A Bar Brawl is a fight scene where the emphasis is less on fighting skill and more on destruction of furniture. Glass will be broken, ordinary bottles will be turned into weapons, teeth will go flying and very probably a chair as well, most likely across somebody's back. Someone will probably swing from a chandelier, even if there weren't any there to start with. Flipping the Table, smashing someone's head into a jukebox, or making a Battering Ram out of another Improvised Weapon are not unheard of either. At some point, the fighting will become widespread among the patrons who aren't involved in the instigating argument. A good clue this is about to happen is when The Piano Player secures the piano and leaves (and a subversion is if he's the one starting the trouble). Bonus points (or perhaps a Face Palm) if someone gets thrown out the window and / or slides across the counter, or if the guy who starts the fight was actually there to try to PREVENT violence from occurring. In the most over-the-top settings, the brawl starts due to a completely banal reason, often a random act of violence which swiftly spreads across the bar, and typically involves patrons fighting each other, while having been chatting friendly just until that point. After all is said and done, they might return to good terms, maybe even implying that brawls like that are a local custom. The last man standing may be charged with Paying for the Action Scene. In some cases, the owner or manager may see the fight coming and encourage everyone to Take It Outside. This sometimes works. The nightclub variation ups the ante with bass thumping beats as neon technicolors overwhelm the senses while simultaneously blood is spilled on the dance floor. Bar Brawls are staples of The Western, and not uncommon in The Need for Mead or contemporary martial arts settings. They can be triggered by a "Hey, You!" Haymaker. This commonly overlaps with Escalating Brawl. Sometimes it's capped with a Check, Please! moment. Compare and contrast Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting. If this scene takes place in a diner, it's a Diner Brawl, though the Diner Brawl can also be the Porting Disaster of the Bar Brawl. If it happens during a poker game or something similar, it's a Gambling Brawl. It happens in Real Life and the destruction of furniture is Truth in Television: when drunk, people are less likely to aim their blows or even stand properly; additionally, the smarter fighters (aka the ones not engaging in "drunk boxing") will almost always be grabbing chairs, bottles, pool cues (used like a Broomstick Quarterstaff), and other nearby objects that just so happen to make for good improvised weapons. Do Not Try This at Home - what looks cool and exciting in fiction is a great way to end up incarcerated, hospitalized or even dead in Real Life. At the very least, it's liable to get you barred (no pun intended) from the establishment in question. |

Dragon Age: In the first game, a sizable number of these in Denerim, one in Lothering, and one outside of a bar at the Lake Calinhad. Hell, in these bar fights you actually get a Rogue class specialization and an NPC follower! In the second game, one of the 'follower base' locations (where your companions live when they're not in your party) is a bar called the Hanged Man. It isn't all that surprising, then, that you seem to get into fights there at least once a chapter. Isabela is introduced fighting against three guys (and apparently started one that wound up involving more than twenty people, an incident which landed her in jail for a fortnight), and your opponents can include drunken wretches, corrupt guardsmen, and irritable blood mages. In the third game, one of these can happen offscreen if the Inquisitor is human. If the player opts to publicly denounce some distant relatives who are trying to take advantage of their position, one cousin gets so incensed that he picks a fight with an Inquisition soldier in a tavern. This descended into a full brawl that ended when an angry cook took a rolling pin to the cousin's head. Blackwall explains that he got recruited into the Grey Wardens because of one of these. He stepped in when some drunken louts were harassing the waitress, they ganged up on him, and Blackwell knocked them all out. Even when one of them broke a chair over Blackwall's back, Blackwall just grabbed a leg from the broken chair and used it as a bludgeon. This fracas was witnessed by a passing Grey Warden, who recruited Blackwall on the spot. |

X-Men: Charles Xavier would occasionally Flash Back to his past friendship with Magneto, before the two became bitter enemies. One of the most memorable of these involved the two starting a Bar Brawl with a bunch of drunken sailors because Charles didn't like seeing them pick on a cripple for "being different" — and winning without using their mutant powers. Well, mostly without their powers... Another X-Men comic has a bar brawl between the Juggernaut and Colossus. Surprisingly, there was no property damage. Wolverine gets into these all the time. |

The Night Unfurls: Variations of these happen all the time when Kyril is in a Fantasy Tavern, though it is never played straight every time, as little to no furniture is shown or described to be destroyed in any way, minus any blood or gore spilled on the floor. Original version: A subverted case occurs at the end of Chapter 9, where some thugs think it's a good idea to start a fight with Kyril in Hound's Head Bar. Rather than a brawl, Kyril simply draws his pistol and shoots the lead thug in the chest and, besides threatening the others not to rush him, he interrogates them for the whereabouts of Michelle Pantielle and associates of the Black Dogs. Super effective. In Chapter 10, Kyril notices five Black Dog mercs about to antagonise him while conversing with Grace in the same bar as before. To be frank, this "brawl" can be summarised as "Kyril killing five people in quick succession". Chapter 28 has six traitorous soldiers launching a preemptive assault on Kyril and his cadre of hunters in Talon Bar. Take a guess on how long the brawl lasted, in addition to which side comes out victorious in the end. Remastered version: Subverted during Chapter 8 in Half-Moon Inn. A brawl is about to break out when Kyril deliberately provokes Morgan by pulling Grace close to him. It does not come to pass in the end, as Morgan's men decide to bail their leader out upon witnessing him receiving a kick in the gut that sends him flying. |

When entering a Bad Guy Bar Curt Newton brings up this trope, so Joan Randall says You Watch Too Much X and points out the multiple Sonic Stunners covering the customers from the ceiling. Those who own bars just want their customers to drink and be happy, so in case of a fight they just knock everyone out. However it turns out they've been Lured into a Trap and get attacked by everyone in the bar because they're working for the Big Bad. With Strings Attached: At the beginning of the Second Movement, having just arrived in the Baravadan city of Ta'akan, the four unknowingly wander into a skahs pub, where they have barroom brawls roughly once a night. It's just about all the skahs have to do these days. Afterward, the employees sell healing potions to the crowd, and all the broken stuff magically disappears. Dwarf Fortress introduced expanded emotions and taverns at the same time, and it was only a matter of hours before they started brawling in their taverns every now and then. Not too common, but they get huge, often expanding to involve most of your fortress and whatever guests you may have, and while deaths are uncommon (and usually accidental, most likely some poor idiot dodging down a stairwell) you can expect broken bones, knockouts and plenty of lost teeth as everyone beats the shit out of each other with their cups. Especially hilarious if you gave them heavy iron goblets beforehand.

In Max Payne 3 this comes in both the nightclub and bar variety, with the nightclub variety happening shortly after a kidnapping attempt earlier. Later, a run down bar becomes the opening scene for a shootout. The Star Wars mod deserves credit for having what is possibly the most entertaining bar brawl sequence in a video game. Unlike standard Mount and Blade bars, the cantinas in the Star Wars mod are chock-full of NPCs, often upwards of two dozen, and boast great variety in clientele, such as Rodians, Sand People, Mandalorians, and other unlikely faces on all drinking next to each other in what is implied to be a very tenuous sense of neutrality. It's possible to trigger a bar fight in such a way that everyone ends up fighting everyone else in a giant free for all, including the bartender, and then to win by slashing or blasting your way to the top of a heap of bodies before making your exit. |

''Star Trek: Deep Space Nine': In "Bar Association", O'Brien, Bashir, and Worf have an off-screen argument about organized labor that somehow escalated into a bar brawl, landing all three in a jail cell. Sisko was not pleased. Another DS9 brawl occurs in "Visionary", as the natural result of having Klingons, Romulans, and alcohol in the same place. During the occupied DS9 arc, the station resistance is able to engineer a brawl between Cardassian troops and a number of Jem'Hadar after Rom steals a copy of a Cardassian contingency plan to poison the Jem'Hardar in the event they run out of ketracel-white (Jem'Hadar in withdrawal tend to go on indiscriminate killing rampages) and arranges for the information to fall into Jem'Hadar hands. The fight—between the genetically engineered Super Soldiers and DS9's go-to analogue for the Nazis—immediately turns deadly. In "Sons and Daughters", General Martok reprimands Worf for breaking up a messhall brawl because it would let the crew of their Klingon warship release some pre-battle tension. That was a brawl involving knives, incidentally, and Worf broke it up because his own son was at risk. |

Lucky Luke: Most pianists and dancers can only play right with "atmosphere" — that is, massive fights during their performances. The bartender removing the giant mirror just before the fight, only for it to get shattered just after, is a Running Gag. In one case, the people are at the bar following a funeral and a brawl breaks out for whatever reason. At the end, Luke raises his glass to the dead man (and joined by everyone), and two participants are seen limping away, commenting on how well that fight turned out, shame the dead guy couldn't have been in it. Averted at another time with a town composed exclusively of men, who no longer have the heart to start brawling anymore as there's no woman to fight over. In one of these brawls, two fighters comment that they aren't even sure what they're brawling for, they just do for the sake of it. |

Star Trek: Star Trek: The Original Series: In "The Trouble with Tribbles", Scotty, Chekov and several other Starfleet officers get into a brawl with some visiting Klingons aboard Space Station K-7. When the cast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was to be spliced into original series footage for the episode "Trials and Tribbleations" (which returned via Time Travel to "The Trouble With Tribbles"), one of the more difficult tasks they faced was learning how to avoid the more realistic fight choreography used today in favor of 1960s-style stage fighting so they would not look out of place during the Bar Brawl. The difference in styles is lampshaded effectively when Dr Bashir attempts to throw some "old school" bar brawl moves and promptly pulls a muscle in his shoulder. Star Trek: The Next Generation had SEVERAL bar brawls: "Hollow Pursuits" opens with one in one of Barclay's holodeck fantasies, where he confronts holographic recreations of the Enterprise senior officers. In "Sarek", Vulcan ambassador Sarek is struggling to contain his emotions due to Bendii syndrome, and it starts affecting the Enterprise crew, most notably when Chief O'Brien and a sciencer officer argue about who took a table first in Ten-Forward. Similar to "Sarek", in "Night Terrors", the crew is put on edge due to a lack of sleep caused by a Negative Space Wedgie and it's only stopped by Guinan suddenly using a phaser rifle. "A Fistful Of Datas" has Alexanders's Ancient West holodeck program. When Worf beats the bad guy and his minions with a minimum of effort Aleaxander protests it was too easy and ups the difficulty level for the program and resets it back to when he and Worf are first entering the bar. This time Worf finds the experience more enjoyable. Honorable mentions go to Riker for minor bar violence on two separate occasions, neither of which erupted into full-scale brawls. In "Tapestry", Q (possibly, it's up for interpretation) showed Jean-Luc Picard that a bar brawl was a pivotal moment in the life of the young captain (even though it nearly killed him, he had to get a artificial heart after he was stabbed). Essentially, had Picard been the sort of man who would have avoided the fight, he would have never made captain; his career stalling as a junior officer who never takes risks, and is never noticed. That was a brawl involving knives, incidentally, and Worf broke it up because his own son was at risk. In Star Trek: Voyager "Survival Instinct", Harry Kim and Tom Paris specifically look for a bar on the alien space station the ship is docked at. They (and some other crew members) wind up getting into an off-screen bar fight with some other aliens over some alien game. Janeway reprimands them and confines them to their quarters...but stops to make sure they won the fight. |

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception opens with Nate and Sully starting a brawl in an old-fashioned English pub — specifically, they take on The Dragon and his thugs in the parlour, but it spills over into the rest of the pub and the English patrons are more than keen to give the troublemaking Yanks a good thumping. It's done to teach the player Uncharted 3's new hand-to-hand combat mechanic, and setting this tutorial in a pub gives the player an opportunity to hit bad guys in the head with bottles, pool cues and fridge doors.

The pool hall fight in the first Rush Hour movie. Jackie Chan's character, Inspector Lee, greets the African-American bartender with the words "Wassup, my nigga?" having seen Detective Carter (played by Chris Tucker), who is friends with the bartender and patrons, do the same (to be fair, though, before entering the building, Carter did advise Lee to "follow my lead, and do what I do"). He doesn't realize that because he is a stranger and Asian (rather than black), he does not have N-Word Privileges. The bartender and two of the (black) patrons accost him, and nearly all the other patrons join in the fight when they witness the ensuing scuffle. Needless to say, he easily kicks all their asses.

The Professionals. In "Wild Justice" when Bodie appears to be deliberately provoking one using the "spilled drink" excuse, Doyle mentions that a member of CI5 could lose their job for getting involved in a fight off duty (fortunately the man concerned refuses to rise to the bait). That doesn't mean that they can't do so in the line of duty. A notable example is in "The Female Factor" where Bodie fights a drunk while holding a pint in one hand.

Star Trek: The Original Series: In "The Trouble with Tribbles", Scotty, Chekov and several other Starfleet officers get into a brawl with some visiting Klingons aboard Space Station K-7. |

As soon as Lucy steps into the eponymous guild in Fairy Tail, a bar brawl breaks out. Apparently this happens all the time, particularly whenever the most boisterous of mages are in the guild at the same time. When the guild gets rebuilt from the ground up after having been destroyed by a rival guild, Natsu hates how different it all feels... until it has its first brawl, at which point he's much happier about the redesign. |

At IWA Mid-South No Retreat...No Surrender, January 21, 2006, Chris Hero faced Garbage Wrestler Necro Butcher in a "European Rules" match with the stipulation that if Necro lasted the time limit Hero would have to face him in a Barroom Brawl Match. Hero imposed tons of rules on the premise that there would be no way Necro would be able to keep up with him. Instead, Necro fought Hero to a draw (Hero won Round 4, Necro won Round 5), thus forcing Hero into the situation he did not want to find himself in, a Barroom Brawl against Necro Butcher. Star Trek (DC Comics): In the first volume of DC's Star Trek, the recreation deck is hosting a bachelor party for Konom, the pacifistic Klingon who had been given an honorary Starfleet commission by Kirk. Per Kirk's orders, Ensign Bearclaw provides non-alcoholic punch. Not satisfied with it, Scotty, Chekov, and Bones all spike the punch. This leads to a drunken argument between Bearclaw and Konom breaking out into an all-out brawl, and Kirk, who had been on duty, gets beaned with a thrown bottle the moment he enters the room.

Legends of Tomorrow: The pilot sees the Odd Friendship of Sara, Snart, and Mick going to a bar while the team are in the 70s and starting one of these after Sara fights off some thug's unwanted advances. They all seem to enjoy themselves immensely. In "The Magnificent Eight", the team hides out in the Old West. When an outlaw accuses Stein of cheating at cards and tries to shoot him, only for Snart to shoot him first, his gang attacks the team, staring a brawl even bigger than the one from the pilot. Hilariously, Mick is shown to be missing out, due to being passed out drunk. In "The Justice Society of America", the team goes undercover in a Nazi bar in occupied Paris. But then Ray can't bring himself to do the "Heil Hitler" salute, and punches out the Nazi trying to make himself do it, starting a big fight. However, it gets cut short when the JSA arrives and knocks all the Nazis out. In "Outlaw Country", the team is once again in the Old West, and are trying to get close to outlaw Quentin Turnbull in order to shut down his operation. For once, they decide to intentionally start a bar brawl, only for Mick to screw up the plan by becoming fast friends with Turnbull. But Jonah Hex, who has a personal grudge with Turnbull, charges in, leading to a shootout and fight. Something similar happens in season 3 episode "Zari"; in another Bad Future version of Star City, the team is trying to protect the titular character from a water-controlling assassin. First they track her down in a bar then, when the assassin shows up, Sara has Mick start a brawl as a distraction. Really, it's become a Running Gag at this point that any episode featuring the Legends going to a bar will devolve into a fight at some point. |

There are four great Bar Brawls in the first three seasons of Babylon 5: In the first season, one is started by a guy trying to hit on a drunk Ivanova, resulting Ivanova beating up everyone in the bar. Garibaldi refused to arrest her. The second season was a dispute over a spilled drink in a bar containing at least a company of Marines (and one pilot), resulting in a massive free for all. It only ended with the bellowing of the Sergeant Major. The third season has two: Marcus investigates a kidnapping by walking into a seedy bar and state that if he isn't provided with information about the kidnapping within ten minutes, he will be the only man in the bar still standing. Ten minutes later, he looks around and declares "Bugger! Now I have to wait for one of them to wake up." In "Point of No Return" all Hell breaks loose on the zokalow when the first battle of the Earth Civil War is partially broadcast over the ISN newsfeed, a Bar Brawl on steroids. |

Used regularly on Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers; if the Rangers head to a tavern to meet an informant, it's even money that one of these is going to start. Exaggerated in "Boomtown" where the fight starts in the bar, and soon turns into a town-encompassing free-for-all.

North to Alaska is basically bookended by a pair of epic barfights, which both trash the same bar, months apart, no less.

The Chronicles of Dorsa: Tasia going into the city incognito with Joslyn ends up causing this when she inadvertantly offends a tavern patron, leading to a brawl. Joslyn is wounded in the mayhem getting Tasia away, and she feels quite guilty as a result.

In the second season of Cobra Kai, Johnny and his old Cobra Kai buddies take Tommy on one last road trip before he succumbs to his terminal cancer. They stop at a bar, where a rude customer harasses a woman, but it's only when he calls Tommy "the ugliest Make-a-Wish kid I've ever seen" and tries to harass him that Johnny strikes first by ripping the guy's ear lobe off, which starts a massive brawl where the OG Cobra Kais emerge victorious.
