Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS, often stylized Friday Night Funkin' THE MUSICAL (not to be confused with Random Encounters's work) is a series of Friday Night Funkin' covers created by Tom Hart Jr. (better known as RecD) that depict lyrics and sometimes entirely new stories to the original game. Every character is portrayed according to canon, for the most part, but sometimes Hidden Depths arise in these lyrical re-imaginings.The playlist can be found here.

Kinder and Cleaner: Downplayed. Most of the more mature themes have been removed or altered, but the humor and charm in the original game is still here. Most notably, Senpai's Freudian Threat before "Roses" is changed to "But keep it up and the things I'll do to you aren't going to be very E for Everyone", and Mommy Mearest's song names are never mentioned. Tankman makes sure he can complain about it at every occasion he gets.

Afraid of Their Own Strength: This turns out to be the real reason Whitty is laying low. Every time he goes Ballistic, he overheats and explodes with enough intensity to, in his own words, "turn this place into the Grand Canyon". He is terrified of hurting innocents again, but Girlfriend's parents only care about how good a singer he is, disregarding the devastation that follows in his wake.

The Cameo | |
Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS (Web Animation) / int_1b65dfad | comment |
The Cameo: Outside of Friday Night Funkin' the mods covered, there are a few characters either mentioned or shown that are either not from the source game or haven't had their mods given lyrics/vocals by RecD. In South and Monster With Lyrics, Boyfriend and Girlfriend are saved from Monster by the Eyes of the Universe. In Mommy Must Murder With Lyrics, Boyfriend is taking Girlfriend out to eat at Nene's Sushi and Sides, implying that Nene now runs a successful sushi business. In Hex With Lyrics, Hex mentions during RAM that he met Tricky on his travels while passing through Nevada. In Whitty With Lyrics, as Whitty is about to "blow it" again, Carol steps in to defuse Whitty. A minor one: During Release in Garcello with Lyrics, one can see posters of both Tankman and Matt, suggesting that Matt does exist in this universe. In the beginning of the Daddy Dearest remaster, we see a band consisting of the Dummied Out character Lucky Boy, a Distaff Counterpart to Lucky Boy said to be his girlfriend, and Clowfoe, the creator of the Vs. Impostor mod. In Unloaded With Lyrics, when it's revealed that Pico was telling the events of the song as a story to kids as community service, the kids in question are Ski, Baby Blue Brother and Bandu.

Ambiguous Situation: Did Daddy Dearest's cursed pencil actually create Bob, or did it simply transport BF and GF to Bob's realm? Boyfriend thinks it's the former considering Bob looks identical to Boyfriend's OC rival "Boyfiend", while Bob claims it's the latter, which is likely given that Bob knows all about his canon backstory and the ARG coveing it. The episode never confirms it one way or the other though.

Adapted Out: The Mid-Fight Masses episode doesn't feature a cover of "Casanova", with Selever and Rasazy not even being alluded to. Subverted as Selever later received his own solo episode, though like with Mid-Fight Masses itself, it's not canon to the series. In the Week 5 episode, the dismantled Girlfriend head on top of the Christmas tree never appears during "Winter Horrorland". The "Bob and Ron" episode doesn't feature "Trouble", "Onslaught", or any of the Little Man songs, the last of which having the character arguing that Boyfriend and Girlfriend should fight him before getting squished.

Motive Rant: Most modded characters often reveal quite a bit about themselves through their songs, explaining quite a bit about what they're doing. Whitty's main source of lore comes from "Overhead", with him explaining what his relationship with Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest is, why he's in hiding and why he quit singing. Hex, meanwhile, has "R.A.M.", which brings up his main philosophy in life, as well as his previous encounters. Garcello has two songs like this. "Nerves" has him explain how he got addicted to his cigarettes, and "Release" instead brings up how important Annie is to him.

Speaking Simlish: Averted. Boyfriend speaks full English, and any of his beep and bop dialogue is often used to stand in for sick burns, which don't always work. Whitty calls him out on it. Played straight during Twinsomnia WITH LYRICS, where BF doesn't speak in English as usual. This is explained by Monster (as the Boogeyman) giving him nightmares about his high-pitched electronic voice, which discourages him from talking normally.

Boyfriend is still his usual loveable, competitive, Fearless Fool self, but depending on his opponent, it's clear he Took a Level in Kindness as well as Took a Level in Badass, whether it ranges from giving sound advice to Pico duing "Blammed" to counter-threatening to cook and eat the Monster in "Monster". He's also a lot more expressive about his dreams of becoming a musician, as well as his ultimate goal of becoming more than just a boyfriend to Girlfriend. He's also much more expressive of his considerateness towards Girlfriend's parents, even to the point where Mommy Mearest calls him a bit of a killjoy.

Eviler than Thou: In Week 5, Monster easily turns Mommy Mearest and Daddy Dearest into food abominations and uses them to capture Girlfriend and eat her; combined with the more sympathetic and rounded portrayals of Girlfriend's parents, this makes him appear especially heinous and dangerous. Even after the food abominations are revealed to be illusions, leaving if Monster is actually stronger than the two ambiguous, the point is still clearly made. In "Too Slow", Sonic.exe plans to cross into Boyfriend's world after he kills him and kill Girlfriend's parents. He also considers Girlfriend to be "a lesser demon" compared to him.

The Dearests, however, covered up the incident, got Whitty a record deal and made him perform the same song again, even though he didn't want to. The same thing happened, and Whitty went on the run. Boyfriend, however, questions whether Daddy and Mommy really had no regard for Whitty's well-being, or whether they simply wanted him to be the best he could be. This takes on a much darker tone when it turns out that "blew it" is a Deadly Euphemism for a literal explosion that likely claimed lives. Apparently, this happens every time Whitty goes Ballistic.

Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS (Web Animation) / int_63b02752 | comment |
As mentioned above, Whitty used to be a nobody along with Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest, and used to be a close friend of theirs before exploding twice due to his Hair-Trigger Temper, leading him to run off and go into hiding. He comes off more as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold in this interpretation, especially with his lines about not wanting to take Boyfriend or Girlfriend's life; the former because it would make Girlfriend sad and the latter because it would make her parents sad, and his interactions with Carol when she steps in to stop him from blowing up. In addition, Carol acts a lot more serious and protective of both Whitty and Boyfriend (to the point of outright calling Boyfriend out for picking on Whitty), compared to her chilled out, casual, and slightly vulgar attitude in her respective mod. She and Girlfriend also don't acknowledge each other in her cutscene despite being best friends in Carol's canon, but this was possibly just an oversight by the creators, considering they probably wanted to focus more on the relationship between Carol and Whitty.

Face–Monster Turn: In the Christmas special, Monster transforms the other opponents prior to Week 6 into food-themed abominations just like him. They even receive food mutations to their names. He sings "Winter Horrorland" in order to buy time to fully control them. Daddy Durian Mommy Melon Peaco Skidney Bean and Pump... is simply just Evil Pump, due to him already being named after a pumpkin.

You No Take Candle: Ruv talks like this, given that English is his second language and he's not very good at speaking it. This results in neither him or the alternate Ruv being able to sing each other's versions of "Zavodila" well, as the alternate Ruv has a good grasp on English, meaning FNFWL Ruv is a few syllables behind and JS Ruv is a few syllables ahead.

Adaptation Personality Change
Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS (Web Animation) / int_6fbe85e6 | comment |
Adaptation Personality Change: And how. Every character is as close to canon as possible, but RecD has gone as far as to add Hidden Depths or new ideas for directions the characters could end up going. Examples include: Boyfriend is still his usual loveable, competitive, Fearless Fool self, but depending on his opponent, it's clear he Took a Level in Kindness as well as Took a Level in Badass, whether it ranges from giving sound advice to Pico duing "Blammed" to counter-threatening to cook and eat the Monster in "Monster". Girlfriend still clearly loves Boyfriend, but is also not afraid to show signs of being a bit of a Deadpan Snarker to her significant other. She's also shown to express consideration towards other characters, such as wanting to respect Whitty's privacy. She's still a bit of a Brainless Beauty (subverted in later videos where she is implied to have ulterior motives), especially in Week 6, where she admits that Hating Simulator traps people inside of it right after Boyfriend boots it up. Beyond Week 7 With Lyrics, she seems to become a voice of reason for Boyfriend, and even displays a bit of badassery herself later on. Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest seem to warm up to Boyfriend throughout their respective videos; however, it's clear that Boyfriend gets along better with Mommy Mearest (despite her threatening to drag Boyfriend to Hell if he doesn't achieve his dreams), considering that Girlfriend's father taunts them when they get trapped in the game and threatens Boyfriend when he's out a single minute past ten PM after he fights the virus taking over Hex. "Whitty FULL WEEK WITH LYRICS" reveals that the two weren't always as successful as they later came to be, and used to be good friends with Whitty until Whitty refused to sing with them since he didn't want to go ballistic any further, and Boyfriend points out the possibility of them being Not Evil, Just Misunderstood to Whitty...which is fully confirmed in the Date Week episode where they are indeed happy to see him, but don't want him exploding anymore since they are homeowners, and more importantly parents now. Smoke 'Em Out Struggle with Lyrics unfortunately seems to avert this, at least for Daddy Dearest. Daddy Dearest's remaster paints a different picture of him, where he implies despite his long-running discography, Girlfriend is really his only true fan in a Morality Pet sort of way. He feels excited when it seems to him at first that The Boyfriend, whom he's led to believe is a big fan of his music, wants to help him come out of retirement, and subsequently feels crushed when he learns the Boyfriend wasn't a true fan at all. Skid and Pump are implied to be babysat by Girlfriend, resulting in their respective rap battles. In South and Monster with Lyrics, they take the couple to a spooky house for "a spooky meal" which their friend the Monster invited them to. They're also friends with the Eyes of the Universe in this series, and come back with their friend to distract the Monster when he's about ready to eat Boyfriend alive. In Pico & Blammed WITH LYRICS, Pico doesn't mention being a hired hitman working for Dearest at all and instead offers to "save Boyfriend's bacon, or cook it" if he can't keep up with his rap when the two of them find themselves lost in the city — though the remaster of Week 3 brings that detail back into the spotlight and even before that, he comes in to save BF and GF from the Tankmen as in canon. His lyrics are rife with Newgrounds references and shoutouts (fittingly), and he primarily sings about not wanting to soften up like he feels Boyfriend did, and would rather go down being true to himself than change. As an added bonus, while Darnell has yet to be mentioned or make a cameo, Nene, one of Pico's friends, is implied to have a popular sushi restaurant in her name. Monsternote referred to as "Mr. Lemon" by the Spooky Duo is first seen with a rather cheerful and friendlier look... at first, before slipping into his usual ways. Some of the lyrics to his self-referential song are altered, note "Kill the kid" being changed to "Prep the meal," and "I'm gonna tear your eyes out" being changed to "Your eyes will join the others" but the rest of the song still carries its originally sinister vibe. Turns out even he's not immune to witnessing the cosmic horror that is the Eyes of the Universe. Senpai is relatively the same besides a change to one of his in-game linesnote His Freudian Threat towards Boyfriend was changed into "But keep it up, and the things I'll do to you aren't going to be very “E for Everyoneâ€." but his irritation suddenly turns to desperation once The Boyfriend points out that his disc will eventually rot away. This also highly implies that Senpai is ''self-aware'' that's he's in a video game. Spirit still wants to carry out their plan of escaping the game by leaving in Boyfriend or Girlfriend's body, but Boyfriend convinces him to let him go with the promise that he'll try to get him out of there, giving Spirit some lines of supportive dialogue as the couple depart from the Hating Simulator world. Hex is the same old friendly face as usual, where his week ranges from bonding with Boyfriend about the similarities of basketball and music, talking about his experiences with other people, and offering The Boyfriend advice on making friends. Hex in this series is not only implied to have met Whitty (accepted by fanon as his best friend), but also Pico and even Tricky. "Hello World" has Boyfriend offer the idea of Hex getting his own late-night talk show to share his experiences and motivates Hex just as his way of showing thanks. Glitcher also plays with the fanon idea that the virus that spontaneously infects Hex was created and sent by the doomsday cult responsible for the creation of Whitty. Sergeant John Captain (otherwise known as Tankman) is relatively what you'd expect; crass, crude, and overly macho, though the WITH LYRICS take on his week implies he has some hints of A Father to His Men, and while he tries very hard to hide it, he does show some concern for Steve when Pico shoots him. Also acts as somewhat of a Foil to his fellow Newgrounds mascot, Pico, where as Pico shows some willingness to change his act, Tankman leans hard on the fourth wall and reviles having to be "kid friendly" on YouTube, and his week ends with him stating he's going back to Newgrounds after the Dearest family teleports his guns and tank ammo away. His post-credits appearance where he runs RecD over with the tank during his end song has him advertise Newgrounds to the public, promising "guns, violence, and hot stuff". Garcello is relatively the same as his canon self, with the only real difference being his added backstory and mission from Daddy Dearest to trick Boyfriend into taking his cigarettes. He obtained his cigarettes from one of Dearest's roadies, with the cigarettes being a curse that binds them to his soul unless he passes the pack onto someone else. Annie is relatively the same too, right down to being Garcello's best friend, but FNF with Lyrics adds on that she tried brewing all sorts of different mixtures to release Garcello from his curse. Bob is simultaneously the Boyfriend's creation and his original counterpart, and gets absolutely furious when the Boyfriend replaces Bob's lore with his own. He still hates being compared to Dream, though. Ron is relatively the same, but his Straw Misogynist tendencies are explained here by people shoving art of the Girlfriend into his head, and ignoring his memes. Edd's Britishness is played up to contrast with the American Boyfriend, and he also shows pride in his and his show's popularity, claiming that he doesn't need a invoked Colbert Bump from Boyfriend.

Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS (Web Animation) / int_723be11b | comment |
Villain Has a Point: Despite her methods and literally being that world's version of Satan, Sarvente wasn't wrong when she told The Boyfriend that The Girlfriend isn't as trustworthy as she appears and that dating her has caused him (will continue to cause him) nothing but trouble in the long run. Sarvente even claims that Girlfriend is really a toxic influence over him and is secretly planning to take his soul. When Boyfriend asks Girlfriend if it's not true at the end of the video, she has nothing but awkward silence and then kisses Boyfriend to make him forget the whole thing. At the end of "Defeat & Finale With Lyrics", Girlfriend reveals that Boyfriend had been killed and revived over 13,000 times by that point, mentioning that she doesn't want to lose another boyfriend. Black calls her out on this, foreshadowing the possibility that Boyfriend will eventually catch on and turn away from her as a result. And worse, she knows this, meaning Black was correct in giving her this "The Reason You Suck" Speech.

Spared by the Adaptation: If the ending gag in "Tankmen WITH LYRICS" is anything go by; Senpai is still alive after Spirit breaks free from him, in a humorous aside gag as he wonders why it's raining guns in his world. Possibly justified by Senpai being a video game character.

Ambiguously Evil: Girlfriend seems to be a little suspicious. For one, she covered up the Spirit's fate by distracting Boyfriend. Later on, Sarvente predicted that Girlfriend would want to steal his soul in the future. When Boyfriend asks her about that, she doesn’t say yes or no, but just gives him another distracting kiss. Week 5 implies that Boyfriend has died and went to heaven multiple times, but Girlfriend would show up in demon form each time and pull him back down, claiming that "his soul belongs to [her]". While she does this to revive Boyfriend, whether she has malicious intentions with it or not isn't made clear. And the episode once again ends with Boyfriend getting suspicious, and Girlfriend distracting him with a mistletoe. Following this, in Week 6 With Lyrics, she seduces Boyfriend right after he asks about what just happened with Spirit. It is implied that she is the one "mucking up the spacetime continuum" and messing with Edd's flashbacks in Challeng-Edd with Lyrics.

Rewatch Bonus: At the beginning of "Defeat & Finale With Lyrics", the number "13542" is shown before the events kick in, which would be odd enough on its own. But after Girlfriend reveals to Black that she knows what he did to Boyfriend 13,541 times in succession, albeit with no memory of succeeding, it suddenly adds up, making Black's Wham Lines hit harder.

Boyfriend-Blocking Dad
Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS (Web Animation) / int_997ce6ad | comment |
Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Despite Daddy Dearest being an Adaptational Nice Guy, he's still extremely overprotective of his daughter, and antagonize Boyfriend if he violates his rule. Best shown in "Hex Full Week", where after Glitcher, both Boyfriend and Girlfriend violate the latter's curfew of 10:00 PM. Just as it hits 10:01, Daddy Dearest INSTANTLY teleports to the basketball court to try and take Boyfriend's soul. Later on, he lies to his daughter that humans love plane crashes, and then attempts to kill Boyfriend by crashing his own plane. It doesn’t help that he painted it to say “Daddy Dearest’s Boyfriend Destroying Jet.

Spooky Month focuses on Skid and Pump, once again with Boyfriend and Girlfriend nowhere to be seen. Leitmotif
Friday Night Funkin' WITH LYRICS (Web Animation) / int_9f6fb586 | comment |
Leitmotif: Some songs from the game and other franchises are repurposed for story bits. "High" plays when Boyfriend is hailing for a taxi in Mommy Must Murder With Lyrics. A soft, childish version of "Winter Horrorland" plays with the arrival of "Mr. Lemon." "Scary Swings" plays when Skid and Pump come back with the Eyes of the Universe. A frantic, brassy version of "Ballistic" plays when Boyfriend starts fanboying over Whitty, followed by a more lax version of "Lo-Fight" as Girlfriend tries and fails to convince him to leave him alone. "Carol Roll" begins to play when Carol steps in to defuse Whitty. The electronic droning that opens "Glitcher" plays during both times IRIS hacks Hex. A proper chiptune remix of the song also plays when they challenge Daddy Dearest in the Weekend Update, only for him to let Boyfriend take the stage instead. A menacing, orchestrated version of "Dad Battle" plays when Daddy Dearest arrives at the basketball court because of The Boyfriend being out with The Girlfriend after 10 PM. A rendition of "Ugh" plays when Tankman cuts in line. A dramatic rendition of "Stress" plays when Tankman believes that Boyfriend, Girlfriend, and Pico are spies for the enemy following the song proper, and threatens to personally kill the former two while the latter ran off when he ran out of ammo. A rendition of "Guns" plays when Tankman squashes the creator of the video with his tank to promote Newgrounds while the latter was doing his outro. "Good Enough" starts playing when Annie shows up to help Garcello... only for it to slow to a stop when she realizes she's too late. An easy-going remix of "Bopeebo" plays in the Week 1 remake, when Boyfriend convinces Daddy Dearest that he's just a fan of his music and not at all trying to date his daughter. It continues for as long as they're amicable toward one another. An ominous remix of "Dad Battle" plays when Boyfriend accidentally lets slip that the opposite is true. It swells into a more triumphant remix when Boyfriend stands up to Daddy for basically treating his daughter as an archive of his accomplishments. The instrumental for "Parish" plays when Sarvente is trying to convince Boyfriend to join her church. It twists into a hybrid between Parish and Worship following the former song playing proper and Sarv subsequently beginning to lose her temper. A dark, militant-esque cover of "Zavodila" plays when Ruv steps up to convince Boyfriend, namely a slowed-down version of the rather infamous third verse. It plays again when Boyfriend encounters Juno-Ruv, courtesy of noncanon son Selever. A dramatic remix of Gospel plays following Sarv transforming into her true self. An angry, frantic version of "Philly Nice" plays when Boyfriend tries to get Pico to turn in his gun in the Week 3 remake, which only serves to piss him off and threaten to blow BF's brains out like Daddy originally hired him to do.

Harmful to Minors: When Pico is sentenced to community service on telling stories to young children in the library, he decides to tell them about how he and his friends brutally murdered the Uberkids. As expected, they were traumatized, and Boyfriend calls him out. And judging by his reaction, this isn't the first time Pico has told his violent stories to children.

Take That!: Per what The Girlfriend says, Hell Twitter is just regular Twitter. Boyfiend's backstory, which is made up of Stylistic Suck, references the many, many mods based on Pibby that purely take a random character and infect them with The Darkness, via a corrupted Huggy Wuggy (and Sonic.exe) that shows up for no reason to fight Boyfiend. After Boyfriend mentions that the real Sonic sang into a microphone at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit), he goes into a long explanation on the inconsistency of the Sonic lore, including the two worlds canon and Classic Sonic being from both the past and another dimension.

Unfortunately, it ends up only teleporting him, leaving Girlfriend and Sonic.exe behind, with them both disgusted by the idea he left his girlfriend to die. Yes, even Sonic.exe finds that too cruel.

Adaptational Wimp: While Girlfriend does display her powers here before the Tankmen can shoot her, she only manages to take down 2 Tankmen by manipulating gravity, after which it's made clear that she can't take down the rest of the Tankmen due to their sheer numbers and would have actually got killed without Pico, while in the original game, it was confirmed by Word of God that all of the Tankmen would have been screwed even if Pico didn't show up. Goes double for Too Slow WITH LYRICS as Girlfriend is completely canceled out by .exe, whereas the original mod had the exact opposite happening.

Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In "Whitty FULL WEEK WITH LYRICS", as Ballistic nears its end, Boyfriend decides it's time that he and Girlfriend left Whitty to his devices...after riling him up in first place and not taking the chance to get the hell out of there when he had the chance. Whitty's quick to state that he wouldn't get far before he "blew it" again. Happened twice in "Week 7 (TANKMEN) WITH LYRICS": When Pico's trying to shoot Sgt. John Captain, he runs away once he realized he ran out of bullets. Later in the same video, Sgt. John Captain drove away using his tank after GF's parents took away the Tankmen's guns, but not before giving another roast on YouTube.

Senpai is relatively the same besides a change to one of his in-game linesnote His Freudian Threat towards Boyfriend was changed into "But keep it up, and the things I'll do to you aren't going to be very “E for Everyone." but his irritation suddenly turns to desperation once The Boyfriend points out that his disc will eventually rot away. This also highly implies that Senpai is ''self-aware'' that's he's in a video game.

Big Damn Heroes | |

Big Damn Heroes: Done a lot of times: Just when Monster is about to eat Boyfriend and Girlfriend in "South and Monster With Lyrics", Skid and Pump return with their friend The Eyes of the Universe, who hypnotizes Monster long enough for everyone to escape. After "Ballistic" in "Whitty Full Week", Whitty hits his Rage Breaking Point and tries to unleash his "unbeatable move": self destructing. Just before he can do this, Carol comes in, snuffs out his fuse and convinces him to leave the duo alone. In "Hex Full Week", after "Glitcher" just as Daddy Dearest tries to steal the Boyfriend's soul for violating the Girlfriend's curfew, Hex comes back to life and accidentally knocks him out. Much like in the actual game, Pico is contractually obligated to save Girlfriend, and by proxy "saves Boyfriend's bacon", to stop the Tankmen from shooting Girlfriend. Additionally after "Stress", Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest teleport all of the Tankmen's guns and ammo into Hating Simulator (much to Senpai's chagrin) to protect their daughter and, by extension, her boyfriend. Of all people during the Date Week, Funk E. gets one after "Perfume" where he subdues Updike during a power outage so Carol and Whitty can escape.

Running Gag: The massive line of opponents facing off with the Boyfriend. Included in it are Jevil, Furret, and King Dedede, referencing some of RecD's previous works. They are never given speaking roles until the Week 7 teaser where Tankman butts in. Giorno Giovanna is usually somewhere in the background of each video. He's seen as an actor in The Ooga Booga, on the back of Boyfriend's hat, on the mirror of Mommy Mearest's limo, as a poster in Girlfriend's room, and on one of the advertisements at the basketball court. It's likely the signature of Kermo Giovanna, an artist who works on these videos. Whenever Daddy Dearest appears, the subtitles usually say some variant of "Daddy Dearest Appearest".
