Gravity Rush 2 (Gravity Daze 2 in Japan) is an Action RPG Wide-Open Sandbox video game and sequel to the critically-acclaimed Killer App Gravity Rush developed by SIE Japan Studio and Project Siren and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. It was set to released on December 2, 2016, but due to some anticipated triple-A games set to be released at that time, it was officially released on January 18-20, 2017 instead. The game continues the story of Kat, the cheerfully amnesiac gravity-shifting heroine from the first game, in a new city with a very distinct and different culture, after being stranded in a nomad settlement due to being caught up in the pull of a massive gravity storm. Joining her for her adventures are Syd, her underachieving police friend, and Raven, the rival shifter from the first game, now a close ally, as well as a cast of new characters from this unexplored sky. As she searches for a way back home to Hekseville, she meanwhile has to deal with threats to the peaceful lives of her friends, both from the Nevi, which ever assail the lives of everyone, and from the corruption that mires the ruling class of the city of Jirga Para Lhao. It also features the answers to several mysteries that remained unsolved in the first game, most prominently being the true identity of just who Kat is and what her role is in the grand scheme of things. An anime created by Studio Khara, called Gravity Rush Overture, was released late 2016. It tells the story that takes place between Gravity Rush and Gravity Rush 2.Just like the original, Gravity Rush 2 received critical acclaim, with most critics agreeing that it's even better than/just like the original. Now has a character sheet.

Say My Name: At the climax of his final Big Damn Heroes moment in the second game, with all of Hekseville singing Discovery of Gravitation around him, Syd softly says Kat’s name before he sends his army of Nevi to help her. At the very end of the game Raven turns towards the camera and says Kat’s name with reacting adorably relieved, letting the audience know that she’s back.

Gravity Rush 2 (Video Game) / int_225d8ff9 | comment |
Ambiguously Human: The Angels. Winged and endowed with superhuman abilities, they are actually more extraordinary than Kat and Raven by virtue of not needing another character to supply them with their powers. Kali's dialogue implies this transformation is due to an "angel seed" given to them by Brahman, and she soon proves that they can quite easily leave the "human" part out if they really want to. The people of Eto, by the admission of a Senator, are rather long-lived. Although we only see a handful of individuals, the same Senator, who looks around his 60s, said he was around as a boy for Queen Alua to bounce on her knee. One hundred years ago. Syd for much of the second game. After his death on the Bismalia you only ever see him possessing machines until the final battle where he is revived by Bit. First the buggy Grigo that saves Kat, then as a slightly altered-looking Alias, who turns out to have been a robot.

Bittersweet Ending: Kat defeats the Darkness and saves Hekesville, fulfilling Alua's wish to help the people below Eto at the cost of herself. However, the epilogue upgrades this to Earn Your Happy Ending with Kat's return. Played straight with the ending of the Raven's Choice DLC. Raven finally saves Zaza and the children inside the Ark by ensuring the bus accident never occurred and fixing time and space. Zaza and the other kids from the bus lived happy, normal lives decades before the events of the main game, and eventually a new brother and sister named Zaza and Sachya were born (the grandchildren of Raven's brother). But Raven had to give up her entire past, to the point the original Zaza never even had a sister, and Raven only remembers being a child alone on the streets before she met her guardian Xii.

Stance System | |
Gravity Rush 2 (Video Game) / int_44e013e4 | comment |
Stance System: By swiping on the touch pad/touch screen, Kat can move between her normal style to two new Gravity styles: Lunar Style and Jupiter Style. Lunar Style: Activated by swiping upwards. Kat's gravity is lightened, allowing her to move in leaps and bounds and attack with floaty kicks. Jumping performs a Spring Jump that has extremely high vertical distance, and pressing the jump button and a direction simultaneously allows her to perform long jumps that cover great horizontal distances. The Gravity Kick becomes a homing attack that teleports to a desired target, then allows Kat to assault it with light kicks via Button Mashing. Her stasis field projectiles also become minor storms on impact that trap targets for a brief window of time. Lastly, her special move in the style is based on the stalactite special from the first game, albeit with the ammo determined by the surrounding objects in the area. Interesting to note, due to the decreased weight, her fall speed during shifting is actually less than her Normal style, but has more freedom of movement. Jupiter Style: Activated by swiping downwards. Kat's gravity is strengthened, reducing her movement speed and jump height and allowing her to attack with slow, but powerful punches and palm strikes. The Gravity Kick becomes a Charged Attack that has incredible damage when fully charged and enables the attack to strike in a radius when attacking grounded targets. Her stasis field in this mode changes to congregate her collected projectiles into a single large boulder for greater impact. Her special move while in this style is the same as the micro black hole from the the first game. In an inverse the Lunar Style, the enhanced weight causes her fall speed during shifting to actually increase and is faster than Lunar or Normal Style, but is also much harder to control. Normal Style: The default style and can be switched back to by tapping the touch pad. It operates pretty much the same as how Kat did in the previous game. In this style, her special move is the Spiral Claw.

Charged Attack: Jupiter Style exchanges the regular Gravity Kick for the Surge Kick, which can be charged by holding the Square button. Hitting maximum charge then releasing unleashes an extremely powerful kick that additionally deals Area of Effect damage if the target is a solid, flat surface. The attack can still be performed before hitting max charge, but the effect will be substantially weaker. This is naturally the go-to move for wiping mobs of grounded enemies or breaking bunches of ore. In the very same chapter that this move is obtained, a version of the move were Raven pitches in with her own lesser version of the Surge Kick is made available to use any time Raven is with the player.

Kick Chick: Kat, as usual. However, swapping to Jupiter Style causes Kat to instead attack with her fists and hands, probably due to her legs being too heavy to properly kick with them when grounded. Raven clearly has less issues with hand strikes, but her attacks are still mainly kicks as well. Differing from Kat, her version of the Gravity Kick actually deals multiple kicks in sequence, rather than a single powerful one.

Gravity Rush 2 (Video Game) / int_5fcedca | comment |
Big Eater: A new character quirk for both shifters. Kat and Raven eat so much (presumably for all the energy consumed for shifting all the time) that other characters worry that their eating expenses alone will bankrupt Banga Settlement. Between Kat and Raven, Raven is apparently the bigger glutton. According to Kat, she eats ten times as much as Kat does. This not even going into how several of the photo gestures are of Kat pulling a snack from nowhere and stuffing it down then and there.

Gravity Rush 2 (Video Game) / int_6439de78 | comment |
Heroic Sacrifice: Several instances of this occur in the game: In the mission to save Syd and Cecie from the Council, Vogo rams his airship into the Bismalia to stop it from destroying the Banga mining ship, succeeding while sacrificing himself in the process. It's ultimately subverted as he turns out to have survived, having jumped out at the last moment. Played straight in the final chapters of the game. Gade and Cyanea each sacrifice themselves in order to assist Kat in the final battle, Bit sacrifices himself to revive Syd one last time, and Kat herself becomes a singularity at the bottom of the world in order to seal away the sea of darkness. However, The Stinger reveals that Kat comes back one year after her sacrifice. Syd performs three heroic sacrifices during the game. 100 years ago in Eto, Syd tried to save Kat/Alua from an assassination attempt by Xicero, only to get stabbed in the back and killed in the process. Syd also stayed on the Bismalia while Kat and Raven entered the possessed Neu Hiraleon so that he could fire the main guns and open a path for them. Later on in the level, you see the ghost city devour the Bismalia, resulting in Syd dying a second time. Finally, while possessing a robotic Alias body, Syd puts himself between Xicero and Wolp, which destroys the robot Alias body. He manages to come back every time though.

Gravity Rush 2 (Video Game) / int_8774fb47 | comment |
Eldritch Abomination: The Nevi are back, and in new grotesque forms to boot. The Lost City—a Nevi-fied Neu Hiraleon—is a truly Giant Flyer that creates gravity storms to swallow whole islands in seconds in order to assimilate their matter to make itself bigger. It has huge tentacled cores everywhere that spew poison, and in the very center of the thing (keep in mind that basically the whole thing is alive) is a large, out-of-control reactor that looks like a human skull hooked up to large tubes pumping it full of purple liquid. The Darkness, essentially a nigh-unstoppable avatar of destruction and negativity. It possesses Cai and his guardian and then transforms into what can only be called a demon, through and through: a gigantic winged beast with a head that seems a fusion between a dragon and a stag, with multiple regenerating eyes everywhere, and the ability to steal all of Kat's powers bit by bit while No Selling practically everything our heroes can throw at it. And this thing's endgame was the obliteration of everything!

Gravity Rush 2 (Video Game) / int_8797239c | comment |
Bait-and-Switch: One of the side missions involves Kat delivering a bunch of cargo for Vogo whose contents are classified. The reactions from the receivers lead Kat (and the player) to believe that they're smuggling illegal drugs, and when Raven finds Kat and demands the boxes, even going so far as to attack Kat for the boxes. Kat thinks Raven has an addiction problem. They way Raven rather bluntly confirms it doesn't help. Nope! Turns out at the end that it's just an extremely rare and extremely delicious non-illegal cake, and Raven's "addiction" was merely her appetite acting up. Again. Another side mission has Kat delivering a box with contents so foul that everyone runs away screaming their heads off in terror just by going near them. Kat herself has to take constant breaks for fresh air or she will pass out and plummet to her doom. When she finally gets the box to the intended recipient, the terrible contents are revealed to be...his mother's pickles. Yet another side mission (rather, a chain of them) have Kat being offered roles in the show biz, with promises of stardom. In all but one, what she is actually doing is working as a double for the REAL star. And when she does get what she was actually promised in that one mission, a Nevi attack prompts the leading director to step down, with the assistant director stepping up and promptly dismissing Kat in favor of another, seasoned actor (presumably the same person Kat has been working as a double for). Ouch.

Whenever you have AI allies (more than just Raven), they will often target the same enemy you are attacking in order to reduce their numbers faster. This is especially helpful when you're getting mobbed, as this game entirely averts Mook Chivalry. And in select cases, they will instead spread out and take on multiple targets (specially prominent in the Mutated Kali battle). AI Allies also tend to be quite efficient at dealing with mobile targets (case in point, it is entirely possible for Raven to take out the Lost City all by herself while the player is struggling with the battle conditions).

Big Bad: One per chapter of the game: In the prologue, this "villain" is Sun Shipping President Vogo, who tries to cheat Banga Settlement out of their honest work. After eating some Humble Pie, he more or less befriends Kat and the others, although that doesn't stop him from setting them up for the Council to save his own skin. He does redeem himself later though. For the first chapter, the Council fulfills this position. They pull the strings behind the Garrison, and have the support of the people of Lei Havina, which harbors all the rich people, as they benefit from the way things are run. They are directly and indirectly responsible for the Perpetual Poverty of the people of Lei Elgona, and have no qualms about treating them like disposable assets. Although they eventually lose their power due to the Lhao Revolution, they evade all comeuppance for their actions by holing themselves up in an impregnable fortress. At least until the Lost City crashes their party. Literally. For the second chapter, Dr. Brahman is this. Initially presented as a Reasonable Authority Figure, he is actually using his position and resources to conduct highly dubious operations with the purpose of freezing all of Hekseville in time in a vain attempt to rejoin with his petrified daughter. His deeds include murder, framing others for murder, human experimentation and the kidnapping of orphans for said experimentsnote The same Missing Orphans Case depicted in Overture., and leaving for a stroll during works hours. Perhaps as an acknowledgement of the visibility of his deeds, he actually dies on-screen, and painfully at that. For the last chapter, King Cai, who plans to destroy the world and remake it into a better world, as he sees it, and plans to do so by setting loose a powerful, crazed spirit to do the erasing for him. Then when his plan is foiled, he is usurped by The Darkness, which is the actual villain who planted the idea into his head in the first place, as well as the ultimate evil behind the series, and proceeds to possess him and his guardian in order to take physical form in the world and continue the devastation.

Continuity Nod: Kat and Dusty's Panthera Awesome combined form from the very end of the first game returns, and it's shown that Raven has one of her own. Moreover, these return as their Super Modes, and late-game battles often have them entering it first in order to deliver even more epic finishing moves. Permet returns as an Ascended Extra from a DLC of the first game, with Kat recognizing them, making at least the military DLC canon. The red gem that D'Nelica is seen with during the epilogue of the first game is heavily implied to be the recorded message made by Queen Alua to the dwellers beneath Eto.

Evolving Attack: Most of Kat's moves can be empowered with Gems, as in the previous game. This includes extending her normal combo, the number of times she can dodge in a row, increasing the inherent properties of her styles' special throws and special attacks, and so on. Suffice to say that comparing a fully powered-up Kat with starter Kat is like comparing a panther with a kitten.

Ape Shall Never Kill Ape: Averted, unlike the first game; this game is not shy about showing the lengths the Council, their lackeys and beneficiaries will go for their own gain, up to and including mass murder of people occupying space they want to use. There are plenty of battles against human foes and their vehicles, and while the standing rule seems to be the Non-Lethal K.O., nothing is stopping you from picking soldiers up with a Stasis Field and throwing them into the abyss.

Additionally, Kat can equip a max of three Talismans at a time, one per Talisman shape, and each shape corresponds to one of her styles. This is not to say that only one is in effect at a time depending on the Style you're currently using, but rather that a number of abilities are style-specific and only drop naturally in that shape. The only way to get those abilities in a different shape (in order to stack it more than 3 times) is to get multiple copies of talismans with the same abilities in order to turn them into a single talisman of a different shape with that same ability set, rotating from Sphere to Crescent to Triangle to Sphere (or Normal, Lunar, Jupiter and Normal styles). This can involve copious amounts of Item Farming to transfer abilities two shapes over, but the results can often be rather extraordinary. Example For example, stacking the Driver ability (which increases the travel distance of Lunar Style's long jumps) about 7 or 8 times results in long jumps that cover several hundred meters horizontally and several dozen or even hundred meters vertically, essentially obsoleting the need to perform a gravity shift except to travel to places where there is not enough matter to jump from.

Artificial Brilliance
Gravity Rush 2 (Video Game) / int_df11acbe | comment |
Artificial Brilliance: Several examples. If Raven is an AI ally, starting a Gravity Kick within proximity will cause Raven to join Kat for a Combination Attack. After obtaining Jupiter Style and watching the relevant tutorial, if you charge up a Surge Kick whenever Raven isn't preoccupied with something else, she will zoom to your side and begin charging up her own (weaker) version of the Surge Kick for a double dose of explosive brutality. And if you use the Spiraling Claw, Raven will join in with her own to amp the damage of the attack. If a boss enemy has a grab attack, chances are your ally will jump in to interrupt them before they can throw you. This is even a scripted event during the fight with Mutated Kali. Enemy example: The Dual Boss with Kali and Durga automatically change fighting styles on the fly to account for whether the former is grounded or up in the air.

Rivals Team Up: Kat and Raven are friends now, and often team-up on missions together. The ending of the Raven's Choice DLC shows that history has been rewritten between the games, such that the bus full of children that fell to Botoume never fell. RPG Elements: The new Talisman system allows the player to strengthen or tweak Kat's powers by equipping Talismans with different ability sets. These can do things ranging from increasing Kat's basic statistics to augmenting how her moves work, such as increasing the travel distance or homing properties of her Gravity Kicks or the number of items she can pick up with a Stasis Field. Some Talismans can be obtained by completing Sidequests and other in-game achievements, but generally the best way to exploit the system is by making custom Talismans from individual pieces collected from Gravity Mines. Each Talisman can hold at most 3 abilities, and as long as the ability doesn't state otherwise you can stack multiple copies of the same ability to compound the effect. Most of the best abilities cannot be obtained until the Bonus Dungeon becomes accessible, however, so a player is more likely to be using the pre-made Talismans for most of the game. Darkest Hour: The final battle, which goes From Bad to Worse for the heroes. Kat, traversing the final vision of the game to put together the last pieces of her broken memory, cannot defend Hekseville from the rampaging Elektricitie. She learns that she, queen of Eto, was exiled in a coup, and Syd died trying to save her. In her place, Raven puts up a vicious but hopeless fight to protect the city alone, and is overwhelmed and defeated, cast down from the sky. Yunica, Permet, and Lisa all arrive to help, but each fails to do any lasting damage. Kat, thanks to the Creators pulling a Heroic Sacrifice (despite knowing it will mean their own erasure), is able to finish the job and take out Elektricitie after a pitched battle... but the true Big Bad, Darkness, is able to manifest by warping King Cai's Guardian into an avatar. Kat struggles through a Hopeless Boss Fight against an enemy that constantly regenerates its power while ritually weakening Kat's. Even the arrival of Cecie/Durga, who reveals that she can now control her powers and jumps in to help, encasing Darkness in crystal, is not enough to turn the tide, and the angel is swatted aside. Beaten, Kat then takes a Breaking Speech from the beast itself, encouraging her to stay down and accept what's to come; she won't even remember this encounter, she'll live forever in unknowing bliss, if only she submits...

Item Crafting: Although the game offers some pre-made Talismans (a number of them with unique abilities that cannot be obtained in any other way), the best Talismans are almost universally player-made sets that involve hunting for individual pieces in Gravity Mines and then taking them to Aki's place to mix-and-match them into finished pieces with the desired ability loadout.
