A film or other literary work where a sequel is released long, long after the original work. May sometimes be a Trilogy Creep, very often related to Development Hell. More common in games, particularly online games, as they can have a much longer life than other forms of non-interactive media, which are "finished" as soon as you reach the end of them. StarCraft II, for example, came out 12 years after the original StarCraft because the original remained massively popular for a long, long time after its release. Doesn't apply to sequels In Name Only, Sequel Series or Franchise Reboots. This trope is for honest-to-goodness sequels, prequels, and midquels. See also Capcom Sequel Stagnation, and a related Webcomic trope, Schedule Slip. Can overlap with Cliffhanger Wall if the last entry ended on a cliffhanger, but audiences only get a prequel or interquel after a long release gap. If the time passed in real life is reflected in the story, see Real-Time Timeskip. Not to be confused with Distant Sequel, which is when a significant gap in time exists between a work and its sequel in-universe. Note: In order to qualify as this trope, the sequel in question must have been released no less than five years after the previous installment. |

25 years passed between the release of their final studio album Let It Be (1970) and the release of their first "new" song from the Anthology project, "Free As A Bird" (1995). This is because of John Lennon's death in 1980, with the song being a Lennon demo that received additional work from the then three surviving Beatles.

Clone High: The first season aired from 2002 to 2003 before being cancelled. The second season aired in 2023 (owing to renewed online interest in the Cult Classic). Metallica has fallen into this for their most recent albums. It first happened with the five year gap between Metallica and Load and ReLoad. Then there was a six year gap between ReLoad and St. Anger. Their next album Death Magnetic (2008) took five years to come out. If one discounts their Lou Reed collaboration Lulu (2012) (most fans definitely prefer to), their next album Hardwired... to Self-Destruct came out 8 years later in 2016. The follow-up to that, 72 Seasons, similarly took seven years to come out, releasing in 2023.

Samurai Jack: The fourth season ended in 2004. The fifth and final season wouldn't be produced and aired until 2017, making for a twelve-and-a-half year wait in the meantime. This may have been in part due to the creator spending most of the time desiring to produce the final arc of the show as a theatrical film before deciding that ending it on television would be a better route, as the creator jumped between multiple TV and film projects with the hope of eventually doing that final season as a movie. If you take the non-canon IDW comic book series that ran from 2013 to 2015 into account, you have a nine year gap between new Samurai Jack stories. |

David Byrne: Discounting the collaborative albums Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (2008) and Love This Giant (2012), American Utopia (2018) ended a fourteen-year gap since his previous solo album, Grown Backwards (2004). Counting collaborative albums, Byrne saw an eight-year gap between the releases of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (1981) and Rei Momo (1989), owed to him prioritizing work with Talking Heads for most of the '80s. Furthermore, the gap between Love This Giant (2012) and American Utopia (2018) spanned six years. Focusing solely on collaborative albums, the Byrne & Brian Eno duumvirate saw a 27-year gap between My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (1981) and Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (2008). |

As far as strictly animation goes, there's a five-year gap between the end of the original series (ended 1985) and The New Adventures of He-Man (1990), which doesn't even reach the full five years if one counts She-Ra: Princess of Power (ended 1986); counting other adaptations, the gap is otherwise filled with the live-action Masters of the Universe (1987).

There was a six-year gap between the releases of Never Let Me Down (1987) and Black Tie White Noise (1993), owed to Bowie eschewing solo material during the turn of the '90s in favor of working with Tin Machine as a means of artistically reinvigorating himselfnote Tin Machine (1989) was legally considered a Bowie album under his contract with EMI, but its status as a full-band project means that it's typically excluded from the man's solo discography.

David Sylvian: Discounting collaborations and other side projects, Dead Bees on a Cake (1999) was his first studio album since Secrets of the Beehive (1987) 12 years prior. There's a Light That Enters Houses with No Other House in Sight (2014) released five years after its predecessor, Manafon (2009), owed to Sylvian retreating further and further from the public eye as he grew older. Tellingly, Sylvian hasn't put out another album since this one came out. |

An example about songs: "Larks Tongues in Aspic" had Parts 1 and 2 included on the titular album (1973). After that, you have "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part 3" from Three of a Perfect Pair (1984) — an 11-year gap. After that is Part 4 from The ConstruKction of Light (2000) for a 16-year gap. Curiously, "Level Five" from 2003's The Power to Believe makes for the shortest gap in the series, at just three years. note However, an early version of the song was included on a limited-run EP of the same name (Level Five) in 2001, about a year and a half after ConstruKction.

Roger Waters saw a five-year gap between Radio K.A.O.S. (1987) and Amused to Death (1992). Barring side projects, that was then followed up twenty-five years later with Is This the Life We Really Want? (2017), owed to Waters focusing more on his live act. In turn, The Dark Side of the Moon Redux (2023) came out six years after that album.

Matt Wagner's Mage trilogy, consisting of three fifteen-issue miniseries, Mage: The Hero Discovered, Mage: The Hero Defined, and Mage: The Hero Denied. The first miniseries was published in 1984-6, the second in 1997-9, and the third began in 2017. The gap between the first two was partly due to rights disputes between Wagner and the original publisher, but the second gap was purely due to artistic reasons.

Daughters as a rule tended to take a very long time to record new albums. Their first two albums, Canada Songs and Hell Songs, were released in 2003 and 2006 respectively, a gap of three years. After this, their Self-Titled Album dropped in 2010, a further gap of four years. An odd example involving a The Lord of the Rings prequel taking place in an Alternate Continuity. In the late '90, New Line Cinema acquired their rights to adapt The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, with the books being adapted in two trilogies, the first airing in the early 2000, and the other one a decade later. Tolkien Estate was not happy with Jackson's adaptations, and would take them around 2 decades to allow another adaptation of Middle-Earth to be created. In 2017, Amazon acquired the rights to adapt the Second Age, which led to the creation of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (with New Line Cinema being again involved), which aired a decade later after the Hobbit trilogy.

Star Trek Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969) was followed by Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994) nearly 18 years later. In between those two series was Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973-1974), although 13 years would pass between the end of TAS and the premiere of TNG. Star Trek: Discovery (2017) comes 12 years after the end of the last Star Trek series Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005), and 48 years after the end of Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-1969), to which it is a prequel. Star Trek: Picard debuted in 2020, nearly 26 years note May 1994 — Jan. 2020 after Star Trek: The Next Generation ended and just over 17 years note Dec. 2002 — Jan. 2020 after the eponymous character was last seen in Star Trek: Nemesis. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, debuted in 2022, in addition to being a spin-off of Discovery, spotlights the characters from the original, long-unaired Pilot Episode of The Original Series, for an unprecedented 58-year gestation. |

G-Saviour took 6 and a half years (and 70 in-universe years) to follow Mobile Suit Victory Gundam. Another, even bigger gap is between Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack and its direct sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, which takes place three years later but had its first episode launch about 18 years after CCA. A six-year gap between A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons (2011). Doctor Who: The original series ended in 1989, and the TV movie that followed it up aired in 1996, 7 years later. The official revival began in 2005, 9 years after the TV movie and 16 years after the original show's conclusion. For an episode-specific example, "Twice Upon a Time" (2017) is an interquel to "The Tenth Planet" (1966). |

City Hunter's last major animated work in the 90s was the movie City Hunter: Death of the Vicious Ryo Saeba in 1999. The next major work directly based on the franchise would be City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes in 2019 — 20 years. Could also count as one for Cat's Eye due to the Kisugi sisters appearing in it. They haven't been seen in animation since 1985, meaning a 34 years gap. |

The Twilight Saga: Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined (2015), a Gender Flipped version of the series, was the first full-length novel after Breaking Dawn (2008). It's also five years since the release of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, the first new narrative in the series since the tetralogy ended. Life and Death was in turn followed by Midnight Sun, a P.O.V. Sequel told from Edward Cullen's perspective, which was published five years later (2020). Stephenie Meyer originally wanted to release it shortly after Breaking Dawn, but had a Creator Breakdown when its draft was leaked online and decided to put it on hold for over a decade. |

Masters of the Universe: As far as strictly animation goes, there's a five-year gap between the end of the original series (ended 1985) and The New Adventures of He-Man (1990), which doesn't even reach the full five years if one counts She-Ra: Princess of Power (ended 1986); counting other adaptations, the gap is otherwise filled with the live-action Masters of the Universe (1987). The New Adventures of He-Man to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2002) — 12 years. The 2002 series to She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018) — 16 years. The 2002 series to Masters of the Universe: Revelation / He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2021) — 19 years, in regards to an installment that stars He-Man. However, Revelation is also considered a followup to a Broad Strokes version of the 1983 series, meaning a gap of 36 years. |

Similarly to Jean-Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield tends to release albums fairly frequently, but his true sequel albums see long gaps between one another: Tubular Bells (1973) was followed up by Tubular Bells II (1992) 19 years later, and that was followed up with Tubular Bells III (1998) six years later. Ommadawn (1975) saw its first loose sequel in the form of Amarok (1990) 15 years later, and Return to Ommadawn (2017) came out 27 years after that. |

Lupin III Between the original manga series (1967-1969) and the World's Most Wanted manga series (1977-1981) — 8 years. There were also additional chapters called Lupin III New Adventures in 1971, though that still leaves 6 years between them and World's Most Wanted. Lupin III: Part 1 (1971-1972) and Lupin III: Part II (1977-1980) — 5 years. Lupin III: Part III (1984-85) and Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine (2012) — 27 year prequel gap. The franchise was still pretty active in that time with the Lupin III Yearly Specials, but there hadn't been a dedicated TV series then. If we count only the main TV series (since The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is both a spinoff and a prequel), then it's Lupin III: Part III (1984-1985) to Lupin III: The Italian Adventure (2015) — 30 years. In terms of the theatrical films, The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) and Legend of the Gold of Babylon (1985) — 6 years. Also in terms of the theatrical films, Legend of the Gold of Babylon (1985) and Farewell to Nostradamus (1995) — 10 years. The Fuma Conspiracy had a theatrical release, but that was originally made as an OVA. For a more oddly specific example, we have the Green Jacket episode The Man They Called The Magician (1971) and the OVA Return of the Magician (2002) — 31 years. The former involves the magician Pycal's introduction, while the latter has him trying to get revenge for what happened in the former. Speaking of the OVAs, The Fuma Conspiracy (1987) and Return of the Magician — 15 years. The OVAs would be followed by another gap, with Return of the Magician (2002) and Green vs. Red (2008) — 6 years. |

Cobra Kai came out in 2018, 34 years after the first The Karate Kid movie (1984). While there were sequels to the original film, as well as a reboot, the show specifically focuses on the rivalry between Daniel and Johnny 34 years after the tournament. Even taking the intervening films into account, it still applies as it comes 8 years after the reboot (2010), 24 years after the last original continuity film The Next Karate Kid (1994) and 29 years since the last appearance of Daniel and the Cobra Kai storyline in The Karate Kid Part III (1989), which itself saw a sequel gap of 5 years until the next installment.
