Bunnicula is an American animated television series from Warner Bros. Animation developed by Jessica Borutski, produced by Borutski herself and Maxwell Atoms, and distributed by Warner Bros. Television.Loosely based on the children's book series by James Howe and the late Deborah Howe with some influences from the previous Ruby-Spears special (itself now owned by WB), the show is a dark comedy about a vampire rabbit who likes carrot juice instead of blood, a Siamese cat who tries to rationalize everything, and a dog who just goes with the flow. The show can be found streaming in its entirety on Boomerang.

Living Forever Is Awesome
Bunnicula / int_1beef720 | comment |
Living Forever Is Awesome: Bunnicula, obviously, fully support this philosophy. Chester, when he thought that he is turning into vampire in 'Catula' was initially devastated - until Bunnicula pointed out, that living forever he would be able to meet all great peoples of the future, witness scientific advancements, read all books ever existed. Harold firmly believe in that, too.

Spiritual Successor | |
Bunnicula / int_27a42ebc | comment |
Spiritual Successor: Warner Bros Animation's slate mostly has featured WB, HB and DC legacy adaptations. This series seemed to be an outlier. However it is somewhat clear the Ruby-Spears special had some role in getting this made.note There are two interpretations of how this came to be. A. When digging through which obscure specials from HB and RS they had they realized they still had the rights to the book series. B. When digging through things they have but don't own the characters, Bunnicula was one they wanted to license back in. The dvd crediting the series to WB though implies it's B. Regardless of that it makes series like this appear to be Warner Bros Animation's attempt to add more animated adaptations, which makes them even more of a successor to Ruby Spears and Hanna-Barbera because that was the other regular part of their output (loose adaptations of other sources).

Power-Up Food: Draining certain vegetables or plants gives Bunnicula different abilities: Eating an extra big carrot gives him X-Ray Vision. Sugarbeets increase his hyperactivity. Squash makes one of his feet grow huge. Onions make him cry high pressure torrents of water. Peppers gives him fire breath. Broccoli makes him muscular, Spinach having a similar effect. Baby carrots make him shrink. Eggplants turn him into a giant purple egg, which then hatches into a giant three-eyed monster. Yams give him the power of invisibility. Garlic turns him into a skeleton, but he can restore himself in the manner of zipping up clothing. Cacti turn him into a cactus-bunny. Prehistoric plants preserved in amber turn him into a prehistoric creature. Cacao beans turn him into a chocolate rabbit, and vanilla neutralizes it. Catnip turns him into a cat. Iceberg lettuce turns him into a snowbunny, and gives him ice breath. Blueberries cause him to go into a deep depression. Vegetables cooked in a metal high speed cooker give him metallic skin. Artichokes, while also giving him the hiccups, make him lose body parts one by one. Sunflowers make him sick. Romanesco broccoli creates clones of himself. Seaweed turns him into a Godzilla-esque monster. Mangoes give Telekinesis. Cabbage makes him burp hard enough to propel him.

So when Bunnicula becomes a cat he becomes much meaner than normal.

Artistic License – Animal Care: Some of the things Mina feeds Bunnicula would kill a normal rabbit, such as onions. A Justified Trope, as Bunnicula is not exactly a normal rabbit. Oddly, she knew not to let Chester eat garlic. Averted in the episode "Walking Fish". When Bunnicula gives Harold the magic harmonica and asks him to play, Harold initially thinks it's a chocolate bar and rightfully points out that giving dogs chocolate is bad for their health. The fact that dogs are not supposed to have chocolate gets brought up again in "The Chocolate Vampire Bunny", which also points out that cats can't eat chocolate either and grapes are poisonous to dogs. Ironically, in the original books Harold regularly ate chocolate, and would even lampshade how unrealistic this was. In "Ghost Chef", Harold eats a bunch of pickles, which are poisonous to dogs. In "The Gingerdread Man", Harold eats a large amount of sweets without ill effects. He still avoids the chocolate, though.

Pulls another Bunnicula out of his mouth, which pulls another Bunnicula out of its mouth. Turns into a giant realistic rabbit that resembles Bunnicula from the namesake books, crushing Chester and Harold. Makes a Nightmare Face and roars. Unleashing the Ghost Pepper out of his mouth. Unzipping his fur. Turning into a three-eyed monster. Summon a mouth in his stomach. Patches the Weredude appears. Harold sucks in a ghost dog and gets possessed. His eyes pop out. Purple tentacles come out of his eyes and mouth. He also enlarges his head into a Creepy Cute face with the same pink aura from "Collar Me Crazy".

Shout-Out: This Bunnicula is adopted by a girl called Mina, named after Mina Harker, the protagonist in the original Dracula novel. The episode "Alligator Tears" has her watching a cartoon about two ducks delivering bread. Bunnicula and company live in Orlock Apartments, named after the namesake count in Nosferatu. One recurring character is a guinea pig named Lugosi, after Bela Lugosi, the actor who played the movie version of Dracula. There's a doberman character named "Fluffy the Vampire Pointer" who hunts vampires.
