Indigo/Navy: Mind Manipulation Violet/Purple: Necromancy. Freeze-Frame Bonus: Several in the anime with Foreshadowing to certain events later on in the Light Novels. Sanae can be seen floating behind Koutarou in episode 1 as he talks to his father. Karama and Korama can be seen flying towards the window in stealth mode as Koutarou joins the Knitting Society. Done as a moment of Foreshadowing, when Koutarou first sees Harumi, the light hits her hair at just the right angle to look like the Silver Princess' color. One of the men who kidnaps Sanae in episode 5 can be spotted briefly in the spectator crowd near the end of the marathon event in episode 3. When Koutarou throws the charm into the ghost lady, it forms a white sword aura. While Yukari was trying to heal Harumi after the latter collapsed, a white aura surrounds and heals them both, while Harumi thinks of a knight who only appears several episodes later. When Theiamillis is reading about the Silver Princess and the Blue Knight at the beginning of episode 6, if you pause it when it shows the image of the two in her book, it looks suspiciously like Koutarou , while the Silver Princess looks a lot like Harumi.

Cannot Spit It Out: Koutaru has a hard time directly expressing how he feels about the women in his life. Sanae, who can read his emotions, calls him on it constantly. Harumi probably goes the longest between recognizing her feelings and actually telling him, followed by Maki and Clan. The rest of the Girls are pretty quick to go from recognition to expression.

Our Ghosts Are Different
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_66479d0 | comment |
Our Ghosts Are Different: Sanae is not a proper ghost, but a residue of the spiritual energy stolen from her body when Maya tried to sacrifice her for her spiritual energy (sometime before the events of Volume 10; this is why her mother Kanae was working with Rainbow Nana). This separation becomes necessary, however, for her to learn how to properly control her God tier spiritual energy. The Ghost Lady (Anime episode 5 and Volumes 3 and 11) is a more proper example of an evil ghost, except for the ability to assimilate other spirits. Dark Purple's necromancy allows her to summon and control ghosts. Kiriha's Mother's spirit is summoned to comfort Kii-chan by Koutarou using Signaltin in Volume 10. Rainbow Nana senses it and hangs a huge lampshade on how rare this is. The ghosts of the soldiers and knights who fell defending Princess Alaia during the first coup d'état in Ancient Forthorthe resurrected by the Blue Knight's presence and the actions of Dark Purple, tear control from Dark Purple and reaffirm their allegiance to Koutarou, leading to the final defeat of Elexis and Darkness Rainbow in Volume 25. After the nine Invaders contracted with Signaltin, this freed the portion of Alaia's soul that had originally powered the sword. After the climactic battle in Volume 26, this remnant of Alaia's spirit visited Koutarou one last time. Then her identity passed into the light, where they could hear Princess Charl and her other contemporaries calling for her to join them, while the remainder of her soul integrated into the portion that had been reincarnated as Harumi.

Because You Were Nice to Me: Koutarou considers Kiriha's request to leave the room, solely because she asked him very nicely. Contrast that to Sanae, who at first tries to spook him out, and when he sleeps through that, she attacks him, hence his resistance to her demand he leave. Only after she reveals the second part of her plan, to conquer Earth, does he then object. Harumi's interactions with Yurika were always helpful and encouraging to the latter, so when the former collapses during the race, she uses her magical powers to heal her.

Unequal Rites: The styles of magic used in Folsaria and in Ancient Forthorthe have something of a Technician Versus Performer relationship. Folsarians simply call out a spell name (and optional modifiers), making their spells faster and easier to use; Forthorthians directly petition spirits to come to their aid through incantations and gestures, making them more flexible. In the side story Blue Knight Reconstruction Project, Clan hands an identical metal block to both types of magic user and asks them to strengthen it - she discovers that the Folsarian-enchanted block has been reinforced evenly, while the Forthorthian one is enhanced mainly along its weakpoints.

INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_857d1626 | comment |
Power Glows: Despite using a prop costume and sword, said gear starts to glow in episode 7 after Koutarou rushes Clan to protect Theiamillis. It even manages to start breaking through Clan's shields. A different sword used by Koutarou in episode 9 also does this. While not emphasized in the anime, Volume 4 reveals that when Koutarou takes over the role of the Blue Knight, Theia lends him the Control Suit of the Blue Knight, which is patterned on her mother's reconstruction of the Blue Knight's historical armor, and which has many functions expected of a space suit. This is originally intended as part of Theia's campaign to convince Koutarou to swear his loyalty and complete her quest. When the stunt sword is destroyed fighting Clan, Theia also loans him her personal sword Saguratin. Of course, this Control Suit, augmented with some of Kiriha's spiritual energy technology, becomes the historical Blue Knight's actual armor when Koutarou and Clan are stuck in Ancient Forthorthe. Subsequent, for values of subsequent, events show that Empress Elfaria's reconstruction was greatly aided by receiving the technical specifications from Clan during their stop in 20-year-ago Forthorthe on the slow road home. This is foreshadowed when Ruth notes that the Control Suit does not require adjustment to fit Koutarou. In Volume 10, Clan realizes that the power glows have been caused by Signaltin, in suspended animation on the outskirts of town, as they wait through their last ten years to return after disappearing in battle in Volume 7.

INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_8a07e085 | comment |
Book 1 is Denser and Wackier than the rest of the series, being a Harem Genre story (or an Affectionate Parody of one) with a Fantasy Kitchen Sink of girls showing up on the protagonist's doorstep and competing against each other to take over his home. By Word of God it was written this way so that the storyline could be ended quickly (in three books) if sales were low.

There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Theiamillis was prepared to destroy Earth for the insults she received from Koutarou.

"Not So Different" Remark: The ghost lady in episode 5 tries to break Sanae's will by stating that humans will betray ghosts, and says she was abandoned by someone. She also tells Sanae that humans don't want ghosts around, hence why they carry charms to ward them off, causing the latter to start thinking back to all the times Koutarou pulled them out on her. Fortunately that's not the case as Koutarou and the others come to rescue her. After Harumi is unable to understand the Silver Princess's role in episode 6, Koutarou helps her rehearse the role. As he does stand-in for the Blue Knight, she begins to understand the Princess's dilemma, connecting it with the knitting club being in danger of getting disbanded until Koutarou joined, and why the Princess didn't want him to sacrifice himself from their enemies so she could escape.

Throw the Dog a Bone | |
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_98576799 | comment |
Throw the Dog a Bone: A few examples: When Kiriha makes food in episode 2, she originally just intended to feed Koutarou, but ends up feeding the other girls as well. Sanae "possesses" him by hugging him from behind in order to taste the food since she can't eat any herself due to being a ghost. Yurika also gets to join in after Koutarou gets sick of seeing her crying and whining. Yurika lost many of the card games played in episode 2, to the point that she was going to be kicked out after losing her territory in the room. Then Koutarou throws her into the cosplay club, thinking it'll be over for her and that she can cosplay outside of his room. Unfortunately for him she somehow gets better at the card games while exhausted due to being forced to spend time with the cosplay club that she ends up winning three games in a row. If one follows the card games scenes (including the opening), they will see that Yurika has a decidedly transparent poker face, all but making her a pushover when it comes to Old Maid. When she is exhausted, however, she is unable to muster enough energy to react to the other players' actions, making her unreadable. Yurika also gets another moment to shine in episode 3 when she attempts to use her magic to heal Harumi after the latter collapses during the race. Though it doesn't work initially, The Power of Friendship kicks in, and it heals both girls, which allows them to reach the finish line before the other students, who are really worn out by that point due to fatigue and Theiamillis's mines.

Status Quo Is God: The occupants of room 106 attempt to claim the share of the room from the others in various events and games. Naturally if someone is too far in the lead, something will happen that will cause them to lose their shares so the person with the least points will then catch up, such as Yurika being dead last in episode 2 to suddenly winning a lot of games in the latter half of the episode and the obstacle course race in episode 3. In episode 9, after being soundly defeated, Maki releases a pre-cast crystal, which causes her to disappear, along with all of the characters seemingly having forgotten everything that happened regarding her. Unfortunately this means they also forgot Yurika is a Magical Girl, and assume she's doing her cosplay thing again. Kiriha states in Episode 11 that she actually needs to keep the current state of nobody winning nor losing the competition over apartment 106 going to give her actual plan time to work. Ruth doesn't take to beetles very well after Koutarou seems more interested in them than her while he was sleeptalking. Consequently any time she's in view of a beetle, or an image of it, she tends to go berserk and tries to destroy them.

He does pick up on that a moment later, releases his hold, and apologizes to her for the misconception. Loophole Abuse: Though they're forbidden from attacking each other, Theiamillis claims her Blue Knight was simply attacking some suspicious objects that were floating around the school grounds in episode 3 when Kiriha asks why her two helpers were attacked by a suspiciously blue alien Attack Drone. A scene then shows the two helpers badly beaten up, but having emerged victorious over the Blue Knight from the earlier battle. The two men who kidnap Sanae in episode 5 try this, asking Koutarou and the others what law they've broken by capturing a ghost. While they're technically correct, it doesn't stop the others from rescuing their friend.

The most meta occurrence: Koutarou and Clan are thrown out of time completely. The awakening Goddess of Dawn saves them from collapsing into the initial singularity, falls for Koutarou, sends them forward to the prior terminus of the stable time loop in Ancient Forthorthe to "wait," then creates the entire multiverse — and the nine Invaders — around Koutarou and Clan, all to allow Koutarou an infinite number of chances to accept her on her own terms (start of Volume 7.5 with information from Volume 29).

In-universe example during episode 10. Ambiguously Absent Parent: The story starts when Koutarou's father is transferred out of town; his mother has been dead for ten years. So has Kiriha's, though she consults her father frequently. Sanae's ghost is stuck in the apartment waiting for her parents to return; she reunites with them in Volume 11. Shizuki's parents have also been dead for several years. Maki's parents may have sold her into slavery, or may have died; nobody knows for sure at this point. Theia, Ruth, and Clan's parents are on Forthorthe, though Theia's mother comes to Earth in Volume 13 and Ruth's father meets them in Forthorthe. Theia, however, was a product of artificial insemination after her father was killed shortly before marrying her mother. Other than the fact that she was born in Japan, Yurika's parents and family situation are never mentioned, since Rainbow Heart took her under their protection to save her from demons attracted to her high mana level. Only Harumi is depicted as having a normal home life, and her parents have never appeared in story (if they even attended the plays, they are not introduced).

Hyper-Competent Sidekick: Korama and Kurama, Kiriha's two little doll helpers(though Kiriha is pretty sharp herself). They often perform a variety of tasks for her, and are quite good at it, such as when they attempt to find where Sanae is in episode 5. Ruth for Theiamillis. She's often the voice of reason for the latter, such as telling her that blowing up the Earth because someone made fun of her breast size would look cause her to fail her test to subjugate the local sentient species. Everyone Is Related: Elfaria theorizes that most of Kisshouharukaze have Ancient Forthorthian blood in them because Maxfern and his people arrived at Japan thousands of years ago and intermingled with the natives, which is supported by Maki stating that there are far more children born with abundant mana in Kisshouharukaze than other areas. Meaning: every "real" Earthlings (Koutarou, Harumi, Sanae, and Shizuka), could biologically also have alien blood in them. The opposite could also be true, as Clan rewrote the genes of Forthorthians 2000 years ago, with the basis being her -a modern-day Forthothian- and Koutarou's -a modern day human- genes.

Shout-Out | |
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_c75df49a | comment |
Shout-Out: In its modern incarnation, Folsarian magic is heavily modelled on the Vancian Magic from the 3rd edition of Dungeons & Dragons, down to healing magic being classified as a subset of Conjuration, and casters being able to use a form of the Metamagic system by adding phrases like "Modifier: Maximise!" to their spell names. Yurika's greatest strength lying not in direct blasting spells, but Crowd Control Conjuration effects like Deadly Gas, is also reflective of wizards in that system. The upgrade module which Theia creates for Koutarou's armour in book 15, "Garb of Lord", takes its name from the "Garb of Lords", a Prestige Class-exclusive Armor of Invincibility from the Wizardry series. Theia is a noted fan of old videogames, and had been seen spending many hours on a dungeon-crawler RPG in a previous book. In the Animated Adaptation, one of the item Shizuka brings to the inn in Episode 4 is a shortened version of Tensa Zangetsu. When Koutarou starts swinging it around, Sanae asks if he's trying to make her pass on.

Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: How Koutarou seems to have powerful fighting skills, and a lot of the things that happen around Harumi when the non-normal everyday stuff starts happening such as her channeling power after fainting in episode 3, which Yurika unknowingly utilizes to help heal her, or when she manages to give Koutarou a weapon in their fight against Maki. It seems that Harumi is the avatar of the Goddess of Dawn, a conscience that precedes the universe and has knitted it from scratch. The Silver Princess was also an avatar and Harumi's former incarnation.

Hoist by His Own Petard | |
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_d397657d | comment |
Hoist by His Own Petard: Koutarou probably had malicious intents into tricking Yurika into joining the cosplay club at school in episode 2. Unfortunately said club takes up so much of her time that she's really exhausted when she gets home, and somehow ends up winning several of the card games in a row. Had he not of done that along with Status Quo Is God, she probably would have lost the remainder of her shares of the room and been kicked out. Theiamillis has her men place some shock mines around the balance beam obstacle course in episode 3 in an effort to slow down everyone else. It works initially, until some of the groups that were behind see that she's not having any trouble on her balance beam, so they naturally choose the same one. They then knock her down into one of the mines in their rush to catch up. Kiriha says this trope almost word for word in episode 7 after her two helpers grab the device Clan was using to cause Theiamillis's weapons to self-destruct after she summoned them, and instead has her weapons explode when she summons hers to attack Koutarou with.

What the Hell, Hero?: Sanae essentially asks this when she tries to pop up on Koutarou and Kiriha while they are alone on the beach in episode 4. Unfortunately for her, he was wearing his charms, which shocks her and causes her to run away. Later that morning he tries to clear up the misunderstanding but she runs off thinking he hates her. While Yurika normally gets upset when no one believes she's a Magical Girl, in episode 8, she calls out Koutarou on this when he invites Maki, her rival, to the room. She gets really angry that they still won't believe her, and on top of that, are throwing a party for her enemy while believing both girls are simply cosplayers.

Red Herring: The Sun Rangers are warned that the Earth Empire is invading at the start of episode 10. However, they don't see anything out of the ordinary when they do go out. And at the end of episode 10, they're warned of an attack again, this time with a much stronger urgency than the last time, indicating an Earth Empire attack on the town was imminent. Then a large submarine is shown, with several idols similarly shaped to Kiriha's helpers sitting in some of the chairs in the command deck, with a People of the Earth Rebel Faction leader captaining the sub. While not shown in the anime, in the novel the Sun Rangers sortie again and are curbstomped by the Rebel Fraction before the Rebels engage with Koutarou and the Invaders.

Contrived Coincidence: Every girl in the series aside from Shizuka and Harumi wants Koutarou's room for herself for various reasons. Other than Sanae stating she's been living there longer than him, every other girl's explanation sounds rather outlandish to Koutarou. Theiamillis' situation is even lampshaded in the novel. The coordinates are chosen at random from throughout the entire galaxy. This is the very first time in the Empire's history that the chosen spot wasn't empty space, much less being Koutarou's room, in Japan, on Earth, etc... It turns out that there is a reason for that.

The Scapegoat: Happens to Kenji, Koutarou's male friend in episode 3.

Ruth for Theiamillis. She's often the voice of reason for the latter, such as telling her that blowing up the Earth because someone made fun of her breast size would look cause her to fail her test to subjugate the local sentient species. She also does a lot of things to assist Theia and the others up in combat.

Suspiciously Specific Denial: In episode 6, after finding out Yurika brought a pet beetle home, the other residents panic at what might happen if Ruth, who doesn't like them after Koutarou seemed more interested in them than her, would do if she saw it. Ruth then comes back into the room having forgotten something, and Yurika nearly says they're not hiding a beetle before Koutarou closes the closet.

Humongous Mecha: Theia's battleship the Blue Knight is one. It can be used by Koutarou as a mecha when used together with the Blue Knight armor Funnily enough, Elfaria, Theia's mother and the one who created the battleship, based it on Koutarou mentioning giant mechas controlled by people (since he's a Sentai fan), which itself, despite Forthorthe's advanced technology, was weirdly never touched upon.

You Already Changed the Past
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOUMA!? / int_e9e2c54d | comment |
You Already Changed the Past: Happens six times during the Stable Time Loop The most meta occurrence: Koutarou and Clan are thrown out of time completely. As Clan discovers during the incident of the "poisoned" water supply, both she and Koutarou had to be present in the past to create the Legend of the Blue Knight (conclusion of Volume 7.5). The use of Clan's second space-time weapon exiled the Coup d'etat leadership to Earth 10,000 years in the past, and the rebelling magicians to Folsaria 700 years in the past, creating both the People of the Earth, by intermarriage with the human population, and the Magical Kingdom (conclusion of Volume 8.5 with final recognition of the consequences in Volume 19; the time frames are discussed in Volumes 36-38. Returning to Forthorthe twenty years before the Invasion, Koutarou and Clan met Elle, aka Empress-to-be Elfaria, Theia's mother. Clan gave her the plans and data from Koutarou's battle suit, and Koutarou gave her the idea for Mecha, leading to the construction both of the Blue Knight's legendary armor and Theia's starship. Koutarou and Clan also saved Elle from assassins sent by the forming modern Coup d'etat forces. By unintentionally giving her advance knowledge that she would have a daughter, they may also have inspired her to use her fiance's frozen sperm after his death to give birth to Theia (last story in Volume 14). Arriving on Earth 10 years before the Invasion, Koutarou rescues Kii-chan/Kiriha from assassination by Maya and the Rebel faction, which possibly also prevents Maya making a second attempt to capture and sacrifice Sanae as well (Volume 10).

Big Damn Heroes: Used a couple of times in the show: Subverted with Yurika in episode 5. She notices Sanae in trouble and attempts to help her, but is carried away by the cosplay club members who just happen to find her there. She does help out indirectly later after escaping them. Played straight with the other characters who go to rescue Sanae from the kidnappers. Koutarou and the others help Theiamillis fight off Clan in episode 7. Yurika once again saves the day, albeit indirectly again this time by falling on top of Clan, who had escaped to a nearby room. As she attempted to plan her next attack, Yurika, who was hiding from Ruth with the cosplay club president's rhinoceros beetle, falls on top of her after getting tired while hiding. Koutarou does this for Yurika in episode 8 while the latter is fighting Maki. Then the other girls do this for him and Yurika in episode 9 while fighting by the apartment they live in. Befiting his role as The Paragon and Knight in Shining Armor Koutarou gets to do these fairly regularly. The Legend of The Blue Knight Starts with one of these.

Martial Pacifist: A major portion of the legend of The Silver Princess and The Blue Knight was the care they took in avoiding casualties during the civil war against the forces of the coup d'etat because, no matter which side the solders were on, they were all subjects of the Princess and her responsibility. While Kiriha is trying very hard to accomplish the invasion of the surface by the People of the Earth with out a shot fired, she is perfectly capable of applying the beat down when the situation calls for it.

Running Gag: No one believes Yurika is a Magical Girl for a long time. Koutarou finally starts to believe it at the end of episode 9 despite Maki taking his recent memories of their fight earlier. He still vaguely remembers Yurika getting hurt protecting Harumi however, hence why he believes her. Koutarou tends to move around a lot in his sleep, often ending up in front of the portal to the Blue Knight where he gets stepped on buy Ruth and Theia. Ruth any time rhinoceros beetles are brought up, due to Koutarou being more interested in catching them despite being on top of her while acting out a dream in episode 4. Kenji suffers a fly swatter to the head in the previews at the end of episode 9 for it. And Ruth nearly ruins a sentai show since the main characters are derived from rhinoceros beetles.
