To whoever is asking the question, a more appropriate answer would probably be either a "no," a "maybe," or in some cases no answer at all. Instead, however, it's answered with a blunt "Yes," or whatever else would be equivalent to "yes" in its own context. (For example, if Alice asks "Have you no shame?" Bob saying "No" or "None!" would count.) Normally followed by Alice's dumbfounded or dejected acceptance of Bob's answer. Maybe this reflects on differences between the asker and the answerer in terms of views toward the subject they are discussing. Maybe it implies that the answerer has a very blunt personality, such as that of a Deadpan Snarker, for instance, or is an unrepentant individual who doesn't bother to excuse their actions when questioned about them. Sometimes it could mean both, and by its very nature often does. Truth in Television, of course, especially in online discussions, given the sheer diversity of opinions, and in turn, higher rate at which what one would consider an inappropriate response, another considers quite fitting. May overlap with At Least I Admit It or I Can Live With That. Often a subtrope of Rhetorical Question Blunder, such as Does That Sound Like Fun to You? May be used as an Armor-Piercing Response to shut down an Armor-Piercing Question, and may or may not involve deliberately invoking Rhetorical Question Blunder. Compare with Insult Backfire, since it is often caused by similar things. Often associated with Brutal Honesty. See also Blunt "No", Flat "What", Little "No". Compare Mathematician's Answer. |

An interview on The Late Show with David Letterman led to some really amusing inversions; Johnny Depp was on the show to promote Public Enemies and when asked how he thought the film came out, he admitted he hadn't watched it. After some pressing he shyly explained he very rarely watches his own films, and shot down any recommendations with a series of Blunt Nos. | |

Shinrai: Broken Beyond Despair: Raiko does this when telling Rie that her choice of a zombie costume isn't the best idea for winning Taiko's heart. Taiko gets this when he asks Rie about her plan to have Runa pretend to be murdered during the first blackout. At the very end, another example happens during a flashback involving Kamen and Hiro, when the latter asks the former out, despite going out with said individual's best friend. |

In Bleach Captain Hitsugaya is asked by Captain Kurotsuchi whether he really believes that Kurotsuchi's technicians monitoring the Precipice world could have made a mistake, and responds with a simple yes. Kurotsuchi momentarily responds as if he said no before realizing the actual answer. During the Vandenreich’s first invasion of Soul Society, Ichigo demands to know if Yhwach is the enemy, who gives an ambiguous answer. Ichigo then furiously asks if he’s the one who’s currently trashing Soul Society, and now gets a straightforward yes. |

The Simpsons: Nelson uses this twice in a row during "22 Short Films About Springfield," when confronted by someone he pointed and laughed at. It is notable for being an example of someone doing this without any confidence. In "22 Short Films About Springfield," Principal Skinner conjoins this trope with Implausible Deniability to hide the fact that his house has caught fire from Superintendent Chalmers: In "Bart Gets Hit by a Car," Homer Simpson is suing Mr. Burns for hitting Bart with his car, and Burns invites him for a private chat: When Krusty is being prosecuted for armed robbery in "Krusty Gets Busted," he tearfully reveals that he can't read after being told to point out exhibit B, and asks if it's a crime to be illiterate. The prosecuter tells him that the evidence is betting slips. |

Naruto: In the Naruto (1997) pilot, there is an interesting example, in which the blunt yes is in agreement with the speaker with the question. The eponymous character tells Kuroda about his mission, in which he's unable to return to his village of youkai until he makes a friend. When he remarks that it's a "dumb training exercise," with a smile on his face, Kuroda tells him "Yeah... really dumb," then tells him the only one he can trust is himself, surprising him. A back-to-back double example: in the Viz translation of Kakashi Gaiden, during an argument over whether to break from the mission to save Rin, Obito asks Kakashi if he thinks emotion is nothing but a useless burden, and after a long pause, Kakashi says he does. Obito then decides to save Rin on his own and Kakashi asks Obito if he knows what happens to those who break the rules. Obito, who, unbeknownst to Kakashi, has learned about Sakumo's abandoning a mission to save his comrades, says "I do, and that's why the White Fang was a true hero." In the flashbacks leading up to the Uchiha massacre, some members of the clan confront Itachi, demanding to know why he wasn't at the meeting and informing him of the apparent suicide of Shisui Uchiha, Itachi's best friend and the only other absentee, while making it clear they suspect him. In the Sasuke and Sai arc, Shizune, who questions Tsunade's choice to send Naruto's team on the mission, asks Tsunade if she believes that Shizune's own team is less suited to the task. Tsunade says yes, explaining that Naruto's drive to succeed is the main factor in why she chose to let him go on the mission. Later on in the same arc, Naruto gets fed up with Sai after Sai criticizes him for making a mistake during a training session with Yamato. They finally get to the root of their feud- Naruto can't accept Sai as Sasuke's replacement, while Sai despises Sasuke for betraying the village. |

Shirobako: Aoi talks with Yamada about their director, and Yamada mentions how the director hides the storyboards to cover up how far behind he is on them. During a flashback to one of Aoi's job interviews, she ends up tripping over her words out of nervousness, resulting in the following exchange. It only gets worse after Masahiko Inami, the president, grills her over her decision to major in economics in college and chides her for saying she'd do "whatever" it takes to succeed. In Episode 19, Yano tracks down Iketani, the "Bearded Hermit," fishing at a pond and notes how surprising it is that an adult his age would run away from work. In Episode 20, Madoka, an episode director, tells Hiraoka that the freelancers the latter hired will have to redo their scenes. This exchange then escalates into a heated argument about Hiraoka's bad work ethic and eventually, into a physical altercation. |

Played straight when Kaoru, having done poorly on the first midterms and is in danger of being dropped from the team, asks if grades are really all that important. For example, when you get a job at night, you have to ask your uncle, Ryotaro Dojima, for permission, even though he's against you wandering around at night. This leads to the following exchange, and the dialogue option shown convinces Dojima to give in and let you go. During the drama club version of the Sun social link, you follow Yumi to the hospital after she gets a call informing her that her mother collapsed. You then witness her confront her mother, who matter-of-factly admits that she lied to Yumi, and wanted Yumi to come to see her dying father, even though he'd abandoned the family. After the conversation ends, Yumi demands to know whether you were listening, at which point you can say, "Yeah, I heard," or "What are you talking about?" Midway through Yukiko's Social Link, she grouses that she wishes her mother had agreed to an interview with a "news of the weird" TV show that would end up hurting the inn's reputation, since if it shuts down, she won't feel bad about her plans to leave Inaba. You can ask her if she's serious, and she says, "I'm serious." It's later implied, however, that Yukiko privately doubts her decision to leave and only wants that to happen so that she'll have no other choice; after coming to realize what the inn means to her, she changes her mind and decides to stay. When the Investigation Team talks about who would possibly want them dead, Kanji, the second person that the heroes saved, says that a lot of people hate him. He then asks Yukiko, the first person to be rescued from the TV, if she knows of anyone that wants her dead, and she flatly says no. |

In Persona 5, you can make dialogue choices like this, even toward the Creepy Twins who act as prison guards in the Velvet Room. Midway through June, Makoto, who's found proof that the protagonist and his friends are the Phantom Thieves but doesn't know everything about how they operate, makes a deal with them- if they help her take down a mob boss who's extorting Shujin Academy students, she won't report them to the police. The Thieves uncover the mob boss's identity, but are unable to enter his Palace, thus preventing them from stealing his heart. When Makoto checks up on them, they accuse her of being useless (the worst possible timing for that, considering Makoto's sister called her that the previous night). Several Mementos targets' Shadows will ask if they're terrible people after being defeated. You can say yes. |

Captain America: The First Avenger: This conversation where Steve is actually being considered to join the army after being turned down multiple times. Inverted at the climax. Also inverted at the start of the movie, where Steve attempts (yet again) to enlist: After Steve saves Bucky and the other prisoners from the 107th from the HYDRA camps, he puts together a team to take down the remaining HYDRA bases and goes to recruit some of the men he helped. When Red Skull is showing off his shiny new toys to a bunch of SS officers, one of them notices that his map of targets includes Berlin. Red Skull's response to this is very matter of fact. |

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online: M has LLENN take point, since as squad leader, she's the only one whose position is shown on the map during the regular scans. After revealing that he spotted another team in the vicinity apart from the one he'd been tracking, LLENN calls him out on using her as a decoy. Outside of the game, M (aka Goshi Asougi) meets up with LLENN (aka Karen Kohiruimaki) to ask for the latter's help. Pito is planning on competing in the second Squad Jam, but with a self-imposed condition- she'll commit suicide if she loses, unless LLENN defeats her, so Goshi wants Karen to participate and win. Karen asks Goshi why he doesn't tell the police or a psychiatrist about Pito, and Goshi says he won't go against Pito's wishes. |

However, it's later revealed that while Gauche was able to view the memories contained in the letter bullet, his memories weren't actually restored, and the Noir persona is still dominant. Persona: Persona 4: You have the option to do this many times at varying points with multiple dialogue choices, with varying results. In Persona 4: Arena, Yosuke gets two in rapid succession from his Shadow, when Yosuke asks if his own desire to be a hero inadvertently caused the tournament. |

The New Batman Adventures: In "Joker's Millions", The Joker and Harley Quinn run out of gas during a escape, and begin to fight over the fact Harley didn't refuel the car. She reminds him they're out of money and rhetorically asks what he expected her to do: "fill the tank, shoot the guy, and drive off?" Of course, The Joker being who he is, says yes. For an added bonus, Harley's response is that he should have told her that's what he wanted, then. In "Girl's Night Out", Harley, Poison Ivy, and Livewire form a Villain Team-Up. After Batgirl neutralizes Livewire's powers by coating her with insulating dust. Harley sprays her with a seltzer bottle, making the situation worse. |

In Three-Point Shot, at the end of the first trial, the first culprit admits that Kaede was supposed to take the fall for the murder, which not only is what happened in canon, but was also part of the in-universe storyline. Horrified, Kaede then asks the culprit if they wanted her dead from the start, and gets the following response. The third killer tries to poison Kokichi's tea but ends up accidentally poisoning an innocent victim instead. Kokichi realizes that the killer could easily have ended up poisoning Shuichi (who also likes honey in his tea) by mistake, and when he asks whether the killer would have a problem with that, the killer says, "Not really." |

One Piece In Sanji's backstory, he and Zeff, who'd attacked the cruise ship where Sanji was working, end up shipwrecked and wash up on a rock in the middle of the sea. Zeff gives Sanji a small bag of food to last him until help arrives, while claiming that he took the larger share for himself due to being an adult and insisting that they not speak to one another. In reality, Zeff gave Sanji all the food they had(Zeff's bag contained treasure), and in the manga, ate his own leg. After running out of food, Sanji decides to steal Zeff's food, and uncovers the truth. This leads to a series of questions by a shocked Sanji, to which Zeff flaty replies with "yes" answers. Tashigi says this after saying that she believes Zoro is assuming she's weaker because she's a woman. An inverted version happens later in Dressrosa, when one of the dwarves is giving Zoro directions (after having personally experienced how bad he is about that sort of thing). Inverted during the Water Seven arc, when Robin claims to have betrayed the Straw Hats during the confrontation at the Galley-La headquarters. When they're facing down the CP9 assassins, Zoro's initial distrust of Robin seems to be vindicated. In a flashback to before the above incident, Robin reveals the real reason why she apparently betrayed the Straw Hats- to protect them from the Buster Call. She then makes it clear that their well-being is the one thing she values more than her life and even the fate of the world. After Bluneo explains how the Buster Call traumatized Robin, and that the threat of it being used against her friends caused Robin to despair, Sanji asks if CP9 knowingly used that trauma to force Robin to surrender. Blueno stoically and unapologetically says, "Of course we did." |

In Saki Achiga-hen, this exchange between Izumi Nijou and Hiroko "FunaQ" Funakubo happens after Izumi loses badly in the semi-finals, and Hiroko mentions all the strong first-years who have come by.. In a much earlier scene, which takes place when Nodoka and her friends Shizuno and Ako are in elementary school. In Saki Shinohayu -dawn of age-, a blunt "no" happens when Kanna recruits her friends to form a mahjong club and defeat Hayari Mizuhara, who won the local tournament, defeating Kanna. The earliest case is in Saki between Saki and Koromo during the Nagano Qualifier Captains' match. Koromo is in the lead but Saki has begun a winning streak that allowed her to acquire enough points to make a comeback win possible. |

If the Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device: Rogal Dorn has negative amounts of tact, and if the answer to any question is technically a simple yes (or a simple no) he will cut the chase and resort to it. While this usually amounts to Mathematician's Answer on a massive scale, it quite often enters this trope too. One of the very first examples: When a group of Imperials encounters the Dark Eldar, who tell them that their Supreme Overlord, Asdrubael Vect, wishes to meet with them. When they are reluctant to go with the Dark Eldar, one of them asks "Come the fuck on, Vect wants a word with you and you expect us to immediately slaughter you wholesale?" The response is a resounding chorus of "Yes!" from not just everyone physically present, but those watching the scene through a broadcast as well. |

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: Will Turner reunites with his father, "Bootstrap" Bill Turner on Davy Jones' ship, the Flying Dutchman, only for Will to be blamed for a mishap and punished with A Taste of the Lash. Jones, realizing the two are related, orders Bootstrap to do the whipping, and Bootstrap refuses, but gives in when he's told that the alternative is letting the bosun do it. Bloom Into You: Touko has spent her entire life trying to emulate her late older sister, Mio. When she learns from one of Mio's old classmates that Mio wasn't anything close to being the honor student other people thought she was, she's deeply shaken and discusses it with Yuu. Later on, Yuu asks her friend Koyomi to change the ending of the play that they're working on, since she realizes Touko sees the parallels between herself and the protagonist, and Yuu wants Touko to be able to be herself, rather than imitate someone else. Touko's best friend, Sayaka asks why Yuu did this, at which point Yuu explains herself, resulting in the following exchange. Possibly unbeknownst to Yuu, Sayaka actually agrees with her desire to change Touko. Early on, shortly before the student council candidates' speeches, Sayaka greets Touko and Yuu. When Touko turns down Sayaka's Love Confession, Sayaka asks if Touko loves Yuu. Touko says yes. |

No Game No Life: After the siblings defeat Kurami, she remains convinced that they, like her, used magic to cheat by colluding with another race. A month passes after the siblings take the throne, during which time they hole up in their room. Steph, angry with them for leaving governing the kingdom to her, takes them to task, but realizes that they were reading through the castle's books and planning their next move. Later on, the siblings recruit Kurami and her elf friend, Feel, for their plan to challenge the Warbeasts. Stephanie is honestly surprised that Feel, an elf noble whose family has served in the government for generations and keeps Kurami's family as slaves would risk a great deal to free the slaves and doesn't seem bothered by helping the enemy. Kurami approaches Sora, and points out that since all of his and Shiro's previous victories have been by the skin of their teeth, Kurami thinks they can only succeed against the Eastern Union if their plan goes flawlessly. Sora can't promise that, but points out that his teamwork with Shiro enables them to win all the time because they can cover for the other if they make a mistake. |

In Fire Emblem: Awakening, this is Sully's idea of a Love Confession to Virion: This also happens in the Female Avatar's support with Lucina if the two are not mother and daughter. In the B rank event, Robin gets tired of Lucina's refusal to believe that Robin and Chrom are merely friends. In Chapter 21, Chrom, Lucina and Robin reluctantly agree to meet with Validar, who has the one remaining gemstone for the Fire Emblem (or at least knows where it is). When Chrom asks about the gemstone, this exchange follows, which results in Validar springing the trap. In Robin and Tharja's C support, this exchange sets the tone for their relationship. |
