The Grow games are a series of quirky Flash puzzles games made by On Nakayama. You control a Sugar Bowl world, which you can fill with cute people, equally cute monsters, strange items, and odd architecture. The gameplay is simple: the game displays a selection of items, and the player must pick the items in the right order to advance the story. The items grow each turn and interact with ones previously chosen, providing clues that the player can use to figure out the correct sequence. The appeal of the games lies in the cartoon humour and surreal events that you trigger as you explore the possible sequences and get closer to the solution. Sometimes, the wrong choices can be almost as entertaining as the right ones. All the games are available to play online on Eyezmaze, the author's website, which also have other games with a similar ambiance by the same person. (The website is under reparations since Flash's death)The author also made Grow Comics, has a Youtube channel and a Twitter account where he posts news and occasionally do games with audience participation.

Cherry Tapping: In the solution of Grow Cannon. After getting a basin of water (and the basin itself) dropped on him, stomped on, zapped, run over by a train, and NUKED, the sleeping guy is still at 1 "hit point" left. Then the bear taps him for 1 point of "damage", causing him to wake up. In the related game Galves' Adventure, you must do this with a pebble (and get two wrong combinations) in order to get the Devil ending. By dropping the pebble and making the mouth monster throw it at the lion, it will deal 2 damage, lowering its health from 35 to 33 so that Devil Galves can defeat it in 3 hits.

Retired Badass: The intro of Grow Comeback is about a hero who defeats monsters and saves a child. Then time passes after he stops being a hero and he loses his gear and hair and gains weight. Once the game actually starts, the player must get him back to his heroic build so he can defeat one last monster.

Bizarre Alien Biology | |
Grow (Video Game) / int_1161fb48 | comment |
Bizarre Alien Biology: Most creatures in the Grow games works in strange ways, because the games use toon physics and the creator puts emphasis on creativity. In general, the way a creature works depends of the game, and pretty much every creature can transform in strange ways by interacting with an object or being in a specific place, but there are examples that are consistently weird. The Onkies have no faces, but can see and eat just fine, and their heads may also fall from their bodies, but their bodies can simply pick them up and put them back again. When they get exhausted, they melt as if they were made of wax. They also come in different colors that indicate either their gender, age or expertise depending of the game. Sometimes, they have the ability to self-duplicate. The Tonties are cyclops with horns. They live underground in colonies like ants, their colors and number of horns indicate their roles, and their queen is a big white Tontie-head with no body. One way for a white Tontie to become a queen is to have a crown fall on it. Its body is crushed under the weight of the crown and its own head (which also somehow gets bigger as the body is squished). Also, a different creature may turn into a white Tontie simply by falling into a spike. A big eye then appears on the creature whose original face somehow disappear and the spike become the newly-created Tontie's horn. The Rotta/Pierre is a creature that changes completely depending on if it's daytime or nighttime. Its "Rotta" form, which it takes during the day, is a blob monster that can shape-shift and which tends to sleep. Its "Pierre" form, which it takes during the night, is a round bat-like creature that splits in two if it's tapped by a hammer, after which a Onky comes out of it. Gluing the halves back together brings the Pierre back to life but changes its colors. Most of the time, Pierres have a yellow half and a green half, but the colors are sometime differents.

Palette Swap: The different Onkies from Grow Valley and Grow Clay all look the same except for their body color. Aside from a few physical differences, most Tonties look the same except for their skin and eye colors. The three monsters spawned by the demon in Grow RPG start off with the same appearance, except one is purple, one is cyan and one is yellow. In the end, they all are at different evolutionary states, so they do end up with different designs. The demon from Grow RPG goes from red to blue once the hero uses the orb on it. Aside from the color change, the demon's appearance is the same. The two hungry creatures from Grow Maze are exactly alike, except one is green while the other is pink. Most of the time, Pierres are represented as half-green and half-yellow, but we do see color variants in some Grow games and other works by the same creator. Before they evolve, all ten birds from Grow Cube Omega's second mode look the same except for their color.

Grow (Video Game) / int_3d5c5deb | comment |
Flat Character: For as much as the experts from Grow Valley count as characters, the life science expert (the pink Onky) has a really minor role in the game compared to his six partners. All he does is build a hospital with the help of some partners, but it doesn't have any influence on the game's progression and he doesn't help the others on their own projects. The pink Onky only serves to give a bonus turn for everyone else to finish their works.

Early-Installment Weirdness: Grow Ver.3 doesn't really have any objective beside putting every items to level max, nothing special even happens if you win the game beside the "CONGRATULATION !!" message that appear. Grow Ver.3 is the only game with a score system. The very first Pierre that appears in the Grow games series, in Grow Ver.3, has a half dark green and a half purple body, purple horns and no hands. While we do see Pierres with different color variants, the established default appearance for them is is a half pale green and half yellow body with white horns and hands. Grow Ver.3 and Grow RPG are the only grow games where you need to drag items on a GROW logo instead of only clicking on it. Grow RPG has faceless humans instead of the Onkies who appears for the first time in Grow Cube. The "level up" sound effect in Grow ver.3 and Grow RPG is different from later games.

The red ball from Grow Ver 3 could count as a small planet since every items and creatures are attracted by it's gravitational center, even though the red ball itself is placed on a gray ground. The game was later renamed Grow Planet, playing this trope straight regarding wether the ball is a planet or not. You end up making a little planet in the right path of Grow Ver.1. In Grow Island, you need a rocket-ship to pick up a blue potion on a planet that's even smaller than the examples above.

Color-Coded Characters: For Onkies: Men are light yellow, women are light pink, children are orange, and babies are light green. In Grow Valley and Grow Clay, your engineers are all colour-coded by occupation. In Grow Cinderella, you have a purple chariot driver onky and a brown butler onky. Tonties' colors seems to depend of their roles in their colonies, for example, the green ones digs the galleries, the red ones takes care of constructions like ladders and elevator, and the yellow ones takes care of anything money related. Chekhov's Gunman: If the player plays the right way in Grow Comeback, the child from the intro is revealed to be one of the hero's background supporters who then tries to beat the monster on his own, only to fail. His attempt gives the retired hero the motivation needed to defeat the monster.

Audience Participation
Grow (Video Game) / int_dd91f8d8 | comment |
Audience Participation: In October 2018, On made an audience participation game called Grow RT on his Japanese Twitter account. The game consisted of an image of a creature and gave the audience two choice of how the creature would evolve, similarly to how Grow ver. 1's gameplay works. If the image would get enough reteweets, the creature would evolve and the audience would be presented with two new options to choose from (All steps can be seen here on reverse order). The game got interrupted a week later due to the creator's health problem. In December 2020, he tried the concept once again on his more popular English account (All steps can be seen here). Once there was not enough people to reach the next evolution step (largely because the game went on a little hiatus), he decided to conclude the game with an animation that was made thanks to the specific choices the audience made during the Twitter game.

No Antagonist: Some games have a conflict that is not caused by a bad guy or by anyone at all. Grow Tower where the objective is to turn the sun on like if it was a lamp. Grow Cannon where you must help a sleeping guy to wake up after he broke his alarm clock. Grow Nano vol.2 where you must help someone put a baby bird back on its nest after it fell. Grow Nano vol.3 where you must heal an Onky who got sick by natural cause. Grow Cinderella where like in the original tale, you must help Cinderella prepare herself for the ball. Unlike the original tale, there is no indication that Cinderella's evil stepmother and stepsisters exist.

Nighttime Transformation: A reccuring creature in the Grow games and other Eyezmaze games is a creature whose form is different during the day and the night. During the day, it's a white blob who often sleep but can be awaken with an alarm clock, it's soft wax-like body makes it a bit of a shape-shifter and allows him grow limbs or a long neck. During the night, the creature is awake and gets hands, wings and horns and is half-green, half-yellow though the colors may change depending of the game. The day form is called "Rotta" and the night form is called "Pierre".

Oddball in the Series | |
Grow (Video Game) / int_f068cba | comment |
Oddball in the Series: Most games have their own unique schticks that make them unique, but a few examples stand out. Grow Ver.1 has a different kind of gameplay where instead of having a bunch of objects that you need to place in a certain order, you need to choose one item out of two to interact with an item that's already on the screen (sometime you only have one item to choose from). Then you are given another choice with different items. This goes on until you reach the end of the path you were going to. Grow nano vol 1 (And nano vol 0) has a different gameplay where the player just have to click on some parts of a structure to make it evolve. Grow Cannon has a different kind of gameplay where instead of directly placing objects, the player must use a cannon to fire in different spots and interact with the scenery. Grow Clay is visually unique as it uses clay animation instead of 2D digital animation like every other game in the series.
