Insurgency: Sandstorm is the sequel to New World Interactive's 2014 game Insurgency. Unlike its previous Source engine incarnations, Sandstorm is built on the Unreal Engine 4 for the PC as well as the PS4 and Xbox One consoles. Aside from updated graphics and different game engine, it will also feature an eSports framework and had initially touted a single-player/co-op campaign before NWI announced that it was being indefinitely delayed in favor of prioritizing work on the multiplayer gameplay. It was released on PC on December 12, 2018, with console ports released on September 29, 2021.

One Bullet Left
Insurgency: Sandstorm (Video Game) / int_122e956a
comment
When a closed-bolt firearm doesn't have a magazine but still has a round in the chamber, players can use that round to save their skin if interrupted during a tactical reload, which is true to real lifenote provided the weapon doesn't have a safety lock that prevents it from firing without a magazine. This feature was shown off in the pre-release of the game, using a pistol with no magazine. However, fans with a keen eye were quick to point out one flaw: when the bullet was fired, the pistol's slide locked back. This would be impossible because the magazine contains the bolt-hold open device which allows the firearm to lock back its bolt or slide when empty. Without a magazine in the weapon, the bolt should come forward, and the next time the player wants to reload, they'll need to manually charge the weapon. NWI was quick to fix this issue for pistols, now requiring the player to fully rack the slide to chamber a new round. Unfortunately, other weapons such as the M16 and Mk 17 still erroneously have their bolts lock back with no magazine loaded, since they weren't pointed out by the community at the time.

Standard Hollywood Strafing Procedure: The Security autocannon strafe drops a line of death perpendicular to where the commander is facing. The A-10's 30mm cannon is shown in its full destructive potential: exploding vehicles, penetrating buildings, destroying caches and messily mangling anyone caught in the line of fire, leaving behind a row of craters similar to those produced by rockets.

Death from Above: With radio options given to the Officer via an Observer, several types of air or artillery support can be called in to assist his team... or give the enemy team a really bad time. For example; The Security Team's Blackhawk helicopter support hovers around the area spewing fire and hatred to any enemy targets but can be easily countered with a well-aimed RPG-7 round, while the Insurgents prefer using homemade quad-copters to deliver all kinds of payloads to their intended targets.

Good Guns, Bad Guns
Insurgency: Sandstorm (Video Game) / int_25afd4a3
comment
Good Guns, Bad Guns: Like the previous game, the arsenals are split between fancier modern Western weapons for Security and older, generally Soviet castoffs for the Insurgents, though with far more outliers than before. The most noticeable is that the cutoff date for "old enough to have been abandoned by the West" has been pushed up to The '90s: the Insurgents now have exclusive access to several Western weapons, like the Beretta 92, FN P90 and FAMAS; much more modern post-Soviet Russian and Chinese weapons like the AS Val, a heavily-modified AK-104, and the QBZ-97 and -03; and several direct counterparts to other weapons Security has held onto, like the M16A2 and MP5A2. There are also a few cases where the Insurgents have access to a more modern weapon than Security's equivalent, like the aforementioned Beretta 92 (Security instead gets an Iraqi copy of the older M1951) and the Galil ACE (Security still uses the older SAR). There are also several other guns split between the sides based more on media reputation than actual usage, e.g. Security getting an MR 73 revolver while Insurgents get a Desert Eagle, though some also zig-zag this, like Security giving up the FAL (once the poster-boy for Western weapons, though by now only in use by irregulars who can't get their hands on anything newer) but replacing it with the G3 (which has generally always been used as a bad-guy gun). The game includes a different set of WWII weapons, which play around with this in their own way - Insurgents get more of them (the Hi-Power, Welrod and M1 Garand, versus Security just getting the M3 Grease Gun), but they also generally get more options for more modern attachments (the Grease Gun can only get foregrips specifically when using its "Advanced Suppressor" to add an underbarrel rail, the Welrod and Garand get options of sights, bipods and the like). Of course, several of the other new guns play the original idea straight - among the other new Insurgent weapons are old Uzis, PKMs and MG3s, while several of Security's removed weapons were replaced with much more modern ones, like the MP7, Vector, VHS-2 and MDR.

Bilingual Bonus: Unlike the previous Insurgency games, the Insurgents and even some of the Security forces now mostly speak in unsubtitled Arabic dialects, although the latter are more prone to mixing their conversations with English commands. Insurgents with the 'Mercenary' voice set also sometimes shout in Russian, suggesting they represent Chechen fighters or Russian military advisers Explanation Truth in Television of course, since the start of The War on Terror, sympathizing veterans of the two Chechen conflicts have offered their services to their Middle Eastern brethren.

Awesome, but Impractical
Insurgency: Sandstorm (Video Game) / int_2bdae2ae
comment
Awesome, but Impractical: The M1 Garand's rifle grenades, although YMMV. The ability to launch smoke or explosive rounds at a distance is very useful, especially for the Marksman, since their other weapons cannot do this. The only issue is that, unlike the underbarrel grenade launchers in the game, the Garand's rifle grenades take forever to switch to; first the user ejects the weapon's clip, loads in their own blank-firing cartridges, and then puts the grenade on the muzzle. The same steps must be done in reverse when switching back to the rifle, and hilariously enough, the grenade magically reappears to be removed even if it was fired. That being said, this long swapping animation can actually be bypassed by switching to the rifle grenade, then switching to a different weapon, although it doesn't work all the time.

You Have Researched Breathing: The QTS-11 assault rifle added in the 2021 Chinese New Year update features an integrated grenade launcher, which isn't usable unless supply points are used to equip grenades. Armor Is Useless: Played with. Armor only protects what it covers on the character model, note helmets are purely cosmetic adds a significant amount of weight, note affects time to Aim Down Sight and movement speed and will typically only let a character out in the open survive an extra hit or two at medium to long range from 5.56 NATO or similar rifle rounds and possibly another one or two for pistols and shotguns at longer ranges. However it does become more useful when protecting against bullets penetrating walls and explosions. Light or No armor is what the Developers were balancing around, with Heavy Armor filling a niche, defensive role.

Universal Ammunition: Justified. You can scavenge ammunition from dropped weapons that use the same caliber and magazine, such as 5.56 STANAGs. The magazine models even remain the same when inserted into your weapon; for example, if you take a magazine from someone's Mk 18 (which in the game is loaded with PMAGs by default), to put into your M4 (which uses steel STANAG magazines), you now have an M4 loaded with a PMAG—a unique configuration you could not obtain from the game's loadout menu.

Jumping on a Grenade: Lying prone on a grenade will reduce the damage done to nearby teammates. This is because explosives in the game are modelled realistically with individual bits of shrapnel; by lying on the grenade, your player model absorbs all the flying bits of death while saving your teammates. Of course, you'd be hard pressed to find a player actually willing to do this most of the time.

Asymmetric Multiplayer: The two competing factions have drastically different weapon selection and fire support options. Security use a variety of American and NATO weapons (M4A1, M16A4 and SCAR-H as such), while Insurgents use primarily Russian and Chinese weapons (AKM, AKS-74U and QBZ-97 as such) along with pieces of outdated Western arms (M1 Garand, M16A2, FAL and Sterling). Security has access to helicopters and strafing runs, while Insurgents can call in artillery or even chemical gas attacks. This situation is somewhat balanced due to the fact that Insurgents' equipment is slightly cheaper.

Arbitrary Gun Power: Averted for the most part like its predecessor. Weapons that use the same cartridge usually perform the same. However, some interesting balance decisions had to be made: The VHS-2 has less velocity and penetration than the M4A1, despite having a longer barrel. This is probably to balance its high fire rate. The AS VAL does around the same damage as 9mm submachine guns despite the VAL's 9x39mm being more akin to a larger-bore intermediate rifle cartridge rather than one used by a pistol.

Cosmetically Different Sides: A minor example, but certain weapons have one-to-one equivalents on the opposing side. For example, each faction has their own M1911 variant (The classic version for the Insurgents, and the modern M45 for the Security), their own M16 variant (Insurgents get the A2 while the Security has the A4, though the M4A1 and Mk 18 are Security-exclusive), their own Galil variant (ARM for Insurgents and SAR for Security), and their own MP5 variant (A5 for Security, A2 for Insurgents). Each of the listed weapons function and perform identically to their OpFor counterparts but with two exceptions: The M16A2 has fewer optical options than its more modern A4 counterpart on the Security side, while the MP5A2 has the S-E-F trigger group (as opposed to the A5's 3-round burst group) and doesn't have access to a large-capacity drum magazine that is available to the A5 in certain game modes, or get transformed into the MP5SD front end when a suppressor is equipped. Some weapons also have functional equivalents on the opposite side, such as the M110 and the SVD being semi-auto snipers with 10 round magazines, the M82A1CQ and the M99 .50 cal rifles, and the AUG and the AKM as hard-hitting, 600 rpm assault rifles.

Hollywood Silencer: Averted. Adding suppressors to your gun only reduces the sound enough to confuse the enemy of where the shot is coming from, especially from a distance. Suppressors have the added benefit of eliminating muzzle flash entirely, and unlike other games, has no penalty to the damage or ballistic capabilities of your weapon. Justified with the Welrod. Its integrated suppressor, bolt-action operation, and subsonic ammo makes it very quiet.

BFG: The M82A1CQ and the M99 are .50 cal anti-material rifles that tear off limbs and send their targets flying. While they can be fired from the shoulder, their immense recoil make it best to use the bipod. The newly-added KS-23 shotgun is the most powerful shotgun in the game with its 23mm shells. However, shotguns in the game are usually a 1-hit kill close to medium range anyway, so it's rarely seen on the battlefield.

Misidentified Weapons

Misidentified Weapons: There's currently a bug in the game that gives some of the grenade launchers incorrect names: The Type 91 QLG-91B grenade launcher, featured on the QBZ-97 is known as the GP-25, which is the launcher that the AK rifles use. The QTS-11's integrated launcher is known as the M7, which is the name of the rifle-grenade adapter featured on the M1 Garand. The Steyr GL 40 and HK AG36 note launchers for the AUG A3 and G36K, respectively are both incorrectly known as the M320. This is curious, considering the proper M320 does not appear in-game at all. It's likely that the AG36 was at first misidentified as the M320 as they are both side-break launchers developed by Heckler & Koch, and then when the AUG A3 was released, its launcher had the M320 moniker as a placeholder which never got removed. The newly added M60E4 is actually based on the E6 variant. Similarly, the RPK-203 just uses a generic RPK receiver with an older dovetail mount design, and while it sports the 203's black furniture, the stock is depicted as fixed rather than folding. The names have since been simplified to "M60" and "RPK"

Guns Do Not Work That Way
Insurgency: Sandstorm (Video Game) / int_95ff52c7
comment
Guns Do Not Work That Way: Averted for the most part, with some exceptions: The MR 73 revolver is somehow able to equip a suppressor, which wouldn't be very effective due to its cylinder gap allowing gasses to escape. The MR 73 is also able to be reloaded while in single-action mode; this would also be impossible as cocking the hammer locks the cylinder in place, which would not allow it to swing out. The fast reload for the AUG has the operator clutch the cheek rest with their thumb pressed against the bolt release. This somehow causes the magazine to be dropped. The Welrod in the game is based on the Mk II model, which is chambered in .32 ACP, despite the game saying it is chambered for 9x19mm, which would be the Mk I. The SKS's bolt locks back on the last shot. This would be correct for an SKS that uses an internal magazine, or a purpose-built aftermarket detachable magazine. However, the SKS in-game is based on a Chinese version that feeds from AK magazines, which do not have built-in bolt-hold-open devices. As such, it would be impossible for the bolt to lock back. The PKM is depicted as having a disintegrating belt, and also having a 100 round capacity instead of 100+1note although the PKM is an open-bolt firearm, internally it has a claw mechanism that grabs rimmed cartridges from its belt, so the next cartridge that is ready to fire is actually stored inside the weapon, independent of the belt. As such, the PKM's ammunition system should work similar to the closed-bolt weapons in the game, although it would still have the trigger delay of the other open-bolt machine guns. Honestly? We'll give it a pass considering there are zero other games that depict the PKM's belt or mechanism 100% correctly.

Anti-Frustration Feature: Smoke and chemical mortars used to kill any player unlucky enough to have a shell land on them directly, as would be the case if you were to be hit in the head by a cylinder of metal 81 millimeters wide. This feature seems to have been removed, though, and commanders can safely shell positions that have lots of friendlies in them (this is still an ill advised tactic, however, since it will just obscure their vision while the opposition can wait outside and pick them off as they stumble their way out of the smoke cloud).

All-or-Nothing Reloads: Averted with the staged reloading system. For example, you've fired a few shots from your weapon before removing the magazine for a reload, but you're forced to transition to your backup to fight off a threat. When you switch back to your first gun, it won't have a magazine and if it's a closed-bolt gun with a round still chambered, you can fire it off before loading the new mag in. Also, by default, all magazines (regardless of whether or not they have ammo left) are retained on reloads. Reloads can be sped up by dropping the mag on reload, but of course you lose that magazine and whatever ammo was left in it.

A.K.A.-47: Mostly averted, but a few examples play with this trope: The SIG P226 is called the L106A1, which is its designation in the UK Military. The Barrett M107CQ is known instead as the M82A1 CQ, which is half-correct since the M107 is the U.S. designation for an M82A1 with some modifications. The PF-940 is an interesting example: It was the name of an aftermarket frame kit for Glock 17, but in this game it's used as the name of the gun itself. Curiously, the weapon was known as the "M005" in the beta (likely a reference to the M007, the USMC's designation for the Glock 19M) and also sported the Glock 17's proper frame instead of an aftermarket one. However, this version was removed from launch and later replaced by the PF-940 we have today, presumably for legal reasons. The VHS-2's launcher, the VHS-BG is simply known as the VHS-2-GL.

Taking You with Me: A limited time co-op gamemode for Summer 2022 involved AI enemies dropping live grenades when killed, similar to Modern Warfare's martyrdom perk. The only way to prevent this was to kill the enemy with a headshot. Even then, it would be really difficult to tell whether or not an enemy dropped a grenade; unlike most FPS games, there's no HUD to tell you where grenades are dropped, and the grenades could often be hidden under the enemy's ragdoll body. Considering many of the objectives require close quarters combat, one can imagine how challenging this gamemode was.

Bomb Disposal: The Livewire update adds a Defusal mode to multiplayer. Security Forces must defend two objectives from Insurgents who attempt to plant bombs on them. Once the bombs are armed, Security must defuse the bomb before they explode. Unlike other defusal gamemodes in video games like Counter-Strike or Rainbow Six Siege, defusing the bomb does not guarantee a win for the Security Forces; instead, Insurgents and Security can plant and defuse as many times as they want for the 5-minute duration of the game, and anybody on the Insurgent's side can plant the bomb. The game timer resets back to 5 minutes when an objective is destroyed. Whichever team destroyed the most objectives gets the victory, and it is possible for the entire game to result in a draw.

comment
Break Out the Museum Piece: Both the Security and Insurgent sides have access to outdated and obsolete weaponry. Security has the Tariq pistol (an Iraqi copy of the Beretta M1951). The Insurgency, as usual, gets the usual Warsaw Pact firearms such as the Makarov, AKM, SKS and Mosin-Nagant. They also get a few outdated NATO pieces such as the M16A2 and FN FAL. The Nightfall update adds the Grease Gun to Security and the Sterling SMG and the Welrod to the Insurgents. The Cold Blood update adds the M1 Garand for the Insurgents.

Artistic License – Explosives: Shooting a brick of C4 will cause it to detonate. In reality, C4 designed to be rated against gunfire and only detonatable via blasting cap. This was likely done to balance it with the Insurgent's equivalent IED, which, crudely made from artillery shells, probably will explode after being shot.

Action Bomb: Insurgents with Suicide Vests are encountered as enemies in Security Co-Op mode. It takes roughly 2 seconds for the bomb to detonate which is preceded by a obnoxiously loud cellphone beeping noise warning players of impending doom, but they can be disarmed by killing them before the vest explodes.

Malevolent Masked Men: Nearly all of the Insurgent head cosmetics cover the face and head with scarfs, masks, or balaclavas. Security also has access to balaclavas and neck gaiters, but those tend to show more skin. Both sides can invoke this with gas masks as well.

Concealment Equals Cover: Averted, as thin pieces of wall or cover are easily pierced by most rifle rounds. However, concrete blocks and other substantial objects can provide safety from bullets. Weapons have penetration properties dependent on caliber, velocity, and distance from target.

Attack Drone: The Insurgents have unique fire support in the form of quadcopter drones laden with explosives. One version involves a fleet of them flying overhead and literally rain grenades over the target area and another sends an IED drone that can fly into windows and detonate point blank. Quick trigger fingers will enable you to shoot them down before they drop their payloads.

Theme Naming: The Security air support callsigns are named after typical fantasy role-playing classes; 'Warlock' is the A10 pilot, 'Cleric' being the Blackhawk with mounted minigun and 'Assassin' being an Apache gunship with rockets.

Every Bullet is a Tracer: Averted. Bullets are invisible to the naked eye, as they should. However, one may choose to equip red or green tracers (depending on the side) which are very visible. Additionally, all machine guns are equipped with tracer rounds by default, to prevent someone from camping across the map and gunning people down without them knowing where they are. The tracers also work as an effective form of suppression, deterring enemies from running towards an objective if they see a hailstorm of colored projectiles coming their way. Tracers also become more frequent when the user is about to run out of ammunition in their magazine.
